I’ve got three of these and sometime in the last 6 months there must of been a software update and now they can’t connect to wifi after a random amount of time. Factory reset fixes them for a few days and then bricked again. 💩

If it wasn’t for the Hub Max I got during TGG price error, I would of switched to Alexa. Google are just shit at hardware.

    • +19

On the flip side we've got 5 of these and they all work perfectly. I think you should check your router.

    • +1

I haven't had any problems with the minis like you describe, but if i had a dollar every time google assistant mixed up on and off i'd be filthy rich. In hindsight i would have waited for homepod minis or echo dots.

    • +2

You are right about the shit hardware. Try switching your router 5ghz to 40mhz band. See if that helps.

    • +2

Have you got them connected to 5ghz wifi?

Have you got the channel as auto?

They do seem to have a bug where they won't connect when the channel goes to 149 and above.

      • +1

I've got this problen too, mine is set to auto and I can see it connected as 2.4.
        Aus rt-ax55

No other devices I have still supporting only 2.4 have this issue.

I have been experiencing something similar with a LIFX bulb and some TP-Link smart plugs. They stop working as scheduled and need to be rebooted regularly when up until now they worked flawlessly. I have troubleshooted everything including setting them up again and it's definitely not the WiFi because they worked well up until now.

I am thinking it is either a problem with the devices getting broken "auto firmware updates" or some kind of issue resulting from the recent critical patches for a tonne of routers I read about in a recent article.

Anyway I am now hesitant in purchasing these "smart" products which rely on the cloud to function properly. They depend too much on internet connection, stop functioning for whatever reason and the old mechanical timer seems to do a more reliable job.

      • My mate had a very similar issue - turned out to be his shitty ISP supplied router only allowed 16 IP addresses over wifi, so whenever he brought his work laptop home and/or he had people visiting who connected to wifi some of his smart home devices would randomly drop off the network. Rare but worth checking!

        • Thank you bozleh that is helpful info.
I actually remember having a look at one of the Mesh WiFi system's and seeing around 16 devices showing as connected.
The thing is we are using a ISP supplied router with the onboard WiFi disabled, and 2x Mesh WiFi systems are plugged into individual ethernet ports on back of the ISP router to supply the WiFi signal.

So do you know if each "Ethernet port" on the ISP router is limited to 16 IP addresses also? Because with 2x Mesh WiFi systems plugged in and spread out there would be around 25+ devices connected total for many years now and none of those devices have had any issues.

And in before the 5Ghz/2.4Ghz issue is mentioned, I have plenty of 2.4Ghz devices connected without any issue it is just the LIFX bulb and TP-Link smart plugs which have the issue of needing to be rebooted.

    • My 4 all work perfectly.
Had a mate with similar problems to yours and it was his router and internet in the end.

      • +1

I’ve got 2 minis and the Google nest mesh wifi

All works a treat. No issues at all

    • +1

I have 2 of the original google minis and they've worked fine over the past few years. Then I bought a new google nest mini last December and it keeps turning off randomly, not sure if I got a faulty one.

      • Yeah I've got a Nest Mini that randomly turns off, along with another one that's fine. They're linked as a stereo pair.

Need to pull the plug and plug it back in to get it going again.

    • I'm receiving a similar issue with my Nest Mini, will have to check the router as others have suggested, but so far I just stopped using it because it was becoming a pain needing to reboot every 2 days to get it to work.

    • My router is an Orbi that is rock solid.

    • Got this same issue.

    • Yes!!! I thought it was just me. Mine all stopped working too.

    • I've found google to have very lax quality control for their hardware. When they work they work great though.

    • I bought 3 so I could move music round the house, a couple of days of my life trying to get it to work. Set one up again tonight, first thing I asked it to do failed. These things are supposed to make life easier, until they work reliably out of the box they are just the devil's sputum.

    • Have I got a TREAT for you then. If you are connecting to a 5Ghz wifi network and having these problems, it is likely that your router is changing channel(s) to reduce interference, which is what all routers do by default. This is fine, except for with some google home/nest devices:

"Google Nest support confirm that 5ghz Channel 149 and higher isn’t supported"

Check your router and see if you can manually set your 5Ghz channel to something in the lower end (36-48) and see if that fixes your issue.

I'd love to hear whether this change helps you out :)

  • Nice. Been thinking it'd be better to have a second one and spaced out better so I don't have to yell as much. And with the perks coupon, even better.

