Ahhhh the ol' "4K" and "8K" cables.

    • Why are you implying that they don't exist or they're fake?

      • +3

Any - any - cable that is built to a sufficiently high standard to pass the 48Gbps bandwidth that the latest HDMI standard specifies, can pass 4k@120 or 8k@60, plus all the additional features listed in the spec (dynamic hdr, vvr etc etc). The electrical connections in every single HDMI cable ever made are exactly the same, it's all down to the hardware at either end that the cable plugs in to. i've got HDMI cables bought over 10 years ago that work perfectly fine with my 4K TV - because they are electrically identical to cables made today, and their build quality means that they are able to cope with the additional bandwidth requirements of today's data streams without errors.

So, yes, if you want to put it like that, there is no such thing as a "4K" cable. It's not as if you bought one of those and found it didn't work when you plugged it into your 8K TV (unless it was so crappy that it was never going to work with anything).

There are cables that are certified to work at the required bandwidth for the 2.1a standard, and there are cables that haven't been certified but are still good enough to work.

But there are no "4K" or "8K" cables.

  • After a Display Port cable, any recommendations for around 5 metres that will do 1440p high refresh rate?

  • +1

It's getting more important to specify resolution + refresh rate now more than ever.

I tend to use https://cablechick.com.au but TBH I haven't bought cables in years.

    • Yeah they are a good local business who provide lots of info and support for their products.

A lot of eBay wares has dubious claims and it’s hard to know what is true.

  • Does anyone know if these are HDMI certified (with a unique QR code sticker)?

PMAY10 works but the lowest it gets down to is $14.39 for the 8k 3m cable

PMAY12 doesn't work as I'm not an ebay plus member
