  • hey guys, anything else USB -C you recommend over this ? Anker etc? tia

    • +3

i would recommend setting a 3camel (au) alert for when anker sound motion + drops to $80 or so again. Banger for the price. Not worth full rrp imo tho

      • awesome, been meaning to check this out for years, do you recommend browser plugin, or making an amazon wishlist to import?

        • +2

i just do it all manual, i use a burner account which forwards to my main email.
just put in what you want, what price you want it at, and it alerts you.

i dont think i'll ever get to the point where i need it to be fully integrated/automated unfortunately haha

JBL has recently released the Flip 6 hence why the Flip 5 is on clearance.

    • +7

      Now with one extra flip.

  • +3

One of these or 99 of these?

  • +1

I like our Flip 5"s… have two & work well

    • +1

I agree. I love my Flip 5, it has been flawless and I love the durability and sound quality.

    • -1

Do you know what codec it's using when used as a stereo pair? I have a pair of older Sony speakers which I like, but they downgrade to SBC when used as a pair, which really sucks. I wouldn't have bought them if I'd known this.

  • Does anyone know if this flip 5 would pair with a flip 4?

    • +3

They changed the pairing protocol apparently, so no.

      • Thanks @munki

    • +1

Just watched a review video and the 5 can't pair with the 4. Also - the flip 5 can pair with the flip 6 but only in party boost sync - NOT in L&R Stereo - for that they have to be the same series….

Good timing. Dog ate my old one…

    • +1

      Big dog?

      • +9

        Nope just a dumb one

    • +1

      JBL must be tasty ;)

  • How would they compare to LG Xboom Go?

  • Anyone using two of those ? How’s the sound?

  • JBL flip 6 are cheaper on ebay? would they be fakes?

    • +2

If the price is too good to be true……

But yes they look dodgey. They might be legit, but being ebay, they probably aren't because ebay doesn't seem to care if people sell fakes.

      • +2

Can confirm the cheap Flip 6's are not legit on ebay. I emailed the seller and asked them and he replied "not real , no brand"

I noticed he had a fair few sales too for it

  • +1

Flip 5 is $100 at TGG commerical as it's sold out In Qld for anyone that's interested

  • Stereo or mono? My old Flip is still stereo.

  • Get flip 4 if you can find, much superior sound than flip 5.

    • +2

      That's not true.

      • +2

        He/She/They isn't wrong actually.

I had owned both speakers for a while. If you prefer more balanced sound then the flip 4 is actually better.

Both speakers were v-shaped and okay for the casual music listening experience outdoors. The flip 4 had 2 smaller drivers compared with the one large "racetrack" driver found on the flip 5. As such, mids and highs were better on the flip 4. The flip 5 has more bass but that's about it for sound at least. Some of the reviews you find online might say the same.

    • Yeah I heard this too, something about the flip 4 being stereo and flip 5 being mono

      • Unless the actual physical speakers are far enough apart or you are using headphones/earbuds, it makes no difference.
When you have a small device like a phone speaker (singular) or Bluetooth speaker, the speakers (plural) cannot be enough apart to decipher the 2 channels from your left to right ears (stereo).
Stereo (2 channels - left and right channels) is perfect in a home cinema, actual cinema, car audio system or speakers at home on either side of the room.
My Bose soundbar is "stereo" but it makes little difference as it's in a speaker (speakers) around 60cm wide (the box) and sits 5 meters away in front of me underneath the TV, has little chance of providing a noticeable left/right channel in this environment.

        • When used under a monitor it is 100% noticeable…..

          • @boxall: Yes just checked. My Flip 4 is stereo. Flip 5 is mono.

          • +1

@boxall: Yes, true, because it's all about the distance between the 2 speakers and how far you are from them (separation of the channels)
If you are using a monitor, you are very close to the screen and the 2 speakers could easily be far enough apart for your ears to hear it.
This is not the case with a portable speaker, because no standard Bluetooth speaker has the 2 speakers far enough apart.

            • @SimAus007: And using the flip 4 to enhance the monitor audio works amazing well. No way would I want a mono speaker there.

              • @boxall: A good sound bar would be better, but yes it would sound ok for Bluetooth (not as good as hard-wired obviously)
Any inbuilt TV or monitor speakers are crap and getting worse as screens become thinner.
Manufacturers are starting to not include speakers in TVs now, which I think will become the norm over time.
I have studio monitors (speakers) on another side of my 32" monitor which is a nice touch also for great sound and true stereo (all hard wired)

        • You've just lost all credibility with your phone statement. My old Samsung S20 Ultra has great stereo separation (using two speakers, not one) when I watch Netflix/YouTube, I can hear action sounds from shows and music separation clearly in stereo.

