Honest question, why would I go with these when I can go with similar aliexpress ones that support apple and google home voice control?

    • +2

Are you sure they support Apple HomeKit? Usually the cheap ones don't.

      • +1

fair question, I am an all android user, and assumed the aliexpress also do offer apple support too.

      • +1

Yes possible, these ones are going at almost half the price with promo code: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/707402

I can't speak for these in particular, but not all LED light strips are made equal. I've stuck some to the underside of the kitchen cupboards but the "white" light isn't all that great compared to other strips I've used.

    • Are the ones you're referring to addressable? These ones are addressable I think in groups of 6 leds, can't remember.

      • Yup, The LIFX have 'zones'.
The only addressable strips I've seen that are "cheap" are only IR control, no wifi and certainly no homekit.

I have this and a couple of extensions and these are far brighter and colour is far more accurate than the Yeelight strips I've had for years and LEDs are individually addressable which most on the market are not. I can't speak to the thousands of AliExpress light strips but these are genuinely a step above the rest.

The only reason I wouldn't buy these again is because I have far more connection issues with lifx products than basically any other smart light I have.

Basically my analysis - the lights themselves are great, connecting them and keeping them connected can be problematic.

        • I have two Lenovo lightstrips and two Lenovo smart bulbs. They don't work with Apple HomeKit (they do work with Alexa/Google) but their connections have been pretty great for me and they're very pretty and cheap.

      • Had a couple of these and other LIFX lights for years now. I’m using it in a HomeKit environment. When they work it’s awesome, but every now and then they randomly stop responding. It’s super frustrating and they requires a manual reset. I’ve updated everything to the latest firmware and the app says they have good wifi signals. Not trying to turn anyone off, just sharing my experience.

If I have to diagnose it MIGHT be interferences since I live in a town house so keep that in mind. Recently added some IKEA smart devices which has its own hub and they seem to have much more solid connection. Haven’t been able to find a decent HomeKit compatible light strip other than this though, hoping when Matter comes out we’ll have more options. TL:DR, as per above, great lights but connection is patchy.

I have a few LIFX bulbs around the house, one Xiaomi light strip and one light strip from Bunnings. The LIFX ones work perfect almost all the time, the Xiaomi one will randomly decide it doesn't want to play with Google and I have to manually reboot it, the Bunnings one worked for a few days then just kept refusing to work and I threw it out. So now I'd rather just buy LIFX and save myself headaches.

    • Lifx are far brighter and have way more vibrant colours than even the other branded ones - cheapie no name imports aren't even close.

I replaced 2 x 5M (Doubled up for extra brightness) Arlec light strips with 1 x 4M Lifx strip in my kitchen and the single Lifx strip was brighter than both.

I have multiple of these and they are so good. Got them at about $60 a long time back (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/572591).

Love how each part of it can be different colours, you can achieve a really nice effect.

I use them behind the couch and TV and basically use these more than the main lights at night!

  • I have few Lifx lights at my place, its always reliable and I think with the strip light it has so close led lights you cant see any the darkness between 2 led's when it glows.

  • Just bought this a few days back when it dropped to $95. Urgh. Timing :(

  • Kmart: used it, ripped it off. Doesn't have white and only RGB.
Lifx: always reliable and works all the time and brighter
Kogan: not the most reliable and 2/4 came with sections not working but replaces by kogan..quite fragile and can't bend. Has white and RGBW and so far works well if on a budget

  • Love LIFX , but the value proposition is not worth it for me To many failures for $60 novelty lights

  • What an awesome deal, missed out! :(

This is still $79 at Officeworks

Even better if you'd like to make an effort, you can 10% price beat at Bunnings for $71.10

Bunnings have them for $78.90 now… not sure if it's a deal or normal price
