First, the best prices I've found:

Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $261
Brisbane to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $322
Adelaide to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $346
Gold Coast to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $255
Canberra to Ho Chi Minh City 16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $382
Perth to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $217
Hobart to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $306
Darwin to Ho Chi Minh City (16 May 2022 - 30 November 2022) from $204

Right - so this is the first time I've come across Bamboo Airways, but they're a 3-star airline on Skytrax and fly direct from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City on a Dreamliner, so sound pretty great!

(Note, their IATA code QH is shared with Kyrgyzstan Air which makes things a little confusing when looking them up, but they aren't the same company), eg Both BHAir (Bulgaria) and Heli France (France) have the IATA code 8H

Anyway, on to the good stuff. Most of these dates, Jetstar is really well priced and these are fantastic one way prices to Vietnam. However on some days, it's Bamboo that comes through - eg $224 from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City! So I've included all the dates and summarised the prices above, and hopefully it helps someone. Sometimes Scoot will come up too, but they're often connecting via Singapore.

Don't forget, hotels there are welcoming guests back with discounts too.

For those who are unfamiliar with Bamboo Airways:
    - they've been operating for about two years domestically in Vietnam
    - expansion to international travel with Australia recently; March 30 to Ho Chi Minh, and April 15 to Hanoi (direct flight) respectively
    - a large amount of Vietnamese locals and internationals have recommended Bamboo via Facebook groups for their great customer service, comparing to the very poor experience with Vietnam Airlines (service and cancelations without notice etc). Vietnam Airlines dont have much competition and became very arrogant, it's great seeing more competition in this space
    - 45kg luggage and meals comes as standard with international flights for now (please check whilst booking if this is still the case), please note I couldn't choose the meal types whilst booking
    - here's the kicker: I've been stating positive things above, but the owner recently was arrested for stock market manipulation. The airline handed over the management position to a long time employee to oversea operations.
    - I'm sure this does not spark confidence with the airline with some, but it's a publicly listed company owned by shareholders, they have the power. I'm not getting into any arguments about this situation, I'm just stating the facts for people to be aware

    Notes with traveling to Vietnam:
    - visa is required
    - quarantine in Vietnam not required as of 15 March
    - online medical declaration not required as of 27 April
    https://www.vietnamairlines.com/us/en/covid-19/chuan-bi-truo…
    - a PCR test is required 72 hours before your flight. Alternative is a RATS test medically supervised by a practitioner 24 hours before flight. This requirement may disappear very soon, please check up to date advisory
    - travel insurance covering covid is required, I recommend checking out Allianz travel insurance (came out to be ~$185 with me adventure pack for me.

    Personal notes:
    - I'm a Vietnamese Australian, and have traveled there 4-5 times for family and holiday
    - I'm flying with Bamboo direct to Hanoi in three weeks time
    - I recommend checking out Agoda for hotel deals, after you apply the regular 4-7% off coupons on their deals tab via the APP. I've compared the prices against Booking.com, Trivago, Expedia, Agoda was cheapest majority of the time (I believe I'm a good ozbargainer)
    - YouTube "top places to travel/eat" in Vietnam etc, or specific places like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Da Nang, Hoi Anh, Nha Trang Da Lat
    - I recommend YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/c/MaxMcFarlin
    - only use taxi services from the two biggest companies Vinasun and Mai Linh, do not ever enter any other taxi. Google image how they look. There's dodgy taxi people that may greet you and wave you to a dodgy taxi straight out of the airline gates, don't follow them, just ask the airport staff to direct you to the two taxi companies
    - "Grab" is an alternative taxi service via an APP, also offering food delivery like Uber/Ubereats (I think Uber bought them out). Google research for more info, as I can't confirm right now (typing this post via my mobile and scared it will delete my typing). I suggest staying downstairs and waiting for the driver when they're close to your hotel, as they may call you and speak Vietnamese where you are etc. If Vietnamese isn't your strong point ask your hotel concierge to book a taxi for you.
    - Vietnam is in summer right now, and very humid

      Great info

Pre-departure covid test requirements have been officially scrapped. You no longer need PCR or RAT tests done to enter Vietnam from 15 May 2022. https://plo.vn/tu-ngay-15-5-nguoi-nhap-canh-vao-viet-nam-kho…

My GP also recommended taking a Typhoid shot before traveling to East Asia, it's about $60-70 and lasts three years.

