Outdoor TV - How to Find One?

Hello OZB,

I'm trying to find an outdoor TV for my parents, we had a sony one that lasted 10 years, it worked but it was completely unusable during the day because it had no brightness and was limited to 720p so even chromecasting wouldn't work.

We bought a cheap EKO 42" TV for $299, it failed within 7 months due to rust, nowhere near as reliable as the Sony but neither TV is made for outdoor use.

The only genuine made for outdoor TV I can see in Aus is "Samsung The Terrace" but it starts at $4000!

Is there anything out there that's outdoor designed but semi-resonable priced, anywhere up to $1500? Anything 40-55" is fine size wise.

Otherwise, what's the easiest way to just find a bright TV and I'll just find an outdoor TV cover for when it's not being used. It's completely under cover/shade so it'll never get wet or direct sunlight. None of the TV seem to list brightness besides the top end TV's advertising their peak brightness.

  • In outdoor enclosure might be your best bet.

Lol at $4K, you can buy 13 EKOs and use 2 a year for the next 6.5 years (and probably still have money left over). Personally I'd go the enclosure route as well, or enclose the area a bit more if possible which might make it a more relaxed space and help the brightness and longevity issue.

    • Yep, the price difference for an "outdoor" tv is insanity, I understand not everyone has a TV on their patio but the market is basically non existent. I'm just surprised there's no rugged/outdoor TVs under 1-2k.

I went with a $350 TV from TGG and I've purchased a $35 amazon velcro enclosure which should hopefully allow it to last long enough. If we get 2 years per TV, that'll do.

  • I've had a Sony 26in Bravia running outside now for nearly 5 years. Still running okay, though there are some signs of corrosion. It is under cover, so isn't exposed to rain (unless it's extremely Windy).

    • Old TV was a 32" Sony Bravia, it sat under the patio for at least 10 years, every single HDMI and USB plug at the back completely rusted but never skipped a beat haha.

      • Admittedly, when I saw the title I was going to suggest 'looking over your neighbors fence.'

I do have a Chromecast and a Firestick plugged in to the Bravia. I tried to set it up with a Network Access Point from Ebay, that was 'compatible', but it was not successful.
