710

Now might be a good time to snag a deal for the highly rated game 'Into the Breach' (from the developers of the well-reviewed 'FTL: Advanced Edition') - with the (Twitter, Steam news) announcement that the upcoming Advanced Edition content update will be made FREE to download for all Into the Breach game owners, on all existing platforms (Windows, Linux, macOS, Switch) this July 19th 2022 (USA timezone).

Advanced Edition update (YouTube video)
  • new mechs (5 new mech squads)
  • new weapons (nearly 40 new weapons)
  • new pilots and pilot abilities (4 new pilots, and triple the amount of skills any pilot can earn through promotions)
  • new challenges and achievements
  • new "Unfair" difficulty mode
  • new mission objectives
  • new bosses and monsters
  • 7 new languages supported (Arabic, Thai, Swedish, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Turkish, and Spanish (Latin American))
  • new music from Ben Prunty
  • and more new stuff! (details forthcoming).

Into the Breach (for Android and iOS mobile devices)

Starting from July 19th 2022, Into the Breach will also be released for the first time on Android and iOS mobile devices. Interestingly, the developers have partnered with Netflix, so this means that Into the Breach (Android/iOS only) will ONLY be playable for Netflix subscribers, as a free-to-play game title on their mobile devices.

"Once released, you download the game from the App Store / Good Play Store. Then you'll need to login with your Netflix account and it will play like any other app." (Subset Games' Twitter post/reply)
"It will only be playable via Netflix for the foreseeable future." (Subset Games' Twitter post/reply)

  • Exact same game as played on Windows / Linux / macOS / Switch platforms
  • Newly redesigned touch-screen interface for smaller touchscreens
  • No ads or in app purchases
  • Already includes Advanced Edition content

Into the Breach (physical Nintendo Switch release)

Into the Breach will also be getting a physical Nintendo Switch release later in October 2022 (pre-orders and more info here).

    Thats great!

Excellent game. So glad to hear there's more content on the way!

This was free on epic store a while back, I played through it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would highly recommend checking it out if you're a fan of turn based tactical games for some "4D chess" style fun.

  • is this a bit like the early xcom games?
tech tree's/building up veterans and such?

    • +1

Your pilots level up and gain some higher stats or new abilities. There's not really a tech tree, you gain resources during runs you can use to purchase extra weapons or pilots. Completing achievements earns you points which are used to unlock different mech teams (each team has it's own unique set of achievements too to encourage trying new things). It's rogue-lite in some ways, so once you fail a run you choose keep one of your pilots to use again on your next run.

    • Along with the announcement trailer and launch trailer and other gameplay/walkthrough videos on YouTube, the Into the Breach Wikipedia article does a good job of describing the gameplay and the development/game design choices/inspiration(s)

Best summary I've seen is 'chess with mechs and Kaiju'

      • Agreed with the notion of chess (positional play, observing enemy kaiju moves/actions and thereby looking ahead to carefully decide your sequence of moves/actions for each of your mechs/pilots)

Eurogamer editor Christian Donlan also mentioned the word "chess" in his Recommended review of Into the Breach:

"Alongside being billiards and Whack-a-Mole and chess and American Football and all the rest of it, Into the Breach is also FTL, in its delight in the glinting clockwork of failure, in its fascination with difficult choices, in surprising victories, in drastic variation that works its strange magic within tight restrictions,"

While it has RNG elements, like XCOM games… the RNG is more to do with the starting position each round, from which the outcome is 100% predictable. Whereas XCOM games the RNG is played out during the round. This makes ITB more of a puzzle game, except substandard strategy can lead to impossible to beat puzzles. Although due to the procedural nature of it all, even the best plays can lead to an early demise.

I have beaten this game a dozen times and unlocked almost all achievements. And yet I have yet to complete it. This truly is a masterpiece worth every penny and then some. I bought into the game because FTL was also a masterpiece. But little did I realise this was one of the best games of the 21st century. For them to release new content, and for free, is mind blowing. 11/10

      • Well written review, and the sentiment about how fantastic it is for the developers to do the same thing for Into the Breach as what they did for FTL (by releasing its Advanced Edition content, also for free) is similarly shared by several gaming articles' commenters (Eurogamer, RPS, PC Gamer)

  • Good game. Would pay 10 but not 20. It was on gamepass for a while so I paid whatever that represents in the subscription.