It's for dodgy food if people are wondering.

Also to bring Gastro Stop (no prescription), a round of antibiotics (prescription), mosquitoe repellent in roll on or spray form (not aerosol), and SPF +50 sunscreen

I also suggest polorised sunnies if traveling in summer

        • +1

Yes. You can also look at Gojek (GoViet) if you don't mind using motorbike taxis. Often cheaper than Grab and I find they offer coupons more frequently and generously. It's always good to interchange with all the competitors so you can often score coupons.

        • Wow that's alot of free souvenirs to bring home

No worries, Vietnam travel information was fresh in my mind cause I had to do tons of research the past couple of weeks for my coming trip.

    • +1

Can you share some tips for Hanoi if you have any? Some people say it's more scary than Saigon in terms of scams, ripping off tourists, etc… I'm going there in late Aug for 3 weeks.

      • +6

Scams are everywhere, not specific to an area. I've traveled from south, middle and north, they can be anywhere.

My family is from the south and my girlfriend is from the north by the way.

There's heaps of YouTube videos about that topic which I recommend checking out :)

Big one is the taxi services, which I stated in my original post.

Personally I would just avoid/ignore/decline anyone that comes up to you that speaks English and offers a service and/or product for free. Be very affirmative, decline constantly and walk away, they won't stop until you do.

Don't pay for tour sightseeing businesses if there isn't international feedback/reviews, they take you to overpriced restaurants, hotels, and markets (they get commissions)

There are obviously people that are just nice and want to chat, just be mindful of any ulterior motives.

Majority of people are very nice overall, and the culture is very welcoming (not sure if you've traveled before)

        • +6

Again good advice & good research.
Applies in a lot of countries.

Have met experienced travellers (they should have known better) - who lost a lot of money from common scams in other East Asian countries.
A financial officer for a NGO I met, was scammed twice that day by variant of 1 technique.

          If only they'd checked online!
Also, get to know about local social customs. It can save you!

Often perpetrated by "locals practicing their English", offering to help show them around.
Pity as I love getting to know the locals.

A variant is "friendly" women generally in their 20's with a hard luck story, wanting to be my "best friend" or needing help (supporting their child - I think they all carry the same photo!).
Happened 5min after exiting airport in one country.
Another chatted me up in the street in Beijing, & asked to use my hotel room to shower… Told reception who threw her out.
Many single guys fall for it! It can be an expensive mistake (from demand for "gift" to extortion, assault - & may involve corrupt Police).

I try to hide any sign of wealth (as a Westerner - you are likely much wealthier than locals), wear cheap headphones, crappy dark sunglasses, & speak a made up language if they persist. They quickly realise there are easier targets😊

Reports from travellers in Thailand this year - bought tickets from fake travel stores. They found out later their tickets were useless, but the store was no longer there…

          • +2

@INFIDEL: About only "scam" I fell for in well over a decade of overseas travel - bought a used long distance bus ticket in a mountain village.
When I found out, I embarrassed the crap out of guest house owner who sold me it. Got a refund!

Helpful knowing some local customs, a few local phrases, & local currency system to avoid being scammed!!

Guess that's why I enjoy travel more in safer Japan🎏

        • +2

It’s embarrassing but I’m actually viet, just never been back much, and would be first time to the north. I’ve been told they try to rip off the viet kieu even more than foreigners

      • +2

Keep away from the cyclo guys (like a bike where the driver sits at the front and two seats behind for the passengers), they usually are pretty iffy, if you know your exchange rates it helps, use grab for travelling (think asian uber) about.

Dont go out and get raging drunk some places will charge you for drinks you never had, so usually if you are having some beers you keep the empty bottles under the table so when done you can reconcile your beers against the bill.

