Braaap Motorcycles Has a Revolutionary Electric Motorbike

Does anyone know about Braaap Motorcycles? They have an electric motorbike starting at less than $5000. I believe it has a top speed of more than 100 km an hour and a range of somewhere around 100 km.

Sounds pretty competitive considering you can pay much more for an electric bicycle.

They are made in Melbourne.

I always hear bikes with loud exhausts and thought part of this is so people with cars can know a rider is near them. Would an EV bike cause more accidents as people can’t hear them?

Granted, people should drive properly but we all know the reality is people don’t do hear checks properly.

The loud exhaust thing is absolute rubbish made up by middle aged men with Harley's.

I have a 900cc twin motorbike and you aren't hearing that unless I'm right next to you with all the sound proofing in cars now.

If you need to rely on being heard rather than been seen then you're not riding defensively

    • You should see a bike long before you hear it…

I like Braaap and think that he is giving it a red hot go… But why in the hell does this post read like spam??

    They are made in Melbourne.

This is incorrect. They are "made" in China, shipped over here and assembly is completed here in Australia. You can literally pick up these bikes on Aliexpress/Alibaba.

And a note on my experiences of owning electric motorcycles/scooters, there is no way that the 5kw bike is going to do over 100 with a 72v motor/battery. Also, there is no way that they are going to get over 100km out of an 80Ah pack on a bike that size.

One of my electric bikes is 72v/4kW motor and a 60Ah battery and it gets to about 70~ish km/h and has a range around town (50km/h zones) of about 40 to 50km. I also highly doubt that the 10kW bike would fair any better. It may accelerate a bit faster than the 5kW version and may go around 100+km on a charge with the help of its 160Ah battery, but I still think these claims are a little "theoretical" more so than "actual".

And if you want a real (or more) real world review of this bike, Temp. Citizen has a review as well. (Although I think he is a bit of a Braaap fanboi)

Did you edit while I was typing?

Good to see we both challenged the "made in" claim either way.👍

Yes. This post is very spammy.

Was looking for the link to the same bike… ended up finding it

        • Nice job.

Now I've just been told that Brad was doing the dodgy several years back. Shame shame shame.

          • @Muzeeb: Yeah, they copped a fine a few years ago for importing bike that had approval, but from what I understand, the compliance plates did not match the configuration of the bikes. I think they had one bike for testing and compliance and then changed parts out on the manufacturing configuration on the imported customer bikes. I think it was things like headlights, indicators and brakes and it was only on about 80ish bikes that were imported.

  • My son wanted a braap dirt bike about 12 years ago but they were just Chinese made bikes with no real longevity data available. We just stuck to Kawasaki (KX85) and Yamaha (yz125).

    They are made in Melbourne

    Really?

Not sure if Brad Smith is still the owner but he had admirable ambitions 15 years ago.

    They are made in Melbourne.

The main and most important components like the engine are made in China. It's assembled in Melbourne. Pretty sure you can get these on Alibaba. Would you get one off Alibaba? No? Then why buy one at five times as much from these guys

Braap was in a lot of trouble a few years ago for selling rebirthed motorbikes so I wouldn't go near them.

I'm guessing the batteries are going to be low quality too.

Holy shit. Just googled Brad's name. That's not good. Last I read of him was in Australasian Dirt Bike at least 10 years ago.

      • They shop was in Frankstanistan (frankston) after all

        • +5

Is that like the bomb police discovered near the library in Frankston?

The locals were shocked. They didn't realise there was a library in Frankston.

  • 50/100mtrs from the library….

WOW - i just also googled Brad Smith's name also, particularly in reference to Launceston Magsitrates' Court.

Convicted of rebirthing, handling stolen goods, tampering and other offences….. Sorry, but no. I'll spend my money with a decent company…. Also found an article that Braaap went into liquidation….. but it's been re-born??? seems to be a common thread with this bloke.

Geez guys, didn't realise how dodgy he is. I wonder how guys like that can keep going?

  • +4

‘we’ll save you so much because we don’t offer test rides’ is another way of saying we don’t think you’ll want to buy one after a test ride.

    • LOL as if this is even a cost saving. What a completely transparent attempt at getting suckers in

  • I cant wait for the Wuling electric car to be sold here in Australia

  • I own a light bee x (registered) - https://www.surronaustralia.com.au/

it doesn't go as far (60km) or as fast (80kph), but would recommend it any day of the week

  • can hub motors even make that sort of power?

    • +1

That story makes them sound somewhere between incompetent and impatient rather than deceptive. Seems they didn’t wait for final approval on some bikes and another batch had a (legal) modifications that didn’t match the original compliance.
