These machines don't get enough love on ozb. Most seem to think Breville is the be all, end all

    • -4

Which is funny because Breville is the Mimco of coffee machines. 😂

From my experience, Brevilles support has gone massively downhill in recent years. I raised an issue with my coffee machine and got a very dismissive response back in broken English. It was so bad that I double checked that I hadn't accidentally stumbled on a scam website badged with Breville branding, but nope, it was legit Breville support. Tried logging another ticket just in case I'd been unlucky, but basically got the same response.

Super disappointing considering the premium they charge on their products.

  • Anyone with one of these want to chime in on their experiences?

    • I'm lazy but here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/sunbeam-em5300
Lots of comments in the past

Have had mine for several months now. It's pretty darn good at making a decent coffee, but a couple of things are beginning to annoy me:

      • The coffee grinder can be very messy. Sometimes it grinds just fine into the group head, other times it flicks coffee all over the place
      • The steam pressure is occasionally a bit weak

      Minor annoyances though.

I'd suggest looking into a funnel or a dosing cup for the first issue

      • With the steam wand, it needs to be cleaned with some milk frother cleaner pretty regularly

    • Had one a couple of years, recently upgraded to a Breville dual boiler. This was fine, leaked water a bit towards the end but otherwise no issues. One thing that would annoy me now though is the manual grinder.

Have had one for around 2 years now. Paid around this price for it back then. For the $$ is is a great machine. You are not going to get anything better around this price point. The only benefit I see for the Breville Barista Express is that the grinder can be dose controlled automatically. This machine you need to hold the group handle down in the grinder until you feel there is enough beens ground. I measure my beans and only tip that amount into the grinder so I know it is the correct dose. As mentioned below, the grinder does make some mess although a paper towel under it to catch the mess helps cleanup. For half the price of the express, this is a no brainer.

Make 2 coffee twice a day (most days), I think this machine is fantastic VFM.
      Consistent, robust, relatively quick.
Only real con (as noted by others) is the grinder can be messy.

I'm not a massive coffee snob, and I don't really live a life that gives me 15 minutes to ponder over the subtle evolution of the flavour profile of a perfectly extracted espresso shot as it slides across the palate, but I reckon I churn out something pretty close to cafe level, to the point where I'd find if very hard to believe a $X00 grinder plus $X000 dual boiler system would substantially change my life.

  • If it had a gauge…

Noob question, how does this compare to Breville Barista Express? Design and function seems to be very similar

    • Was about to ask the same question, I have the older Breville Barista Express BES860 that I got from Gumtree in terrible condition and it's gradually been having more and more issues. Not sure if this would be a huge downgrade though.

  • I am using mine for last 8-9 months. Great machine for the price. Adjusting the grind size and getting used to the right tamp is the key, i'd say.

Mine broke after 12 months of every day use. That being said I didn't really keep up with the maintenance schedule because I'm a lazy lad. Great machine otherwise :D

  • I've had mine for a few months. Same thing as @interfreak. There are often lots of grinds to clean up afterwards.

Also the steamer does this thing where it shoots bit of water out first, starts for a second and then stops for a few seconds. Not sure if this is normal?

Otherwise it does the job well.

    • +1

Yup squirting out a bit of water at the beginning is normal, as is the initial start/stop/start.

  • I have this machine. She's been pretty good, makes a decent coffee. Better than most of the coffeeshops around. The key is to adjust the grind size and get used to the frother. The first one I bought stopped working in a few months, Amazon sent me a new one. No issues ao far. Probably the best CM you can get for this price now.

  • What's the story with 'waitlist'? Has the deal expired?

    • Click join waitlist and keep checking back, you'll also get a notification on the app if you have it. If you get in you only have about 5 minutes to buy.

    • yep, 100% claimed. you might get if some buyers decided not to go ahead if you join waitlist.

    • Waitlist is to make it available first in, first serve to anyone who has joined it if someone cancels their order before shipping; I believe.

  • Question, anyone have fully automatic machine? There have been number of deals on fully automatic machine for around $500 mark. How do these compare to the manual machines? In particular, how hard is it to clean an automatic machine?

  • the deal's sold out now unfortunately :'0

  • Anyone know where to get spare cleaning disks (not the cleaning tablets, the disk itself) for these? I think I accidentally threw mine out with the packaging…

    • Guessing you have looked behind the drain tray?

Otherwise I am sure you can get a replacement from Sunbeam phone support.
