US - Australian Buyer Only Tax

Do other OzBargainers find that numerous US websites are switching prices from their regular US price to a much higher 'Australian-only' price that's much higher than the currency conversion ?

We should name and shame those websites that are truly taking us for a ride.

Submit evidence below:

Exhibit A.
Xgimi MoGo Pro
FHD Android TV Portable Projector
U$399 (was U$499) 20% off

Evidence is of a good quality product.

Link to purchase site:
https://us.xgimi.com/products/mogo-pro
However, opening the link takes the buyer to Amazon.com which gives you a price of A$899.00

According to currencylive.com 399.00 United States Dollars equals 581.89 Australian Dollars

Rather than a 20% discount this a 55% increase in the price.

Has anyone seen a worse deal lately?!?

Numerous? You found 1 obscure one who is most likely shipping from China… Not the greatest example

And your ibb.co urls don't exist

    • Updated the links, not sure why they expired already.
I find this thing all the time, very frustrating that when I go to a US site like Amazon, ebay, macys, etc the prices change from their standard US pricing to an Australian price which is often higher after conversion.

  • Seems this 20% discount was either for subscribing or a limited time as it shows $499.00 USD for me which is $728 AUD currency exchange wholesale price and not including taxes. So that is an unfair comparison.

The XGIMI store Amazon AU page doesn't mention the "Xgimi MoGo Pro" only the "Xgimi MoGo Pro+" model. So is it really their own store selling it or just an old link? I'd say it's an old link! Why? The RRP was $849 on Amazon also it should have been shipped and sold by Amazon AU not some random 3rd party storefront.

So It's extremely likely it's one of those storefronts that buys items and then attempts to resell them for more $. No one would pay their price but that is all that is left so that is what the page says. Nothing knew Amazon/eBay/Kogan/any market place really is full of them.
As far as I can tell that particular product is discontinued or having major supply issues.

If you can actually get the $399 USD rate then find a freight forwarder. Other wise time machine? :)

    • I only used the US xgimi and Amazon sites, but they detect that I'm in Australia even with private browser page.
I was going to skip it to a freight forwarder but the price is already so much higher is not worth it.

Well it just looks like the 20% offer is for US customers only and doesn't apply in other regions. That's not uncommon. They don't have to offer the same thing everywhere at the same time.
