  • What's everyone getting read and write speed shucked on Synology (not usb)?

    • Depends on your configuration and nas itself.

Mine is DS1819+ with 8 drive in RAID6 (no SHR) getting around 450MB/s on HDD only or ~800MB/s on SSD cache.

Can’t tell the speed for one drive. But if I recall correctly, when directly connect to SATA it can go 200+ on peak.

I paid $384 for my last 18TB back in July.

It runs at 7200rpm, which was nice.

    • Are you sure? Those white labelled drives doesn’t go 7.2k, but rather enterprise drives with lower rpm and a different model number and firmware.

Unless the information is being reported incorrectly.

I've confirmed using the WD Dashboard app and Hard Disk Sentinel.

        • So does smartmontools, they also report 7.2k

I saw those theories online that those drives are having lower rpm compared to its enterprise counterparts. Also it is indeed run cooler than my other 7.2k drives so I believe in those theories.

          • @xmagic: Then why doesn't it say my 14TB one is running at 7.2k?

That's also an enterprise drive that's been down-specced.

I'm not sure what your 7.2k drives are, but this 18TBs max temp(over lifespan) and average/maximum temps in the last 24hrs are in between my two 7200 rpm WD Black Drives.

Issue with 7200 in a nas is the heat of the drives and they can wear out quickly

What are people doing to protect themselves against data loss on a 16TB drive?
Do you guys just get two and have one backing up to the other?

    • +3

I keep one at another location and sync them every once in a while, so any loss would be minimal.

One of the biggest problems with a NAS, is a criminal can just walk out with ALL your data.

Off site or its gone. Personally not a fan of cloud backup but that's just me.

  • What's a decent Nas which can also host Plex with transcoding capability and maybe sonar / radar support?
