Amazon Kindle 4 Wi-Fi Only, $97 NEW Woolworths, Not Sure Which Stores

1160

My daughter wanted a Kindle so I was planning to get one from Amazon US. But when I went to Woolies this morning, I remembered that they were selling the Kindle. I asked the price and it was just $97 which is lower than the US$109 that Amazon is asking and I don't have to pay for delivery.

Update 30/05/2012: Seems like it's still on sale. Call your local Woolies first to see if it's in stock. They are kept at the service desk.
-Kindle Generation 4 (WiFi) = $97
-Kindle Gen 3 with keyboard & WiFi = $95
-Kindle Gen 3 w/ keyboard, WiFi & 3G = $149.95

Original Amazon Kindle cases are also on sale:
-Gen 4 case with light $??? (most stores are out of stock on this one)
-Gen 4 leather case $17.50
-they also have cases for the Kindle with keyboards.

Mooooo says that the Kobo 6" wireless ereader is $83 from JB HiFi.

    I never stop being specials.

    • +3

does that mean you're never worth full rrp?

edit: read your post as you were always 'on' special

  • Which woolies was it that you got from?

  • can these be hacked I think I read b4 & used as android wifi tablets….

    • +3

no, this is the eink version

    • +5

I think you might be thinking of the Kindle Fire mate. These have a B/W screen and a very slow CPU

      • Agreed

      • apart from reading books, any thing can you do with them? online radio? mp3?

        • +3

          Nope.

They don't even do text-to-speech books which the older Kindle Keyboards do.

Which is why I'd prefer to pay $99 for a Kindle Keyboard refurb (with full warranty).

        • The Kidle Keyboard (Kindle 3) has MP3 playback capabilities, wifi web browser, facebook and twitter integration and text to speech, which I dont think this version does.

YouTube search: Kindle Wi-Fi vs Kindle Keyboard Page Turns

I think this is the main reason people might want a wifi over the keybaord.

        • +3

          @Danam - I did. Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAR6bSwF69Q

          Basically no practical difference.

        • +1

          What's a Kidle Keyboard?

        • +2

Hey Tantryl, it's not the speed that's the issue for some. You can see the kindle keyboard flash black every time it changes a page. The kindle 4 does a partial refresh for each page turn, with a full black flash only every 5/6 pages. Horses for courses.

        • +4

Slightly annoying to a tiny segment of the population black page flash? Really? Wow. People are weird.

        • +9

It's worth noting that you barely see the flash IRL; as usual camera framerates during capture compound the visibility of this extremely minor issue. Unless of course you guys actually thought that wagon wheels really did roll backward in westerns? :p

As usual, I see a lot of negs for Eanan & Tantryl's comments, but nobody with a logical argument to refute the simple verifiable facts presented; aside from pedantry over the screen thing of course…congrats OzB, you're officially getting dumber! :)

        • +4

Tantryl makes valid points — the K4 sacrifices a lot of features for portability's sake and it also has reduced memory and battery life.

Amazon did to the Kindle 4 what Apple did to the current iPod nano — make it smaller, +dumb it down by taking features out of it.

        • +2

I was pretty anti-ebook until my girlfriend bought me the Kindle 4 before a trip overseas - now I love it to bits. The size of the thing is the main draw for me. It's length and width dimensions are about the same as a mass-market paperback while being only a few millimetres thick. I feel as though the keyboard version would take away the joy of using the device by adding that extra bulk.

      • the fire is already an android tablet, no need for hacking

        • +1

Its a forked Android, no longer has access to Play store.

      • +1

For reading novels, this Kindle 3 screen is hard to beat, easier on the eye than New Ipad IMHO.

  • are these brand new or refurbs?

    • +1

      read the title lol

      • lol missed that - the box looked like a refurb box but never seen kindle boxes b4

        • Yeah, they come in plain boxes when brand new. I think they were shooting for an environmentally friendly look.

