Is It Okay to Mix Different RAM on The Motherboard?

I wanted to repurpose my old motherboard (Asus H70M-Plus with i5-6500) for a new build. It currently has 2 x 8GB DDR4 (Kingston HX421C14FBK2/16 1.2v ram in 2 slots). I would like to expand to 32GB by populating another 2 x 8GB ram onto the motherboard.

I couldnt find the exact same ram on Amazon anymore - would it be okay to use any other type of ram as long as these are DDR4 and 1.2V?

Technically you can and they'll all run at the lowest speed/spec but really not recommended.

    • thanks for the quick reply. Does this make the system unstable and prone to crashes?

It could, but very equally it may not and just be perfectly fine.

Might be best shot if you can stick to Kingston brand with another similar product they offer.

        • yes ok. so as long as it is also kingston, 1.2V and a ram with faster speed than what I currently have…chances are i am fine?

@jeeg: Fingers crossed. Amazon returns if not.

@Hybroid: thanks bud. appreciated the help.

Linus Tech Tips says it's perfectly fine 99.99% of the time. He wasn't shilling for some RAM company in that video so you can probably trust him. When he is shilling though you should never trust him, he's basically reading off a script written by the marketing department of whoever is paying him this week…

        • thanks i will search for that video on youtube. I have not seen that one.

No, mixing ddr4 ram brand will not cause crashes.

As long as you match the primary RAM specs (DDR4, same MHz, same voltage) then you should be fine. Unless you're overclocking I really wouldn't stress too much about it.

If it doesn't work, at worst case, you could sell your old two sticks of RAM and buy two more sticks to match your new ones.

    • thanks mate. nah no overclocking.

if it is 1.2v it is JEDEC speeds, so 2133 by the part number

It would be almost impossible to run into problems when running JEDEC speeds like this regardless of what other DDR4 kit you matched with it.

The probs are more with mixing XMP kits at higher speeds as they are semi-official over-clocking rather than true official memory speed/spec standards, which is what JEDEC speeds actually are.

    • thanks for the tech info. Appreciated mate.

  • Better to avoid it rather than worrying later with OS crashes and data loss.

    Kingston HX421C14FBK2 Is DDR4-2133.
    You can use any DDR4-2133

    • thanks mate.

  • If in doubt, buy 2 x 16GB (or 4 x 8), and sell your old sticks on Ebay etc. :)
