Hisense 75” U80G $2995 - Anything Better at $3k Mark? Sony X90J? TCL C825?

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Hi OzBargainers

Firstly thanks for all the help from reading posts, always a great source of info and research.

I’m shopping for a 75” TV. It’s in a bright room and I’m a little keen on mini-LED for obvious reasons but am already stretched at $3k. I watch a fair bit of sports so want 200hz, will be sitting well back and straight on so 4K fine, but brightness and reflection handling necessary. Besides sport it is mostly used for streaming and free to air.

I’ve got an older 55” LG OLED (OLED55B8STD) and love the contrast and blacks but need bigger and don’t have the $$$ for OLED IN 77”.

I’m not that fussed with 8k but it doesn’t hurt. Researching other Hisense TVs I saw the U80G and I am tempted. Doesn’t seem to be as watered down for Australian market as lower range Hisense models (eg has HDMI 2.1) and I like that it’s android/Google OS compared to others in the Hisense range.

Seems to review well and although it’s been this price before it still seems competitive. I would like it to be future proof so appreciate the Dolby Vision (Netflix uses it).

US specs give HDR10+, but AU spec only specifies HDR10, is this correct?
Could HDR10+ come via update or no?

Given vast changes in room brightness is Dolby Vision IQ going to be a big benefit if I hold out for a 2022 TV? (I guess there will always be something newer)

Is 8 bit colour depth (not 10) an issue?

I’ve also considered TCL C825 ($2995 also at TGG) for the mini-LED (better local dimming) but have been told it’s not a true 200hz by TGG rep? Told great brightness and contrast.

Also advised to consider the Sony X90J (also $3k), told it maybe less tech but excellent all the same, great motion clarity and better contrast and brightness. HDR 10 not 10+ but has Dolby vision and 10 bit colour.

Any other worthy candidates?
Am I missing something, or are they much a muchness?

Thanks in advance!

Rting is one of the biggest and indepth TV comparison website.
this is a link to the best TV in ranking over 75"
    https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/table/82068
use the filters, eg if you don't want OLEDS to be listed, etc.

if your set on that Hisense TV then i found better pricing for you:
    $2750 https://www.appliancecentral.com.au/75u80g-hisense-75-inch-u…
    $2649 https://www.buysmarte.com.au/hisense-75u80g-75-189cm-u80g-ul…

Jb hifi will probably price match Appliance central, not sure with Buysmarte as its not as well known

As OP has worked out the US Hisense TV's are vastly different to the Aus ones despite giving them the exact same same.

Proceed with caution when comparing models.

  • Thanks Vince!
Looks like buysmarte have a better price for the TCL too!

TGG rep is correct about not being true 200Hz but that’s true of all TVs in the market.

For sport, particularly if you’re watching free to air, motion processing will be one of the most important factors in picture quality.

Typically Sony do this much better than TCL or Hisense. But whether or not there’s enough of a difference for you to justify the price difference is subjective of course.

Also advised to consider the Sony X90J (also $3k).

    75" is $2461.00 + Delivery @ https://www.thegoodguyscommercial.com.au/

So I can only speak for the U80G, since that's the only one I have. We managed to get it for $2,495, and thanks to a family member who has a transport company, got free delivery. We were actually looking at a 4k 65" Sony for about $2k, and then when we saw the U80G on special for only $500 we figured we may as well get it (doubly so considering our previous TV was a 40" plasma that was about 12 years old!)

What I'm going to say is my personal opinion - I'm not a TV tech guy, and I don't have much experience with fancy TVs in general, so while I might say something looks good to me, it could be on the less than average side of things for most other TVs. Just getting that out the way because I don't have any comparisons on this TV vs other TVs.

We've been very, very happy with it so far. The 8k is great, though of course there's not much content; watching 8k youtube videos is about the only native 8k content we can watch, but it's still fun to do that every so often. It does have an upscaler which seems to work pretty well. There's been some 1080p content that we've watched that has looked REALLY good, so that's nice. The brightness is also good, and we've connected it up to our gaming consoles, though we haven't played anything in 4k 120 yet. 4k 60fps gaming though is great too.

I don't know much about how Dolby Vision looks vs the same content on the same screen without DV, but when the TV realises it's meant to be a DV movie/show, it automatically changes settings. It looks really good, but there's no way I've seen to turn it off, so can't compare how it looks otherwise.

I haven't used Hisense's normal Australia OS they put on their TVs, so can't say how that compares, but Google OS runs great on it. It's fast, responsive, and works well.

We have our TV connected up to a sound bar - that was easy enough to do just by changing some settings.

I'm not too sure about 8 bit vs 10 bit, or HDR10+, so won't comment on that.

Also, you may know this, but the only experience we had with non-plasma TVs was some cheap Kogan 40" TVs that were on sale years ago and were light enough to carry with one person. That said, this thing is HEAVY. The TV itself is about 40kg, so if you plan to wall mount it, you may need to get a special mount to handle the weight and size?

Hope this helped - if you have any questions, let me know and I can try answer them :)
