  • Is this any good for my daughter or is there anything similar different brand or specs for better price, cheaper the better.

    • +2

Better to buy a 14"or 13" one for a school girl.

    • +5

This laptop would be good for general computing tasks like web browsing, office, etc, and some 2D gaming / older 3D gaming.
I don't think you'd be able to find anything better than this for the price especially with a IPS display like this one does. Usually you get much worse laptops in this price range.

    • If your daughter is at primary school, this would be sufficient https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/709583

      • Pathetic resolution & screen size.
With slimmer edges, 40cm (diagonal) is the optimal useable size screen.

      • +3

        Please don't.

      • +2

        whoa 4GB & Celeron CPU.

Only buy that if you want it to be prelude to how your daughter starts hating windows laptop because that spec would definitely ruin anyone's impression 😅

    • 1.85kg is too heavy for daily backpack carry. You will find most girls at school using a 13-14” laptop with way better resolution than full HD.

      • Which one are you recommending the one listed in this post or the smaller one recommended a few posts above?
It probably be used at home as i don’t think they take these to primary im sure just use school ones.
It might be different at high school but that’s a few years away yet and I maybe wrong ain’t they required to take these there?

    • I would suggest this one if you can afford the price.

  • Is the ram expandable on this?

    • +3

Yes, 4GB soldered however has a RAM slot which is occupied by a 4GB DIMM from factory. Officially that slot takes up to an 8GB DIMM so 12GB total.

  • +5

No type c charging :'( was so close to being a purchase.

    • What does that mean then?

      • USB Type C is a generic interface so replacing the charger would be easier than a charger with older barrel (round) connector and a particular voltage power AC-DC "brick" connected to it.

I wouldn't care as it makes no difference to the performance of the laptop and I've never seen a charger fail (had hundreds of laptops at my work). I've only seen someone mangle the barrel connector and you'd just get a matching charger on Ebay.

I think this laptop is a good deal.

        • +4

it's more about portability and only having to take one charger for everything.

        • Surprisingly, I've had 2 x 65w Lenovo USB-C chargers from 2 different ThinkPads fail within a couple of months.

        https://www.howtogeek.com/211843/usb-type-c-explained-what-i…

It's not really a huge downside for a laptop (especially one that's under $600 dollars) to lack USB-C charging, but something to keep in mind is that if you misplace your laptop's AC adapter or it's cables, you'll need to replace it with a compatible unit, since it's a proprietary connector.

USB-C cables are slightly more universal, so long as you have a USB-Cable that supports PD and with the right wattage ratings, it can be used to charge any USB-C device.

      • You cant use those pimp docks that have power/video/peripherals all in one cable.

  • Perfect priced and spec'd school/uni machine

    • My daughter is turning 10 and wants a laptop maybe cause she has used them at school. If this cheaper elsewhere by any chance we was thinking an Xmas gift I honestly think she is too young for such device

      • I don't think 10 is too young with supervision but I'm not a parent so what would I know?

      • +2

You probably have to figure out what she wants it for. Anything social would be a big no. 10 year olds don't need Instagram, tiktok, Facebook, etc which I imagine would be the desired usage.

If it's just to play games and do schoolwork, sure, but I somehow doubt that's the case.

Honestly, you might be better off with a Switch for peace of mind for a similar price.

      • I'd wait till she is 11 and get it for the next Christmas. I'm sure there will something with better specs and this price range next year too. What you really want to control is network access. Without that no online stuff can be done and it pretty much becomes a paperweight. If you have something like Google Nest or similar you can put it on a Family WiFi setting where you can control the times and days the network is available and pause/unpause the network access based on that. When my kids got too much into their screens I settle them back 'into the real world' with these settings.

  • +1

    Looks good.. i5 10th gen… How does this compare to i5 8th gen or i7 7/8th gen?

    • +1

Will be a pretty good step from i7 7th gen but not a big step up from i5 or i7 8th gen

  • Does the USB C port support video for a second display? Highly unlikely

  • You get kids might appreciate this HP Chromebook better.

It has better display, lighter, works as a touchscreen tablet, secure and can install apps with parental control on your kids account. It is only 11” though.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-x2-11-chromebook-128gb…

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is also good but would only recommend 8GB Ram version for a smooth experience. I know Chromebooks don’t need much high specs but from my experience, 4gb ram with Chrome multiple tabs on chromebooks, you will start to stutter.

The Lenovo also comes with a much better 13” OLED display and a pen with double the space than HP so I think it is a much better buy.

Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5 Chromebook, Snapdragon 7c Gen 2, 8GB RAM, 256GB eMMC, 13.3 Inch FHD, Detachable Keyboard, USI Pen, Chrome OS, Storm Grey, 82QS000AAU https://amzn.asia/d/fqXFSXc

    • Tit for tat. At 1.85kg this really isn't targeted for school kids.

Are you good with chrome OS or need full windows? Chrome file management is a pita.

Chrome books a better consumption device, this is all work.

      • Well you'll have to pay for super portability and good specs. LG Gram would be my recommendation, theyre just under a kilo and great specs but they won't be cheap.

This one posted earlier is really good value but ar 1.3 kg. Would personally consider this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/709452

For kids and for under 1k, there's also Surface Go but you'll have to buy even the keyboard extra. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/microsoft-surface-go-3-10…

Or there's also the Surface Laptop Go but make sure you look for the 8Gb ram version.

  • Do you know if this has a num pad on the right, or just the numbers at the top?
I can see different pictures in different places, but not sure about the Lenovo 15.6" IdeaPad Slim 3i 8 on the Office Work website

    Thank you!

      • Thank you !
I can see that's for the IdeaPad 3 15IML05 ; and that's the same as the IdeaPad Slim 3i 8 from the Office Work deal?

  • -3

For less than $100 more (including GC, cashbacks) the other Lenovo deal craps all over this one.
(The only negative is the soldered RAM.)

    • how to get cash back?

      • PayPal cashback is on TGG front page, Intel cashback link is on page of each Evo laptop.

    • +1

      Almost $250 more?

      • Maybe should have written after instead of including.

  • There is similar model with Intel n4020 and n6000. How does n6000 compare to i3 or i5? I'm so confuse on so many diff CPUs…

    • The n6000 is on its own low power architecture compared to i3/i5 etc. The n6000 is a good choice for a laptop for basic usage but requiring great battery life but an i3 even would still be a much better performer.

  • this deal or the asus vivo book? for 679$ ?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-vivobook-15-6-fhd-th…

    • This deal for the better screen. The Asus has a 11th Gen Intel and this is 10th Gen Intel. If it's even noticeable the CPU speed difference will not matter as much as the screen you're staring at for hours at a time. IPS over non-IPS any day.

  • Goodguys have these for $639!! If you are keen buy them during todays 15% cashback at Cashrewards - price comes to $543.14. Plus you will get $80 Store credit with expiry of 7 days - price comes to $463.15. I hope my maths correct :)

    • Link please?

      • TGG model: $639

But TGG one is not FHD, only 1366 x 768.

    • +1

These two are different models, the one from TGG is 81WB01DGAU, which is HD; but one from OW is FHD.

    • +1

I think you're looking at this one. It's not the exact same model. Big difference is the screen (Good Guys one is 1366x768). Link to Good Guys:
      https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-slim-3i-156-in…

If buying do a spec by spec comparison. The cheaper one will have at least one thing that is different.

      • very confusing with the laptop series naming, same series model, but different spec, devil in the details.

same goes with Intel CPU naming, I like good old days they named their chips as 286, 386, 486 and Pentium…

  • does it come with international warranty?