        • Its a Amazon certified "frustration free packaging". The branding is over the top, but its actually fairly good, and no human proof blister packs.

  • Has anyone found another woollies that sell Kindles for that price in Victoria? In which aisle are they stocked?

    • +2

In my local Woolies they are beside the entrance near the service desk.

      • +1

on the left or the right?

  • Damn, just ordered one from amazon.

Anyone know any Qld stores selling them?

  • +1

The one in Ballarat central still has a single one left if an ozbargainer wants to grab it.

    written at 6:49 Sunday night

  • Off to woolies tomorrow to see if i can snag one.

  • they are usually around the service desk.

  • Are theses the ones with Ads (special offers) or without?

    • +2

They don't have those in Australia.

      • +1

I believe that there's a hack/workaround of some sort that can actually get you the special offers on the Aussie model! :)

  • -2

The kindle keyboard 3 refurbs from dick smtih for $90 (I think thats the price) is a much better deal IMO. They're practically new, and the kindle keyboard has lots more features than this, including better battery life, bigger flash drive, physical keyboard, speakers built into it, MP3 Playback, headphone jack built in etc.

    • +4

$99 from both DSE & BigW.

Also includes full 1 year warranty.

  • +1

Thanks for posting this Jobics. I just rushed down to Woolworths at Camberwell, Victoria and picked one up for $97 ($43 off says the docket). The employees knew nothing about a sale, but they scanned it for me anyway. For all those who prefer the Kindle keyboard, they had one of these that scanned $95. Had to think twice about which one I wanted, but the page refreshing is so much better on the Wifi (being a Kindle 4, not 3 like the keyboard) so I went for that.

Thanks again! Saved some money off the girlfriends b'day present… now I just need to get the $60 case (sigh)

    • +1

Just buy a case off eBay. $15 and it comes with free screen protectors.

      • yeah, I'm looking atm. trying to find one with a slick built in light like the $$$ one.

      • Are screen protectors worth it? Given the different display type?

        • No.

          Having tried it… no.

          Cases aren't necessary either.

Having dropped it… many times… no need.

        • The display is not capacititive touch. Nor is the display resistive, it uses infrared sensors to "see" where your finger is.

So having the screen protector does not affect screen responsiveness. It might introduce a bit of glare though, depending on whether the protector is matte or not. I don't think it's neccessary at all if you use a case.

        • e-ink screens are different, but the Kobo I bought my mum definitely needed a screen protector. It's scratched on certain parts of the screen from leaving it face down on the coffee table etc

        • +3

@schrimshaw - It's no kind of touch screen. You don't get anything out of touching the screen but fingerprint marks.

You seem to be thinking of the Kindle Touch - not the same as the Kindle 4.

        • The Kindle is extremely durable. I've never used a case for mine and thrown it into backpacks while travelling and it's still fine.

        • I have the sony touch… The screen protectors are glossy, the case light reflects off the gloss which is annoying, but saves the screen from those fine scratches.

Check ebay for cheap deals. I think I paid ~$6 for 2.

        • +3

Holy crap. Up till this day I didn't know the Kindle 4 wasn't touch based.

        • There's a Kindle 4 touch as well!

        • This totally blew my mind.

      • Which I know they have 3 types case, one with the light $29.99 and the others two which without light (they are leather case) for $20 and $17.

  • +1

Purchased Kindle WIFI keyboard for $95.00 and leather cover with light to suit for $29.99(Half price) from W/W Glenelg in SA. Still plenty of kindles and covers to suit all models left. Can confirm that these are New, with seals and tear away cardboard openers still present. Good deal!

    • DId you see kindle keyboard 3g ? Thats the one i want.

      • +1

yeah my local had a heap. woolworths newcastle

        • are they discounted as well ?

        • yep sure are! i bought 2.. as i couldnt decide between with or without a keyboard

    • hey micsav09, are you able to post your receipt on here?? I went to the Perth CBD Woolies and they are still scanning the Kindle WIFI keyboard for $147

    • Hey, was the cover you got with the light? and authentic kindle cover?