    • +2

Can still yell when they get it wrong and turn on/off the wrong stuff

  • +2

Thanks. Op, finally found a place to redeem my JB HiFi perks voucher.

    • +8

Not questioning the veracity of your segments, but could you point me in doing direction to some of those last $0 deals to keep them in mind in case they show up again? Thanks!

    • +2

Yes cheaper deals than did exist in past. But,
Free - that's a far fetched dream. Definitely want to know how/when/where did you get one.

      • -7

I have four. One came with my pixel 2, 2 came with Telstra points and one with Spotify family account.

        • +2

Hmm, so get this for free either buy a Pixel or use telstra points which can be used to buy a number of other stuff or enroll for a Spotify family subscription. Not a bad deal if you are after one of these and the freebie offer still exists.

          • -8

@rkm: The point is these are a giveaway item. There are so very many ways to get one for free and there have been for many years. Paying for one should be an absolute last resort 👍

            • +2

@Silvern: I want one today. Don’t need a phone right now. Please find me a deal?

        • +6

I mean technically you paid for these items via proxy, but okay…

That's like me trying to argue that some Hisense TVs are ONLY a deal if they're free because JB HiFi are always offering them for free with their Telstra mobile plans. Like, c'mon dude…

      • -2

It was couple years ago when you could get for free if you have YT premium, I had a family account so I claimed like 5 of them. Only then did I realise no one should have to pay for a device just so Google can eavesdrop on every conversation inside your home.

  • +2

What do people use these for? I'm not sure I want Google to be listening to everything that goes on in my house.

    • +3

I use it as a speaker… plays Spotify etc and to control my smart lights

      • Ah i see. Is the sound any good?

        • +1

I’m not much of an audiophile but it’s ok I guess for the size.

I was thinking of upgrading to something a bit beefier but for $29 I reckon it’s pretty good

Ps if your name is a geto boys reference, +1 (the nest mini may not have the requisite bass for my minds playing tricks on me or g-code)

          • @parsimonious one: It is indeed referring to Dr. Wolfgang Von Bushwickin’ the Barbarian Mother Funky Stay High Dollar Billstir. +1 For being down with the Boys from the Geto.

        • +1

The sound on these is surprisingly good and two can be paired for stereo.

    • Got one in the garage which is connected to fosi + bookshelf speakers + Bluetooth + garage.

I used to pull out my phone, connect via Bluetooth to the fosi amp, then play my songs. Now i just tell Google to do it. Also I can open the garage without my mobile on me (hopefully my neighbours aren't listening when I say the passcode).

      • What's fosi amp? Not sure what you mean you mean Hi-Fi?

        • Yeah, control the input to one of these

Fosi Audio BT10A Bluetooth 5.0 Amplifier Stereo Audio Receiver, 2 Channel Class D Mini Hi-Fi Integrated TPA3116 Amp, for Home Speakers 50W x 2, with 19V 4.74A Power Supply https://amzn.asia/d/0pQEI9W

    • I use mine mainly to ask for the weather and time when I ceebs finding my phone, occasionally to play music too.

  • +5

There are awesome. Use them for white noise with the baby / rain sounds

  • Has anyone found these good paired together or any issues?
I've an undercover outdoor area not being used ,5mx3.5m was gonna put a 'dumb' hd tv and the little Google tv box and possibly pair a set of these with it ,for a cheap entertainment/meals area .
Has any one done similar? I have seen on Amazon there is a range of brackets for these to screw to walls and hopefully even ceiling too. Any feedback would be great .

    • paired with the old chromecast i found it better than just the new chromecast, you just yell hey google play this or that from youtube on patio tv, or set volume to 5 and it does.
there is a hook hole on the back i wouldnt even bother with brackets just slide it over a screw head.
broadcast this is my favourite feature

      • Cheersmany thanks

    • I don't think you can pair the google minis with Chromecast with google tv for the purpose of having stereo speakers. Pretty sure you'd have to link them through Bluetooth and the lag is horrible (check YouTube videos) as google lost court case against Sonos .
It was one of my planned use case and sold them instead . Much prefer Alexa tbh.

      • Aah shit no ways, thanks for the feedback!