Negotiate at the markets, say mac qua (too costly) and start to walk away usually they will call you back and show you a price on a calculator, negotiate like this.

For the love of god careful with drinks that have ice in them, or you might be in the dunny for a good few days!! Take some gastrostop tablets with you just in case.

Dont be too flash with gold chains and carrying too much cash around, Vietnam is pretty safe though pickpocketing does happen.

Those are some tips I hope are helpful.

        Mark

        • +2

Fun fact. When cyclo could ride into the city centre the old men pedalling told me that any old cyclo riders would have been with the South Vietnamese army. After years of re-education camp, the government would harass any place they worked so basically all they could do is become a cyclo driver to eke out a living. That position is one of the lowest in society.

        • +1

Cyclo is where the passengers sit at the front and the rider at the back I think. I don’t mind it when the rider is older but then I feel bad thinking I’m too heavy, plus people look at you on the streets so kinda embarrassing.

          • @macr0hard: My apologies you are right, the driver is at the rear in the cyclo.

    • +3

I have to add that the fake taxis are EXTREMELY convincing. They are painted the same as legitimate taxis and have painted signs on them almost the same. Apparently only a letter different. I have travelled extensively however was caught by one outside the markets in Saigon. They use the meter trick where they use a meter but then press a button that multiplies the fare by 10. My driver also stopped a hundred meters from my hotel i guess so he wouldn’t be caught. I had a shouting match with the driver and only paid the correct fare but unless you are aware they exist they are so like legitimate taxis you really wouldn’t know until it’s too late.

I will also say that I actually saw a women have something grabbed off her by someone on a motorbike. She was with her husband and a guide watching a performance in the centre of town. I couldn’t see what was grabbed by she was extremely upset as was her husband who started shouting at their poor guide.

      • +1

I got done by fake taxi before… didn't even notice it until the final fare which went up by like 5 bucks just before stopping lol… just take it as a learning experience

      • +2

Always wanted to jump in a fake taxi, just not this kinda fake taxi

Lol, 99.9% of viet people living in the country call it Saigon, hcm city is only used on papers

        • good.

      • Sài Gòn. Please.

If you’re going to educate people, do it right.

        • yeah screw the commy

Best to check flight times, as you may spend over a day in airports.

Cheapest from Gold Coast is 26+hr.
    ($255 with LCC Scoot: OOL-SIN-KUL-SGN)
But Jetstar flights on that route can take 35hr & Scoot 38hr!!

Bamboo take only 8:45 direct from Sydney👍

Bamboo Airways is not the same as budget airlines. They are full service airlines like VN Airlines or Qantas with luggage and meal included.

Their ex-CEO has been arrested for stock market manipulation and insider trading and this is not the first time he's done it. He used to get away with a small fine previously which is nothing compared to the profit he earned.

    • They advertised themselves as hybrid airlines

  • Is an 18 hours stop over at manila a bad idea with covid restrictions? Interested to see abit of Philippines

    • +3

To be honest i'd avoid going out of your way to see Manila - it's my (and many others) lowlight of Asian travel. Philippine islands etc are nice but the cities are very average travel destinations.

    • +2

Would be better to go for a couple of days and go to some nice seaside town a few hours away from
Manila. Manila is an ugly, concrete metropolis that's pretty much six smaller cities that have sprawled into each other, not really a destination you'd want to seek out. It's massive and you need some form of transport to get anywhere. If like grungy, bustling cities then you might like it though, there's an active nightlife, jeepneys are a cool way to get around, and there's some fun street food.

If you did want to do the 18 hours I guess you could, just allow heaps of time to get a taxi to the airport (make sure you go to the right airport! There are multiple) because the traffic jams are horrendous.

      • +1

Thanks for detailed reply guys, but decided to go with direct flight, Philippine airlines had some terrible reviews recently and can't afford any hiccups along the way, also costs more

  • are these prices return or 1 way? Also, I've never used beatthatflight before. Are you guys the middle guy that gets commission when we click from your site? Just tried and it then goes to smartfares.com in the US hmm

    • +1

yes, an aggregation engine, if you click through and do buy, we get a tiny commission (mentioned at bottom of page).