      Thanks!

      • Got the last kindle cover with light for $29.99 from Altona North VIC Woolworths. They now have kindle cover without light for $19.99, likewise with Woolworths South Melbourne.

        • Can you possibly scan and post the invoice for the case with light so I can do a price match at Big W or DSE?

    • +1

The same could be said for school kids and their oversized backpacks, holding iPhones / consoles playing games and not even paying attention where they're shoving their bags into peoples faces.

      • +5

and let's not forget, people with books

        • +4

          …Broadsheets.

        • -3

Ive never seen someone reading a book while walking on a crowded platform… keep trying to deflect the facts

        • +1

Um. I used to do that all the time. Back in the 90s.

I rarely bumped into people (although it's entirely possible people avoided me 'cause they could tell I wasn't looking).

        • maybe it depends on the title of the book you were reading

      • -6

Exactly except in this case we are talking about kindles…. derp

    • +6

      Just shove them back

    • +10

I'll take a nerd with an ebook reader any day…there's a far bigger menace!

Parents with those bloody giant strollers for a single kid piss me off…they're as big as a small car, and don't they just think it's their God-given right to park them smack-bang in the middle of a bus or train aisle, building hallway or in front of any other major thoroughfare!!! I saw one ignorant pig of a woman giving filthy looks to a dude in a wheelchair on a bus once coz he needed the space her massive stroller was occupying in the disabled seats, so after much 'harrumphing' the lazy bitch had to fold up her unnecessarily giant stroller & let the driver wreck his back lifting it into the luggage cage.

What happened to using commonsense & having a small, easily folding travel stroller for public transport??? The new class of inconsiderate jerk is the modern parent I'm afraid.

      • +5
        • Good read Davo, nice to know it's not just me noticing this…cheers! :)

    • +3

Try sitting next to tossers unfolding the Australian…. It really is not a public transport newspaper…

      • +1

lol its good to see that im not alone in my disgust for public transport and ignorant…

    • +1

Doesn't the lack of pages to turn mean less elbow movement?

  • +1

It's a strange deal- this is the second time I've seen it mentioned here- no advertising by Woolies at all, and the staff don't know anything about it.

  • This is not the touch screen Kindle. Still it's good value. But if you are not desperate, new Kindles will be released soon - possibly with integrated light like the new Nook, colour eink, blah blah blah.

  • OK, I can report back that this deal is not nation wide,at least not for SW Sydney.

  • +1

Stupid question and please excuse my ignorance.. with the kindle can you use it at night without a light on? Someone above mentioned getting a case with a light in it.

    • +8

No, it doesn't have a built in backlight behind the screen as its not a traditional LCD. Its like your basically reading an actual book, so you need a light source to see it if its dark.

Its like this so your eyes dont strain from reading like if it was a normal LCD display like an iPad.

      • Awesome thanks for the reply!

    • +3

easiest way to explain it is to think of it as reading off paper, there is very little difference with regard to eye strain and the like. You will find it very difficult (depending on how much light is around you of course)

    • +3

Until the release of the Kindle with integrated light, you will need to get a separate light or buy a case with light to read in the dark.

    • +6

The display has no backlighting. It depends on ambient lighting to reflect off (or not) the black and white pixels. So if you have enough light to read off paper, you can read e-ink. If not, you need to turn on a light. Advantage of e-ink is extremely low power consumption. It only consumes a bit of power to change a pixel's state (flipping a page) and other times the pixel can remain static without any power.

    • +6

      Let me guess…professional troll, right?

      • +2

Apparently he/she probably never read a book. I have both ipad and kindle keyboard and you simply cannot compare. Kindle hands down for sure.

      • +4

It's a fancy chopping board. Troll success.

        • +6

I negged you even though I don't have a kindle. Stop trolling dude

    • +10
