Best Tips on Saving for Booking Travel?

Hey all,

Just wondering what tips people have when it comes into regards for booking travel.

I mean weather people source discounted Jetstar credit, or by frequent flyer points to book travel. Do Airlines, or websites hold sales and you wait?

I'm also wondering what websites people use to book for hotels, which potentially have cashback?

Furthermore, which credit cards have free travel insurance included?

I normally use my Citibank debit credit card for taking out money out the ATM, is this still the best way?

I noticed Cheddar app at the moment has 20% cashback for some booking sites. I never really thought about this before!

I'm basically looking to head to Bali in August, and just figured I would look for some extra tips which in the past I've never used.

I'm sure everyone would love everyone's tips!

Thanks đź‘Ť

    Bali? Sorry to hear

  • Check prices before and after clicking through cash back sites, usually the price is higher for the latter.

  • Get a commbank ultimate card to purchase your trip on

it has travel insurance, and if you spend over 2k each statement period there's no annual fee

also you get bonus points with it.

The best advice I can give is to plan your trip well in advance, destination, time of year, duration etc hopefully with a degree of flexibility, then keep an eagle eye out for deals. When that great deal pops up, you’re ready to go. It’s a waiting and watching game.

    my go to for travels:

    • ozbargain flights sales are always quite good. amazing to score dirt cheap flight tickets. Also Book with ANZ credit cards for free covid travel insurance cover. Offpeak times are also amazing as everthing else is cheaper from acoms to atttractions.

    • booking.com they have a loyalty program for life (up to 20% off with bookings when you have a certain amount of hotel bookings with them) you can stack with cashbacks like shopback and cash rewards. though check between the both as they do jack up the price if you do use cashback programs.

    • Airbnb, for cheap accoms.

    • incognito when you book, there some algorhtims that jack up prices when seraching at certain times and frequency of searches.

  • I mean weather people source

Ximena Cordoba - Fox News is definitely worth a look

Nice Bali hotels used to be cheap once till they cottoned on that Aussies would pay similar prices as they pay here so up they went. Same as the big brand surf shops used to be half price v here, now same as you pay here.
Place has gone to shite, just getting around with the amount of local traffic is a nightmare. The days you only ate Indonesian food, no western food, lattes, etc, no English tv, or newspapers, phones, wifi, was like a different planet
May as well go the Gold Coast now no difference lol.

    • I actually think Bali is more expensive because of Europeans, not Australians.

I met a lot of Europeans in Bali, and a lot of Europeans consider Bali a luxury exotic holiday like going to Mexico.

They also have a stronger currency, so they're willing to pay more than us.

      • Yeah same thing westerner’s

  • For best hotel prices go via google maps hotel comparison. Don't use cashback sites - you end up paying more on booking / agoda. Via google maps you'll get much lower rates vs Cashback sites. Also make sure to click all the way into agoda - the final price is actually cheaper than the comparison site.

  • I keep on changing my credit cards. I switch between Amex Explorer and Citi Rewards. Initially when I signed up to Amex, they had 150k points when you spend $3k in 3 months. Then I referred my Mrs and got her signed up to Qantas Amex card. I got $50k for referral and she got 150k points for signing up. This was pre covid, so 3 years ago.

As soon as she got the points, I booked a flight (almost $1000 in value at that time). Last year, Amex had a sale again on black friday, I asked Mrs to sign up to Explorer card, received 180k points, booked the flight and cancelled the cc. I have just signed upto Citi rewards CC, they have $100k points when you spend $3k in 3 months which is close to $420.

This is all just free money.
