        Or a chopper phone

  • Is this good upgrade to LG V30+? Or any suggestion below A$500
    Thanks

Do you take advantage of the Hi-Fi Quad DAC?

    • +2

You'd be downgrading in CPU eg https://nanoreview.net/en/soc-compare/qualcomm-snapdragon-83… and functionality (losing dac, wireless charging…). Just getting a later android version.

I was a V20 user, recently picked up a V40 on ebay for $230. It's awesome (flashed to A10). And LG's migration app worked really well.

If you like your LG, I'd personally try to get a V50 cheap if you can find one. Supports A12.

How's this compare to Samsung a20? My old man has one and it is SLOW. Drives me nuts trying to help him on it

    • +4

I have the a32, I've traded it in for the pixel 6a.
Overall I wouldn't call it slow, but there's a few things that made me dislike the overall user experience

      • Slow google assistant
      • Google assistant won't control timer app
      • When browsing on chrome the screen doesn't scroll smoothly, it's janky
      • Camera is just okay
      • Samsung bloatware which I can't delete

Not sure why you were negged.

This uses a "Virtual proximity sensor" rather than a hardware one.

Not heard good things about virtual ones.

    • +1

I have a phone(S20FE) with a virtual proximity sensor. For short calls, it has been fine. The times I have had longer calls, it has been a bit of a pain with the screen turning on and buttons pressed. Obviously, YMMV.

I generally use it with earphones anyway, so it's not a deal breaker for me.

  • Was hoping to get the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G for $249 but obviously Telstra made an error there.
So got 2 x A32 instead. One for my aunty and 1 as a backup phone. She is moving from a S6 edge and seems pretty happy.

So I called my local OW this morning, ask them to hold 1 for me, and when I go there to collect around lunchtime, only to found that they sold mine and nothing has left…πŸ˜”πŸ˜”πŸ˜”

Buy online from either Officeworks or JB

  • Made an online order last night.
I'm wondering if they have warehouse stock or simply selling retail floor stock.
Feels like they might cancel the online order given floor stock is gone.

    • Ordered last night too around 1am, from this morning untill 7pm today when i checked the order it is always show "Status:Shipped" but when i click into detail it's still show "Preparing your order" but now 8pm it has the update "On the way" and they link it to Toll tracking number website and Estimated delivery on Friday, 5th of August, 2022 , between 8am - 5pm. I just want to make sure the order is ok and not cancel so i can make order for a case and some screen protector :D

  • How good is the camera?

Is it good enough to be used as your only camera when traveling?

  • I have a Nokia 8 with a bad battery (quoted $80-$100) to change it. Would this phone be as good or better?

I also have a 256Gb micro memory card in the Nokia 8 that I want to also use, would it work on this phone too?

    • +1

Sure. Cheap replacement and much more up to date with latest Android 12 Ui4.1 and big battery, oh,……also nice Super

Amoled screen. So,…..did you end up getting one?

      • +2

@ozhunter68 Thanks so much for your reply, that is great to know, sounds like it would have been a big step up over the Nokia 8!

        Haha, well…let me tell you a story…

What ended up happening was that the OfficeWorks deal could not be had anymore, so I turned to JBHiFi in the hopes that I could get them to send one to my store (Wollongong) which never seems to have any stock of anything I'm after, especially Oz B deals! But as I was trying to do this first thing in the morning (Yesterday) I was put on an endless loop of holding for over 10 minutes and kept being asked every 2 minutes in a not very friendly way "Who are you holding for?" by 3 different people from the store, never getting through to the phone department.

So I took it as a sign that this might not be the best route to take and ended up going down a rabbit hole for many hours learning about the many different alternatives that would offer me a good deal for a similar (or maybe a bit more) price. Comparing mobile phones these dasy is not much fun, even with the awesome power of the internet! Mostly cause detailed and correct information is hard to find especially when different versions of the same phone are being sold online but are made for different regions (China, India, Global etc) and the differences are not very obvious but can really make a difference.

I was focusing a lot on the Xaiomi Redmi Note 10, but there is also the Note 10S, Note 10 Pro and just plane Redmi 10 and then a China version of the Pro as well and all of them within price range of one another (plus some older Note 9s were in the mix) and it was pretty darn confusing.

But after many videos and websites later, I concluded it was worth spending more than I had initially planned (as this was only meant to replace a phone I can basically not even go out of the house with the battery is so bad) and went for the Xaiomi Redmi Note 10 Pro from AliExpress. I went for the 8Gb version (128Gb storage) and made sure to get the SnapDragon 732 Chipset, because the Dimensity 1100 chipset (Chinese version also found all over AliExpress) has some not very apparent differences, the most important one being NO MEMORY CARD STORAGE! I came close to buying that one by mistake, so glad I kept double checking everything like a "mad internet searcher monkey" I had become by that stage.

It was $370 including delivery (start of September expected to arrive) but I figured this was still a good choice because, I was told that my phone has a bonded screen that will likely be cracked while changing battery which would put the price up to $230, just to have an old phone working again.

Cheapest price in Australia for the 8Gb version of the Note 10 Pro is $100 more, so I think I did alright especially since this phone is being spruked as such a good one by virtually everyone on the internet (most saying it's the best value phone of 2021 and great all-rounder) and I figured I may as well have one with a camera I actually like because I will probably be using for another 5 years like the Nokia 8 was for me.

I would also say for anyone else who might be reading this and is still looking for a good phone at around $300 or less, that there are also heaps of the 6Gb/128Gb or 6Gb/64Gb versions on Ali express for between $50-$100 cheaper than my version and you can just add a cheap memory card to have tones of storage. You'll end up with something that according to my research is much better than the phone in this deal (which sadly is not available now anyway) for not that much more money.

Main things being, much better camera, Much brighter 120Hz screen (can be set to 60hz for battery saving) and significantly faster chipset performance too, plus much faster charging. I hope this helps someone out there who needed/wanted a new phone in this similar price range but could no longer get this deal and like me only looks at phone specs every few years and is easily overwhelmed by it all. Comparison of specs between the 2 here: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10753&idPhone…

Thanks again for your help ozhunter, really appreciate your reply and interest, sorry for my much too long reply! πŸ˜…I hope you have a great day πŸ˜ƒ Cheers πŸ‘

For those still interested they still have the 6Gb/128Gb version available where I got mine for about $320, link below (I think about 25-$30 tax on checkout) I hope it helps ! But also many other vendors selling this phone on AliExpress plus other good cheap phones too!

Wow, what a long, but good detailed reply. You made a good choice, as long as you are happy waiting for a while and don't care too much about OS warranty, then the RN10 Pro is a top choice. I have a cheaper RN10 4g (really wanted the Pro but no deals at the time), and even happy with that too.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: Haha, I'm glad you managed to read it, thankyou for your kind words :) I think you are right, the Note 10 Pro seems like one of the best I could have chosen in this price range, I hope all goes well and I won't ever need to send back for warranty and that it will arrive within estimated time. How much was the Redmi Note 10, did you get a good price? Yes, main thing is you are happy with it, I imagine that there are not that many differences to the Pro version and must be a good phone as they seem to have really done well with this phone range. In fact the 10 series is still better than this years 11 series IMO, due to some changes they made for the worse.