        • Apparently echo dots work perfectly for that use case (still DYOR)

  • +1

Why not get the Nest 2 for $56 with 20% cashback and $10 off from Mydeal that was posted earlier? it has the screen and more powerful speaker i think

  • -1

I have 2…well technically 1 as I gave the other to my wife. I also have an Echo Dot 3rd gen. They're excellent for messing around with for a few days for a laugh, and I can see how you'd need one for voice commanded lights or wall sockets. But honestly other than that they're an entertainment gimmick that wears thin quickly. The "AI" is worthless beyond being slightly better at understanding your voice than Dragon Dictate was like 30 years ago. Both Google and Amazon devices have silly quirks and I find having something always listening to be creepy. I wouldn't trust them to use them to order anything and if you can type that can be quicker for retrieving information. I guess playing media is quicker if you're not too fussy about your source.

    • +1

I find having something always listening to be creepy.

Could turn the mic off but defeats the purpose of the device but handy for casting music/podcasts etc.

Do you turn off assistant on your phone, that's always listening?

      Browsers are following you too.

      • As a matter of fact I do have the assistant on my phone off. I don't find voice that useful. You're broadcasting what you're doing to anyone within earshot.

While I don't love browsers tracking me, it's not the same as having Alexa or Google listen in on me and my wife in the bedroom. There is a difference between giving up some privacy for convenience and throwing up your hands and letting the corporations listen in on everything you do.

But hey this is Ozbargain, so I expect the anon downvotes and nonsensical arguments any time I post anything unpopular. Might as well be called Ozbullying at this point.

        • That's fair, just turn the mic off then and use as a Bluetooth speaker , then again better Bluetooth speakers around (but casting over wifi is miles better).

I've thought about that too but don't really care. Don't have too much to hide.

Turn the mic off if it gets too annoying, and the kitchen on responds instead of the mini right next to me. Will review that sensitivity setting but pretty silly.

  • Looks the same as the one I bought 6 years ago. At least amazon has updated their echo dot over the years.

  • These don't have a line out 3.5mm yeah? Only the original google home mini had it

    • None had it. Original had micro USB for powering, which was handy. Not sure why they did use USB C for V2 instead of "proprietary" port.

      • Oh ok so no way to connect it to a Hifi for better sound… They want you to buy the next unit up like Nest Hub 2 etc

I'm trying to figure how to do that with Echo dot and Google home minis

        • You may be able to "smarten" your hifi system if you can connect with Bluetooth through either build in or adaptor.
Maybe use an echo auto instead

          • @ShouldIBuyIt: You mean connect Google home mini or Echo dot via Bluetooth to Hifi? I got a logitech one Bluetooth to RCA but that's a receiver. I also have a Bluetooth transmitter transmitter adapter for the Hifi. No idea how to setup

            • @neonlight: I believe I've got the same Logitech device (probably from an ozb post lol)
For both google and echo you can go to the device settings and set up whether it uses the built-in speaker or Bluetooth.
Then the smart device which you can control by voice will send the audio feed to hi-fi through the Logitech adaptor

              • @ShouldIBuyIt: Nice one I will give it a try. And yes I’m using that Logitech one Bluetooth to RCA haha

        • I got a Chromecast Audio for that, got one for $15 at the end of production and can't get them anymore.. was a great product and nice sound. finally got sick of no gapless playback so got an RPi4 - you could go down that route but isn't an assistant device etc.

          • @G-rig: How does it work with that chromecast audio to hifi? Well I can't get one anymore just wondering

            • @neonlight: Shame they didn't keep selling.
It has an optical and 3.5mm output.

Would have been perfect for ya. I chased one down near the end, they had two left should have grabbed the other one.

              • @G-rig: sadly eBay listing as $49 + postage…..no way I would pay for that

                • @neonlight: That's not bad, lucky to find one at all these days.
                  Other streamers around I guess.

  • +1

Cute device but once the novelty wears off, it's just another useless thing lying around the house

  • You couldn’t pay me to have one of these, they are hot garbage. Have already seen other posters commenting on the same thing - they are absolutely terrible at maintaining a connection to wifi, and end up resetting themselves weekly when they lose this connection and can’t reconnect.

    Don’t, just don’t.

    • Do you have a wifi mesh system at home?

    • I've got 5 google home devices of various types for 4+ years now from the original to the max and none of them have had wifi connectivity issues

    • Mine never has in years, sounds like it's set up wrong, or a router issue. I've got a good HFC connection so never any issues.

  • Wish these have a self reboot option, they sometimes disconnect from wifi

  • BS when you ask a question and the mini right next to me answers first, then the hub mini in the kitchen answers as well straight after
