PC Speaker Recommendations - Mine Just Blew up! - Cant deal with the silence.

So my Fluid Audio C5's just blew up.

Fluid said things like "capacitor and zenar diode" and told me how it was an easy fix….which I just agreed with and immediately started looking for new speakers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something of similar or better quality sound.

Probably cant go bigger than 5" with desk space and even the Rokit 5's look a little too large.

Trying not to spend too much money so was thinking maybe the Edifier MR4's but Amazon reviews can be deceiving.

Top Budget of lets say $350-400 but less is best.

Throw me your suggestions.

For $244 these Aktimate Micro's are decent. 5 star rating on What Hifi. They're on pretty heavy discount as I'm pretty sure they were discontinued a while ago (I think the company might have stopped making speakers?). I've been happily using the Minis, which are the size up, as my living room speakers for the last 8 years.

I used to use the Minis as well, they can go pretty loud.

Ive had aktimate speakers since 2012, and they still sound as amazing today as they did back then. +1 for aktimate.

probably why they are out of business now.

A budget option would be the Creative Pebble speakers for $25~$35 brand new. They do just fine for most content such as youtube and occasional music.

Last time I checked they were $29 I think from JB HiFi portal.

      • That's still $19 more expensive than the garage sale speakers which also handle YouTube and music just fine.

Uh I did mention they were brand new. Garage sale speakers are obviously used, and you have to find them? They aren't just for sale everywhere like JB HiFi.

I was supporting your comment by the way, saying cheap speakers can do the job just fine.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Exactly, they're cheaper.

You're right, you do have to go out of your way to find them, but the savings make it worth it. I actually quite like going to the Saturday garage sales.

            • @ParmiAndChips: Yeah it depends how much you value your time. Time spent looking also has a value, so does petrol costs to get somewhere, public transport costs etc, add those up depending how many "weekends" it takes you to find those speakers. Which is why so many people come to ozbargain to try to find cheap deals while also doing their best to "reduce the amount of time spent looking".

If you could buy better quality and brand new speakers for only $19 more and could pick them up tomorrow that might be worth it to some people.

Not saying you are wrong by the way. Just saying there are different perspectives other people have regarding overall "value", it's not just the price on the ticket.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: To be fair, unless you've got work then, what else are you really going to be doing on a Saturday morning? Also, you don't need to be going around just looking for speakers. You could get all your other computer gear, furniture, fishing gear and all the rest while you're out.

                • @ParmiAndChips: "you don't need to be going around just looking for speakers. You could get all your other computer gear, furniture, fishing gear and all the rest while you're out."

Good point. But the user who posted is specifically asking for "recommendations". So in your original post you were hinting that they go look for $10 used speakers and "just that" because it was cheaper.

Well not much point continuing this discussion because you are talking to a person who decided having "audio" was not required for a computer. When my speakers broke I just didn't buy anything to replace them, $0 lol.

  • If you have something like a decent portable speaker, you can just audio jack it in.

I've done that with my JBL xtreme to my PC.

    • Partner has these, and while they are alright for a basic setup - Probably want something a bit more

      • the T-series ones are a bit beefier - the T40s go pretty hard

  • I cannot vouch for them personally but I see a lot of recommendations for the Presonus Eris range when it comes to relatively cheap powered speakers. The E3.5 and E4.5 can both be found locally for example, and may well suit your needs.

I recently upgraded to a set of Dali Spektor 1s for desktop use and am loving them, but they're not powered so you'd need a DAC and Amp.

Bass isn't as good on the Edifers, I get the feeling a lot of the rave reviews are from people moving from cheap USB speakers to "real" ones. Edifers are amazing value for money though, no doubt about it and they're priced well in Australia too. But coming from the C5s it won't be as good on the bass.

Maybe the R1700s would be a better choice? Supposedly more of a V shape to the sound, although I've never used them.

    • Yeah this has been my concern because the bass on the C5's whilst not terrible isnt the best - I think with not working from home as much lately being forced to return to the ofifce I'm finding it harder to justify the price of something like the KRK's just from a hours used case

  • I just went with the MR4's. For $140 it was hard to justify the 300 dollar price tag of the Presonus.

I just pull out my tablet and open it on that when I need to listen to something.

  • Surely headphones would give you superior sound. Plus not upset your neighbours and the other people in the house.

    • Yeah I've got headphones but I can't wear them all day.

Also….screw my neighbours they deserve some payback from me lol

  • I have these

Second set after the first ones died (10 odd years old). I like having a headphone out at the front. I also have a tiny desk and can't have fat speakers

  • I'm using JBL 104BT and they're decent for the money with a good DAC source. I think they go on sale for 250 at Amazon.

I also have a prestine Z5500 set boxed in the cupboard, but that's another story for 2022 👊🏼

  • I have these for over 4 years now and haven't looked back.

They are loud, clear and the bass is deep. If my current set ever breaks I would buy this one again in a heartbeat.
