    Hmm, I'm already a YHA member, but you raise an interesting point about Summit Club. Would it be worthwhile for to join to get a discount on a backpack? I'm sure I would spend more than $100 on it. But then I would also comparison shop at Paddy Palins and others first.

    For those who travel, I find buying membership in other countries is cheaper. For example, if you were heading to the US (who have an ever increasing number of hostels), you can join for $28. I haven't tried online, but a quick scan suggests that you can get it sent to Australia.
