A reminder to Lego OZb'ers that the current Gift With Purchase is the 90 years of play Forest Hideout 40567 (i.e. recreation from the 1988 Castle System set 6054). This GWP is only valid until 22nd June.

The set is currently going for around $70-80 on eBay. The biggest caveat is that the qualifying purchase is $209, and as you may know sets on lego.com tends to be a bit more expensive than Kmart/Amazon etc. Which leaves the best bet being the Exclusives, but pickings there are slim as most of the desirable sets are OOS.

  • Boo! Mentioning ebay resell value.. what's this, OzScalpers now?

No. Its to put a dollar value on the gift to quantify the deal, and assess whether spending $209 at lego.com's higher than avg prices is worthwhile to you or not - because the alternative, if you want the Forest Hideout, is to go to ebay and buy it for $70~80

So spending $209 in lego.com you are looking at paying around $30~40 premium over what you would pay for the same sets outside at amazon/kmart; or, you have to pay the $70~80 to get the GWP on its own. Which option is better differs by individual, on the sets available, etc.

I'm all for nostalgia of Forestmen, but $70 for 2 minifig and a little hut isn't worth it for me.

Most sets can be found for 25-35% off if you're patient, and I say this as an owner of most large sets. Notwithstanding VIP points, you're paying more than a $30-$40 premium by buying at lego.com - you're paying a $50 - $70 premium.

If you would happily buy the GWP for $50-$70 outright, go for it, as long as you are also buying LEGO that you intended to buy anyway.

        • That's true - but waiting for discount has its own risks of missing the 'last call' window for sets nearing retirement, but if early enough in the lifecycle this shouldn't be a big issue.

I think there are three scenarios:

          i) There is a Lego Exclusive set that you want, or have plenty of VIP points to use - then the GWP is really free.
ii) There is a generally available set that you like - in which case, paying $50-70 (revised from your comment) premium still beats the $80-90 (also revised ebay price) of the GWP
iii) there isn't any set that you want (in stock), in which case buying legos for the gift is false economy and you are better off buying the GWP from eb

I managed to hit scenario i) with the Delorian, and, this news was just announced: https://gizmodo.com/lego-lion-knights-castle-galaxy-explorer… so I pre-ordered 2 Galaxy Explorers. I hope that with the deferred shipping date they won't swindle me on the GWP.

Sweet, thanks for the reminder! Was waiting for a free gift I wanted before buying the Ferrari Daytona SP3

    • nice! if you have a set exclusive to Lego.com that you already have in mind, it makes the decision much much easier. I managed to grab the Delorian briefly b4 it went OOS again to get the GWP, so quite happy with that. I wish to get the Van Gogh but that's OOS now.

      • Yes! Both of those are on my to-buy list too. I tend to almost always buy directly from Lego regardless for the Cashrewards cashback, VIP points, and then get my credit card (28 Degrees) to refund me the difference on a cheaper price whenever it shows up here on OzB :D

I'm not sure if I trust the "Exclusive" tags on sets though, a couple I've seen sold elsewhere that it's made me reluctant to use my VIP points for vouchers on them…