  • +2

Still waiting for Bamboo to reply regarding my request for cancelling flight. All within their terms and conditions too. Only been 2 months 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • Good luck with that. I was burnt by these shonks during the start of COVID. They cancelled heaps of flights and rescheduled people onto a handful they kept operating. Despite their terms allowing for a refund, they refused to provide one.

Jetstar on the other hand actually gave me a full refund after a bit of pestering even though their terms didn't explicitly allow it.

  • Can't find any dates for bamboo - anyone else had luck?

    • Go to their main website to book, and if you pick the date that too far away they are just not there yet.

    • The $224 ones from Sydney, for example - are where Bamboo are cheaper than Jetstar on those dates.

  • +5

Just did Bamboo Airways MEL-HAN last week, quite decent, totally better than Jetstar for sure.
    + 2 main, 2 snacks included.
    + IFE, 45kgs, 7kgs carry on.
+ 787-9, legroom is alright, could request window seat at check-in counter.
    * One domestic return included for free (not sure about this one, i paid the same price for MEL-HAN-DAD)
    - No inflight WiFi.
    - Website is such a PITA to use.
    - Morning departure.

    • +1

      Very helpful👍

    • +1

When you mention free, do you mean that MEL - HAN & MEL - HAN - DAD are both the same price?

      • +1

You could search on their website, MEL-DAD will be the same price as MEL-HAN (or SYD-SGN) or try multiple destination search.
Could do the same with Vietnam Airlines as well.

    • Thanks for the information.

Do they have movies to watch on the plane?

      • +2

Yeah they do, there are new movies and show on it but anyway i did bring my own entertainment so not really pay attention to it.
IFE (based on Android i think) are quite responsive, better than VNA.

        • Are we able to choose seats on there site closer to departure?

          • @HangryCakeStore: They don't even have online check-in lol, you could pay extra to choose the seat, or ask at the counter (for free ofc, but hey depends on your luck)

  • Is gotogate reliable?

    • +1

I've used them in the past without issue, same with mytrip and trip.com. They're as reliable as each other - the issue is - if everything goes well you don't remember them - you remember your airline.
If things go bad - you need to change or whatever and have a long email / on hold call / whatever, it's with them and that's annoying. So then you remember them badly. As a lot of reviews online have.

I'm sure some have had legitimate reasons to complain - but I've personally (not speaking as a BTF rep here) have had no issues.

  • -1

check the dates, dont fly during monsoon season….theres a reason why tickets might be dirt cheap trying to get tourist back into the country….

  • Whats good to do there?

  • +3

Fantastic place to visit, and some very insightful & thoughtful comments from Ausdave.
We went 2018/2019 for 2 weeks and never felt unsafe, despite some late evening wanderings away from tourist areas whilst lost!

My recommendation would be Hoi An & surrounds & Hanoi + Ha Long bay.

HCMC is OK, but I think a few days is more than enough.
You should visit the war museums for an education on what it was like during that time, it is deeply moving.

  • Good prices for Saigon.

  • Good prices and don't be put off by the "3 star" Skytrax rating. Skytrax ratings are basically worthless as they are paid for by airlines. Yes, they claim on their website that airlines do not pay them for ratings but the way they get around this is by having airlines "sponsor" their awards ceremonies and including their name/logo in advertising.

Air Kyrgyzstan had its (air operator’s certificate revoked)[http://www.rusaviainsider.com/insight-kyrgyzstan-avia-traffic-company-bucks-trend/] a few years ago which is why the QH code was reused for Bamboo when they launched. You can search for airline codes on (the official IATA website)[https://www.iata.org/en/about/members/airline-list/] or use the (full list)[https://www.iata.org/globalassets/iata/services/financial-services/sis/member-list/sis-member-list.xlsx] if you prefer Excel.

  • Planning a trip to VN right now, this post at a glance will save me approx $1500 compared to next best calculations i was finding.
