I received an email from Nikon saying they have a deal at the moment where you can get a bonus 28mm f/2.8 lens with the purchase of a Nikon Z5, Z6 II or Z7 II from a Nikon Australia Authorised Reseller https://www.nikon.com.au/bonus28mm and I also noticed that the Nikon Z5 is on sale on the Nikon Australia Amazon store for $1798 right now, and seems to be eligible for this bonus.

The Z6 II and Z7 II also seem to be on sale right now, but the Z5 + this lens seemed like the best value to me.

I'm not sure how long the camera will be on sale on Amazon for, but the bonus redemption deal is only eligible for purchases made before September 7 and has to be redeemed before October 31.

Seems like a really good deal to me, I bought a used Z5 and a new copy of this lens a while ago, and it worked out to about the same as this deal for a brand new copy. If I didn't already have one, I'd personally be jumping on this, so thought I'd share it to the OzB community in case someone else is interested in buying a new full-frame mirrorless camera.

Edit: see comments for discussion about whether the DigiDirect Ebay store is also eligible for this bonus. If so, it would be a better deal.

  • Thanks for posting. What are the Canon and Sony equivalents to the Nikon Z5? I am trying to do a bit of research, but there are soo many models.

    • +1

Canon RP. Sony does not have equivalence in this category. Their business model was to keep the older model as entry level in this price bracket. In that case it used to be the A7 II until the global chips shortage so they stopped the less profitable lines. Z5 would be the better one.

      • +1

I believe the Canon RP does not have IBIS, though, which the Z5 does have.

    • +1

I think on the Sony side, maybe the A7 III is their entry level full frame? It's a bit more expensive than this, though.

Canon has the RP, but it lacks IBIS which the Z5 has.

Alternately, if you don't need something with the most modern features and are willing to sacrifice some size and weight you could consider buying a used DSLR like a Nikon D800 or Canon 5D MkII or MkIII — they're very good value used imho, but they're much heavier than the modern mirrorless cameras.

Cheaper with Digidirect 20% off. Under $1.5k:

    • damn, that is a good price. It looks like DigiDirect is also on the list of authorised resellers for the bonus as well https://www.nikon.com.au/authorised-resellers though I do wonder if the eBay store would count?

      • +1

Yes because you would get the digidirect store tax invoice to claim redemption. The factory promotion where they supply the bonus lens from the store at time of purchase, such as the current R5 and R6 Bonus lens however, don’t qualify. Speaking from experience.

Messaged digidirect ebay this arvo and was told

        "Hi there ,

Upon checking yes , we are authorized reseller for Nikon items however the bonus lens are for orders placed using our website only . Thank you

        Kind regards
        Jaya"

        • Thanks for checking this!

        • That's interesting because direct factory redemption is separate, they don't care as long as one submit the store receipt. May be this Jaya got confused with the R5/6 deal where the store have to supply the bonus lens together with the camera? I previously got an VISA redemption from Olympus after buying from DD eBay store.

@Buy2Much: I have checked with a rep in melbourne store yesterday and he confirmed ebay purchase will be eligible.

            • @netbirds82: I ordered the Z5 and a 50mm prime lens from Digidirect eBay last week and it still hasn't been sent. Today is the last day for the Nikon bonus lens promotion, so I am not sure if I will be eligable. Did anyone else manage to sort this out?

              • @trippy: You can redeem until 31 Oct 2022. If your invoice got the order date with in stated period then should be eligible.

                https://www.nikon.com.au/bonus-28mm-lens-terms-conditions

                "Promotional Period

Offer valid on qualifying purchases made between 25.08.22 and until 07.09.22 from any Nikon Authorized Reseller.
Bonus items must be redeemed before October 31st 2022."

                • @netbirds82: After several messages they now sent the camera this morning with an invoice dated 8th September, which is one day after the bonus lens offer period ended. I purchased this on 30th of August. Could this be intentional? Does Digidirect have any expenses associated with Nikon's bonus lens offer?

                  • @trippy: This is what I found under terms & conditions.

"To qualify for Reward, Participants must have purchased a qualifying product in full within the promotional period from a Nikon Authorised Reseller. Reward redemptions will be supplied by the Nikon Authorised reseller, providing the qualifying product was purchased within the promotional period."

                    • @netbirds82: I contacted Nikon directly and they processed my bonus lens claim when I gave them the ebay receipt together with the Digidirect invoice. The 28mm lens arrived a week or so later. The image quality of the lens is pretty average compared to the 50mm 1.8 S lens, so I don't see myself using it very much.

  • So the free lens is a Nikkor (not Nikon). Is it any good?

    • +3

same thing, Nikkor is the name Nikon use for their lenses.

I have a copy of the lens, it's not as good as their f/1.8 S line prime lenses, but it's a very nice little compact prime. Good balance between size and image quality imo.

    • +2

Nikon always brand their lenses with the 'Nikkor' label. The lens is great and worth about $350 if bought separately.

  • +1

Thanks for the good information in this thread everyone. I just ordered the Z5 and the 50mm 1.8 S prime lens from Digidirect. Can someone suggest an everyday lens filter? I ordered a Hoya UV filter for now, just to protect the lens.

    • +1

I would normally have the hood on to protect the lens, that's good enough. If you do get a UV filter, you would have to get a high quality glass with multicoat to minimise reflection/refraction, and that's not cheap.
