  • Pretty good value on the bundle: $5.625 per set booster pack in the bundle vs $5.83 per set booster pack in the 18 pack box.

Actual value of the set however…

  • +1

Oh I'll spend some money here tonight but not on commander legends! Rip off set. Prof got less than 8 bucks of value from a set box.

    • At this point in time yes, but put it in the closet for 5 years and just like every other set it will go up in value.

  • I kinda want to get back into MTG, I haven't played in like 25 years.

I'm down with shelling out for a box of "something", but whats "good", the landscape has changed so much since when I was playing, I wouldn't even know where to start…

    • +1

Honestly mate f2p arena is the way to go imo
WTC be greedy as these days.

      • But all you are left with is a digital asset worth zero, you can't even trade the cards :(

        • +1

Would be a problem… if I put real money into it. All I put in is my time… and sanity I guess.

        • I play arena mainly for the drafts. Treat it as a coin-op arcade machine - combined with collecting coins thru quests for the free2play, you win some gems back etc and you don't really spend too much real money on drafting.

    • I would get a box of commander legends 1 set booster box, they are still cheap and you could get a jeweled lotus in it worth $250-$1000

      • thanks.

and that's different from legends: battle for baulders gate?

what about this modern horizons booster box, just overkill?

        • +2

Commander legends was the original set 'made for commander' It had some great cards in it, including the jeweled lotus mentioned above, although I think the average is 1 in 8 boxes will have one. I myself opened 3 boxes of the set and didn't get a great deal from it, mainly junk legendary creatures.

Battle for Baldurs gate is the new 'made for commander' set (sometimes dubbed commander legends 2) but themed with Baldurs gate. It is widely known as a bad deal haha. Wizards changed the marketing and pricing starting with this set. They shrunk the 'set' booster boxes down to 18 packs as well so be careful you don't get caught out there thinking you are getting 30 or 36 packs like before.

Magic has changed a lot in the last 25 years, and depending on what type of MTG you want to get into there is a lot to choose from.

For example, if you wanted to get back into standard this is not the set for you, buy New capena, kamigawa, crimson vow or midnight hunt instead.
If however you want to get into commander, then this commander set IS STILL NOT FOR YOU haha. Just buy a commander precon, all the recent ones have been decent decks.

          • @XeKayeM: thanks!

so, commander it seems is a bit of a different format, for now i think ill stick with what i know, standard i guess its known as.

so those other sets you mentioned, New Capena, Kamigawa or Crimson Vow, are they just themed standard sets?

            • @tephra: yep themed in the planes they are in, standard also includes AFR, strixhaven, kaldheim and zendikar rising but if you want the value you are better off buying one of the newer sets.

Even better though, visit mtggoldfish, find a standard deck you like the look of and just buy the singles for it.

              • @XeKayeM: i dont mind buying some boxes… half the fun is openning new packs and seeing what you got :)

what about core 2020 - is that a good middle ground ?

                • @tephra: not in standard anymore, still in pioneer though. Check mtggoldfish for all the info

                  • @XeKayeM: gotcha.

man, browsing through these vintage sets brings back memories….

      • +1

        could

        :’)

      • Can't get a foil full art jeweled lotus from the regular set booster AFAIK. But yes, definitely way more value.

    • For paper MTG, especially coming back from a long hiatus, the best option is to find a playgroup to buddy up with and either play Cube or Commander.

Some Good Games stores don't charge to use their tables, some ask you spend $5-10 in store credit, and you are playing casual magic all night long.

Your Commander deck never rotates, only need 1 copy of each card, and you can pimp it up with old school/foils/alt arts/alters. Really the best bang-for-buck IMO. A starting point would be a Commander precon + some upgrades.

Once you are familiar with the scene you can decide if you want to play the competitive formats.

      • yes, i should get into a local club or something; but im a bit of an introvert and to start with i just wanna get my missus into it.

commander looks like its geared towards multiplayer, does it still work for heads-up (ie 1v1)?

and these legends boosters boxes dont have basic lands? so i would need to buy some lands (land station??) ontop?

i dunno, standard appeals more than commander, maybe because its what i know; but is that stupid?

        • Commander is usually multiplayer yes, and a 1v1 commander deck would be built quite differently to a regular (multi) commander deck. The best format I like best for casual 1v1 is Cube. in Cube, someone owns a cube (of 360 or some other number) of cards they built to be fairly balanced, and you draft from 'packs' created randomly from the cube, and then you play 1v1 using the drafted cards for the evening.

Lands you will eventually accumulate more than you could ever use regardless of how you obtain them :)

I played standard when I 'got back in to MTG' as well. The thing with standard tho (and probably you'd have known it is 'Type 2' :) , is that the decks in events are going to converge to a couple of highly optimized decks, and there is very little social interaction besides a brief chat as the play tends to be a bit more competitive. Decks also rotate out fairly fast so from a financial standpoint it loses out.

    • Probably go for the main sets that aren't commander, crimson vow and midnight hunt were some of my favourites with a cool horror vibe, and there both on sale, go for set boosters unless your playing the draft format