          • +1

@NoApostrophePlurals: If you have a speaker at EITHER end of your phone and are CLOSE to it, yes the same theory applies.

PS: I am an audio engineer, but what you have said is correct if the above is the case, but that isn't true with 99% of phones (ie you need to be very close the the phone (most people are) and speakers need to be at either end of the phone (landscape mode).

Again, the same theory as a monitor, it's about the distance between the 2 speakers and their separation from your ears.

Back to the posted topic, no standard Bluetooth speaker does this, unless you are a mouse sitting in the centre of the Bluetooth speaker (speakers).

            • @SimAus007: I don't mean to be pedantic and I'll agree with majority of what you said, but most phones these days will operate in stereo mode with the loudspeaker and call speaker when in landscape mode. Most being basically any Samsung and iPhone of the last few years and many others. I don't know how you think these phones fall outside of your 99% of phones in existence. Maybe you know audio, but you don't seem to know phones.

PS: I used to sell phones for a living (though a long time ago, kind of irrelevant)

  • Which one is better, flip 5 or UE Boom?

    • +1

I've got the boom and my partner has the flip 5. Boom sound slightly better, and has longer battery life but not enough for paying the extra 70-100 extra for it imo.

      • +1

I have a UE boom and I find it annoying that the battery drains when it isn't in use. They added a function where you can remotely turn it on using your phone while the speaker is off so it always sits idle, I can't figure out how to turn it off entirely.

        • +1

Yeah that's fair. I've never personally noticed it, but I use mine 1-3 hours a day. So probably isn't draining enough outside of that for me to notice, I probably put it on charge every 2 weeks- on the little charging plate.

          • @ONEMariachi: Makes sense. If you're constantly using and charging it then you wouldn't notice. I use mine probably once every 2-3 months for a couple hours each time, it pretty much dies every time and I need to remember to charge it if I know I'm going to use it.

        • There is a way to fully turn it off.

Hold volume down + power for ~20secs until it makes a noise and turns off. That seems to do a "hard power off" and then remote power seems to be disabled.

I think this is basically a "hard reset" of the speaker, but you can do this if you know you will not be using the speaker for an extended period.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Would you need to re-pair your devices every time you do that? If it still remembers everything then that'd be a life saver

            • @gettem: I think you do need to repair after a hard reset. But try uninstalling the UE App before you repair. Maybe it will detect that you don't have the App installed and the speaker will not go into "Low power mode" where the App can wake it while it's off. And then it might? reduce the battery drain when off.

I am not too sure about the "uninstalling App" effect, so you will have to do some trial and error and see how it affects long term battery drain.
If it doesn't improve at all, maybe repairing after a long duration of not using the speaker is a worthwhile compromise to not killing the battery.

  • +1

My house mate has the small-ish JBL. Its smaller than my UE megaboom anyway and I may be wrong but it honestly feels louder. dunno. If I was going to buy another one id go the JBL over UE again

    • +3

Make sure to get your models right as there are a few. Sounds to me like you are thinking of the JBL Charge 4/5 as they are loud and louder/better than the flip series.

  • +1

Why are JBL Charge 4 and Flip 4, more expensive and higher reviewed than their newer models in the JBL Charge 5 and Flip 5 ?
Can anybody shine a light on this ??…

  • Any feedback on how the (newer) JBL Flips compare to the Bose Mini Soundlink II SE? Thinking of buying from Costco ($200) as I listened to a friend's Bose and was quite impressed with it compared to my JBL Flip 3.

  • How does it compare to the UE Wonderboom 2?

  • I got the JBL Charge 5 around the same time as the Amazon "Prime Day" ironically I got it (from BIG W of all places) cheaper than what the Flip was being sold for at the time ($162). I was telling a friend today that I was in the market for a bluetooth speaker as my latest must have gadget. I started off with a small one (that was like a mini speaker, alarm clock and intercom/phone in one), then I started looking at larger speakers and the JBL caught my eye. I was close to buying the Flip version, but I figured it was worth spending the money on the different model (differences were minute but I settled on the next model up I guess).

  • Damn out of stock everywhere?

  • If you have access to good guys commercial, the JBL Charge 5 is only $134

    • I tried to order that 10 days ago, and then called up yesterday there was no stock in the whole of Australia ready for delivery and no delivery date.. JBL website says expected delivery is December for their stock, so I don't think it'll be in stock for ages.