Yep, I already included those details in the post …

… and bear in mind that this "free-for-Netflix-subscribers" bit, is ONLY specifically for the upcoming July 19th release of the Android/iOS version of Into the Breach - NOT for the PC version

  • How do the Netflix subscription games work? Do you only have to be subscribed at the time you claim it then it's yours forever? Or do you lose access to them if your Netflix subscription lapses?

      Netflix Games (help hub)

Related article: What happens to your games if you cancel Netflix?

Just like your viewing history, your gameplay history and game saves will be stored for 10 months if you cancel your account. If you restart your account within that time, you’ll be able to continue a game where you left off as long as you haven't uninstalled it or deleted the game's data.

Gameplay history, just like viewing history, won't be stored if a profile is deleted. See How do Netflix profiles work for games? for more information.

Note: You must have an active Netflix subscription to play Netflix Games.

      • They will delete your save games after 10 months of lapsed subscription? ROFL.

  • I’m on GOG, only one I can see is cheaper???

    $15.23 (50% off)
    $7.61

    Save for others?

    • I think you might have your browser session with GOG.com set to USD currency, rather than AUD currency

At the bottom of the GOG.com page, once you set the currency to AUD, it should come up as A$10.79 (50% off, was A$21.50)

      • Correct.

        Oh noes! I paid $11.08 …
but ING will prob give some back ;)

The game always felt like it was meant for mobile so I'm surprised it took them this long to add. Excited for the new content!

  • I've been using Steam Link to play Mini Motorways on my iPad - since I don't want to pay Apple for their subscription thing.

Works great once you set the resolution to 4:3 and set Steam's touch settings - I don't see why this wouldn't also work for Into The Breach as well. I'll test this later to confirm, but this should be a viable way to play on mobile without a Netflix subscription.

  • I've updated the post to clean up some grammar, added bits of info upon further re-reading, e.g. ALL existing platforms will get the free AE content update, including Nintendo Switch owners !

That said, for folks who might now be interested in buying the Nintendo Switch version of Into the Breach ahead of the July 19 free update, according to Deku Deals there isn't a Nintendo eShop sale at this present time (last discounted sale was A$8.75 back in May 2022), and is at full price A$17.50

I purchased it and have to say, I've lost of lot of sleep due to the addictive and fun nature of the game.

It's a strategy/turn based/rpg/puzzle game, you play as various teams of mech through several islands broken up into grids to kill monsters. You unlock various abilities that let you hurt/move/debilitate monsters and while being fairly simple, there's enough depth to have fun.

    • Welcome to the fun and addictive gameplay of Into the Breach :) … its a good time to get familiarized with it before the soon-to-be-released Advanced Edition content update

If you haven't yet tried it, Subset Games made their mark with Faster Than Light (aka FTL)

      • +1

I have and love FTL but have my issues with the brutal RNG of it, the boss fight is also pretty rubbish/unfair too.

  • I may be a ‘noob’ and need to ‘get good’, but this game is surprisingly difficult, right from the beginning. I’ve played FF Tactics, xcom, Disgaea, Advance Wars etc but this feels extremely punishing for the average player.

I really love the visual design and deceptive simplicity of it but I would hazard a guess many people will struggle. I would have appreciated a bit of a ramp up in difficulty and more explanation of strategies you can use like sacrificing the mechs, or push combos.

    • Have you been playing for some time or you only just recently bought the game and still fairly new to playing it?

I struggled initially with Into the Breach as well, no shame in admitting it! … to get better at it:

      • you have to really pay attention to, and focus on, carefully observing enemy Veks' grid positioning, their order of attack, their offensive/defensive and their passive/active abilities …
      • … and then come up with your own sequence of actions that tries to use tactical positioning and actions of your own squad's mechs, in any given turn during a mission to give you the best chance of surviving and thriving against enemy Vek, whilst trying to achieve mission objectives and get precious Reputation points (currency) or random Equipment items with which to further upgrade your Mechs
      • And there's several other facets that make ITB such an interesting strategy/puzzle game, just one of these as an example: choosing specific available Pilot (i.e. that Pilot's unique abilities) for a specific Mech (given its own equipment and battlefield abilities) to try and have a good synergy

Anyway, I hope you're sticking with it, and enjoy the rewarding feeling of pulling off successful tactics against the Vek during missions with greater familiarisation of your Mech squad's unique strengths and abilities, and once you start getting into things like completing challenges and achievements, these earn you 'coins' that helps to unlock additional and uniquely different Mech squads …
