[PC, GOG] 85% off F.E.A.R. Platinum Edition (Includes F.E.A.R. Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate) $2.19 @ GOG

760

So you get the original game and the two expansion DLC's, a lot of content there and it's a very unique and cool FPS! A true classic with some of the best gun play and A.I. to date. Plus really spooky atmosphere and a bit of horror thrown in makes it a quite intense experience. I really dig this one and it's an absolute bargain for 2 bucks!

"Humble Bundle is two cents cheaper. TWO CENTS!!!" Plus you get the Steam key for those who would prefer (Thanks Cheap Gamer and Agret)

17 Years old now, but I still think it's better than a lot of newer games and definitely offers something that feels different to the often homogenized modern FPS experience.

Can be modded to make it look a lot more like a modern game too, some have even added ray-tracing if you have a card that supports it, looks pretty good:

    Damn what a classic

    • +2

Sure is! It's a shame they don't sell it separately on Steam anymore (only in the big bundle) but even still, I think the bundle is only about 10-15 dollars when on sale.

        Steam key from Humble too.

        • Sweet deal if you get Steam key too!, I will post that link in the OP

I hate ladders thanks to this game.

    Alma

  • +4

Classic. I replay this game every couple of years.

    • +10

You know a game is something very special when you just keep playing it for years.

I also have a similar relationship with Max Payne 3, Hitman: Absolution and also Jedi Knight Outcast, TRON 2.0 and Thief II, oh and of course the masterpiece that is Return to Castle Wolfenstein! Quite a few others as well, because just like a classic movie you can play them again and again because they are just so epic and still have not been topped.

      • +7

Absolutely, man. I'd rate it up there with one of my favourite all time FPS titles. Peeking over corners, bullet time mechanics, extensive weaponry arsenal, advanced enemy AI, awesome melee attacks… For a 2005 game! Nothing more satisfying than using the needler to target limbs and make a human pincushion 🙂

I used to play wolfenstein on DOS 286 lmao! It was soooo blocky and square

          • +1

@teddiebear: Great game though, especially at the time, it was revolutionary !

            • +1

@wonderboy4: It truly was! No game was as voilant, so 'real' lol. Totally kicked butt!

          • +2

@teddiebear: Wolfenstein was my earliest FPS gaming memory, on a 386. PC speaker for sound fx made it very creepy. Still my all time favourite but I don't play it much anymore.

            • +1

@Windows7forever: The modded version of original Wolfenstein really enhances things and makes it more fun these days too. Same with modded Doom, still great games today especially if modded

            • @Windows7forever: In the original, i still remember the cheat/code for all weapons, infinite buĺlets and full health…. ILM pressed at the same time.
The boss dude at the end before the tunnel, took nearly everything you had! Ohhh the corny sound fx, blocky figure, brings back many good memories lol

  • +7

Oh the multiplayer was so fun in its hayday. You would go around kung fuing people in the head.

    • +1

Sounds like a blast 😂 I never did the multiplayer but I read somewhere recently that somehow folks have revived this aspect of the game.

    • +2

Yes. The insta kill melee was fun and OP lol.

  • +1

can't believe this is 17 yrs old great in its day but I've moved on

    • +3

yeah, quite a ways back now but I still think it holds up today, especially with the Hi-Res texture packs. I even saw the developer talking about how the A.I. was very advanced at the time and even now it's on a level that surpasses most FPS.

      • you are probably right but having played it to death you kinda remember where x is going to happen and Alma is going to pop up etc then you have to spend time adding texture packs etc

        • +2

oh yeah, I know what you mean. Sounds like you had a lot of fun with this one back in the day! I only played through it once maybe twice and I'm not sure how much of the DLC I did yet. So I'm keen to have another go and check out a couple mods too.

I'll chuck it in the OP too

Remember the creepy FEAR 3 collectors edition? The 7" figurine is a naked Alma with demon fetus that glows in the dark. Yep, that was on the shelf in every game store. LOL

    • Prettyyyyy sure I still have this somewhere. Lol

    • +1

I still have this in my drawer, freaks me out every time I’m going through it

I used to use Russia GOG to for pricing, looks like Chile might be a good replacement.

This game doesn't age, it was very good when it came out.

    • +2

You need a VPN to get the cheaper codes sold on those sites? Is it a big price difference usually?

      • +2

Yes, I use the VPN Unlimited deal, but you also need to clear the cache for gog.com in your browser and log in with the VPN on for the region to stay changed throughout checkout.

I have bought dozens of games via Russia on my Australian GOG account over the last couple years. They are region free and downloadable on my AU login client.

        • +2

Thankyou! And for explaining details too👍 I'm guessing you can save a pretty penny this way 😃

I wonder if something like this can work for Steam?

          • +2

@wonderboy4: I wouldn't consider doing that with Steam, don't mess with regional VPNs with your Steam account.

GOG is a completely different story with using VPNs. With Steam you can buy region free keys via third party websites, almost all accept PayPal. I have mainly been using Eneba, which is good at making it clear if the Steam key is usable on an Australian Steam account.

You can find more grey keysite options via a website called AllKeyShop.

For Xbox, I buy Xbox Argentina game keys from Eneba, but activate via redeem.microsoft.com with a VPN. That one is painful and slow, takes many attempts before it gets through.

            • +2

@Jimbuscus: Thanks for the tip in regards to Steam, I just thought maybe could gift them to myself somehow. But yeah wouldn't want to have any issues with my account.

Great to know it works with GOG, I've noticed on some price history websites that other countries get some crazy low prices sometimes, so this could be handy, cheers.

Yeah, I have gotten many keys from Eneba and never had a problem. Yeah their site is really easy to use, much better than some others, I always prefer to use them if I can.

I don't have Xbox but it's good to know that there is a way to do cheaper keys for it.

              • +2

@wonderboy4: You can't gift from a Steam region, to a cheaper region, also buying between multiple Steam accounts is a ban risk.

There are plenty better prices from keysites, it's not worth messing with Steam directly.

                • +1

@Jimbuscus: Yep, doesnt sound viable at all, thanks for clarifying. Great thing we have the key sites!

  • This is just one of 2700+ games discounted up to -93% off, in the ongoing 'The GOG Sale' promo event that was posted over a week ago

e.g. you could find F.E.A.R. Platinum listed near the top under The GOG Sale > Bestsellers collection

  • I played fear 1-3 without the nostalgia (maybe 6 or 7 years ago) and thought it was just passable. Expectations too high i think.

    • +1

Only the first one is excellent, 2-3 weren’t good at all

      • Agreed. Fear 2 and 3 were competent shooters but 1 is superior.

  • +1

I played F.E.A.R. with 7.1 EAX HD sound back in '05. Gun battles were intense and the rest of the game felt so eerie.

    • 7.1! That sounds epic, great sound really elevates a game to new levels

  • +1

    Never played it, worth getting?
    Hd Texture packs work well?

    • Definitely try it if you like single player FPS

      • Not sure how it would look on a 4k monitor though
Suppose is cheap enough to try

  • +1

One of the greatest fps games ever - close combat in office spaces is sensational.

This game has aged extremely well and its replayability is definitely there.

    Here's a plus 👍

    • +1

Totally agree! Its still a great game and really stands out. Definitely should be on the list of greatest ever

  • +1

I tried playing F.E.A.R. again last year on my 4K monitor. It would run well to begin with but then the fps get increasingly choppy the longer I played. I would have to quit the game and restart it to get it back to being smooth.

    A memory leak maybe?

  • Member playing this. Scared the crap out of me

    • Yeah its good at doing that !
