  • Tempting, but it's too late for me to escape google eco system 😔

    • +1

me too.. at least that's why I didn't bother
but the 2x 69 made me give it ago. not sure what's missing from "Google"..

      • +3

I bought (2x69) sold one on market lol

        • Not sure you are being negged but good job!

        • +1

Got two myself.. they make good xmas gifts

  • Is this just me or these Fire sticks go on sale quite often?

    • +4

It's not you, they always go on sale. Though maybe it's a little too soon to consider paying more than $35 for one.

      • Seing as lord of the rings isn’t coming out until 2 September there’s probably a good chance it’ll go on sale again.

Right now and until 5:29am tomorrow this is the cheapest

Odd time to end a promo

  • +4

It was $69 for two during Prime Day

    • +3

yes, I bought. wasnt expecting much but honestly best "smart tv" thingy I've used. also have nvidia shield.

      • In what ways is it better than the shield?

        • +8

          Price lol

        • +2

hmm not sure if better but just as good. never like the shield remotes. out if box firestick remote controlled my tv/av receiver. used to have to use 2x remotes but now just 1. remote also has dedicated prime, Netflix, Disney (and Amazon music) button.

i think prime app works better on this as well. not 100% sure. I think prime app maybe wasn't available on the shield but I remember having to use some third parry app store to install it.

          Alexa voice was surprisingly fast.

had issues with other devices not picking up atmos or 4k ultra.

firestock able to be powered by usb port (requires 9W).

downsides with firestuck has been on screen keyboard isn't qwerty, UI isn't as nice still very functional. worst is probably ad/shop stuff.

id imagine Amazon and their products can be off putting for some given how they use collected data. at the price they sell em for… you can guess why

          • @DONMAI: Ahh didn't think of that! Yes amazon data gathering

          • +3

@DONMAI: Data gathering can be turned off in settings

        • +1

you can control it without via smartphone / PC just with own remote controller and much faster than chrome cast

  • 2 for $70 is all time low.

  • +1

I gotta get a regular Fire TV Stick now cause the 4K Max doesn't work with the 3rd Gen Echo Dot

    • +1

      Return it under warranty

  • Why can't they officially support Kayo, Binge, BeIn Connect :(

    • Foxtel have no interest in supporting another streaming device/eco-system unfortunately.

    • +1

Kaylo and other Foxtel streaming apps (for Android for TV devices) can be sideloaded. Personally, I have given up on Foxtel after 25 years about a month back…. so cannot vouchers that any of their Android apps are up-to-date. They were very slow with their updates in the past. Their technical support has become absolutely pathetic and everything is now offshore and you are in the hands of clueless script-kiddies.

  • +1

I've got a downloader code for Kayo and Binge. I've adjusted it so you'll have a logo (not as nice as the android tv one). PM me if you want the code/s.

    • How did you adjust it to include a logo? I must say it's annoying having a blank logo.

      • Through an apk editor. Someone shared me link and away I went.

  • +1

A question for anyone that is using one of these: Does this show up as a device you can cast to from your phone/tablets YouTube app?

    • +2

Yes, it works just like the Chromecast

      • +1

I'll have to consider them in the future then. Lack of casting support was the main reason I got the Chromecast with Google TV for my parents, but all they need is YouTube casting.

  • Bear in mind these 4k sticks can't be easily unlocked and the Amazon-world firmware replaced with open source, customisable android version. The regular Fire TV Stick and the Fire TV Stick Lite can be, however. (These two Fire sticks are identical hardware despite the price difference, only the remote controls are different). I got one of the Lite sticks for $30 during an Amazon sale, so I guess they'll be available again at that price. It is now unlocked and happily running open source android tv.

    • benefits of having an open source android tv over the standard amazon one?

    • Didn't know this was possible. Do you have a link to a tutorial?

      • It's fun as long as you enjoy a bit of tinkering - not to be attempted if you don't feel comfortable. First step is unlocking with the instructions in the first posting here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlock-root-twrp-unbrick-…
Followed by (optional) installing of open source android, again with the instructions in the first posting here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-unofficial-11-lineage…
The modern equivalent of tinkering with your car's carburettor..

        • +2

I did that for years on my phone all the way back to my Motorola milestone (droid) but phones got good enough for me not to deal with the headache of rooting/bootloader etc.

If my previous attempts at doing this are anything to go by, there's probably a bunch of things that are buggy or don't work well. How has your experience been after this? Is it stable? Does evwrything work?

Edit: I just read the first few posts in thread, doesn't seem like much had changed in 10 years on xda😂

Thanks for sharing. I'll have a look

          • +1

@butter: Funny that you mentioned Motorola Milestone. It was my first Android device. I rooted it so many times that I broke the volume rocker buttons. Tried fixing it myself and broke it all.

        • One of the first lines in that guide is

          NOTE: FireOS < 7.2.7.3 required

Is this likely to be true if I bought one today?

          • @jonathonsunshine: Quite likely - my Fire TV Stick Lite was, bought direct from Amazon just a couple of weeks ago. But it is crucial to prevent it updating over the net before you perform the unlock.. If anyone's buying one with this in mind, important to ensure you read the posts I linked to above to be sure you know what's involved. I don't want to give the impression it's risk-free :)

    • +1

It's not necessary to unlock them.

  • Wasn't it like $35 a piece few weeks ago

    • -4

That was for 4K, not 4k max.

      • That was for 4k max, not 4k

        • +2

          I got two 4k max for $69 :)

  • Bought one for parents and was impressed last week so went ahead and purchased the standard one for the bedroom this morning but now that I see this I managed to cancel it and get this one and save some dosh. Cheers

  • This might become their rrp now

    • Unlikely to be RRP but they drop that often that is should just be…

  • +1

I bought this during my recent parental leave. First thing I’ll say is Shield is boss. Depending on your setup I’d also recommend to most, the Apple TV.

Very on the fence with this and the Google TV Chromecast. Google removed the option to have app based screen savers. Might seem a small thing but my parents for example love the Aerial View screen savers. There is a work around but like c’mon really google. Being able to cast obviously is great but with a remote it’s not really needed.

Amazon is hitting the ground running with these! They are on sale constantly. With the exception of not having a Kayo and a Binge app under the hood (but can be sideloaded) they have mostly everything. The above mentioned Screen saver thing can also be sideloaded onto the Firestick.
Downloader and Mixplorer (I only recently found out about this) app are great.

If you want simple go google tv (has all the apps you’d want) if you are happy to sideload (can’t fix the mixplorer logo on Firestick) and a device that is a great price when you can grab it on sale go with this.

My last thought on these is that I believe Amazon is locking down the ability to put a custom launcher that just works. All this don’t update the device is great but there will come a time those models with older firmware are all sold and they will just be sold with current firmware that’s locked. My advice just learn to accept the Firestick Home Screen appearance and be done with it…

I have tried pretty much all the TV boxes under the sun, although it just has the core apps, it’s frigging super fast and one of the easiest single remote solutions. Uses a combination of IR, Bluetooth and HDMI CEC to control the TV, Home Theatre and fire stick from a single remote.
For the more adventurous you can sideload android apps, I loaded the IPTV app, it’s super fast and great for free to air TV.
It’s not for everyone, but damn the speed of this thing!!
The single remote solution is perfect for us older folk.

  • These better than Chromecast with Google TV?
