"Scissors" is such a bad & outdated tip! A tip from a time before the Internet!
And yet it is the image on the book cover!

Cutting up your credit card won't stop the debt you may be in, future direct debits, fraud, etc!
Having a physical card is often not the problem. Many purchases don't usually involve handing over a physical card.

Credit cards are great if you know how to use them properly and have the discipline. They can save you thousands.

If you don't have the discipline, then sure, stay away from them.

Thought I might as well elaborate though most of you already know!

      • Free travel insurance
      • Price protection and claim the difference
      • Frequent flyer rewards / bonuses on purchases and applications
      • Interest free days which allow you to keep your money in your offset for an extra 40 to 50 days
      • Credit Balance transfers - Kogan gave me $24k interest free for 3 years…which will save me about $2,500 on my mortgage as money can sit in offset
      • Mobile Screen protection
      • Rental car insurance - covering the excess in an accident

Get rid of credit cards? No way!

If you have any direct debits set up, and the merchant double bills you or their database gets hacked, then I can just contact my credit card provider, and dispute any bogus transactions. In the worst case, I cancel the credit card and get a new one.

Compare this with doing the same via direct debit from a bank account. Your money is gone, and while you'll probably get your money back, it could take months. And if the bank account was your home loan offset account, it could be a LOT of money.

  • step one: have money

Kinda dumb book, don't spend your money till you have to is my rule.. Credit Cards are genius for that plus the insurance and things that comes along with it.. perhaps don't buy stuff you can't afford is more appropriate but guessing that's like tip #4 in this cash grab book.

    • +2

Yep, just a little common sense. Live within your means and budget. Make a budget and see where you are spending your money. Credit card debt is ridiculously high, about 22%. There are other options like afterpay that spread the payments over 4 months not UP TO 55 days. There's a couple of tips for free.
