ING 5 Transactions Minimum Workaround

Hello everyone

In months gone past, I have used Beem It to do my five transactions per month by verifying my card as it did two transactions everytime. That loophole is now closed, does anyone have any suggestions? I know about doing 5x1c transactions at Woolies/Coles, but anything to not get out of the house is always appreciated. Are there other apps that do card verification?

I know about doing 5x1c transactions at Woolies/Coles

If you're doing obvious workarounds, they might send you a letter to say they're shutting your account (like other people have received).

    • I've been doing several 1c transactions on my ING card for well over a year now. No problems so far. I don't do them all at once, and I do have a couple of legitimate transactions per month too. I do transfer a fair bit of money through the account as well.

If ING want to boot me off their platform after over 20 years, it's not going to be my loss.

      • I remember seeing a couple of posts here about these letters because these transactions were 'not in the spirit of the offer'. In other words, they've picked up on people abusing the offer.

It's not possible to just make 5 actual transactions? My main account is with another bank for reasons, but I just make sure I do 5 purchases with the ING card each month. Sometimes I get it done in one day.

I use it whenever I buy coffee, lunch, milk, etc. I'm not too fussed about losing the 4 points or whatever I'd otherwise get on my credit card.

If it's under $20, ING. If it's over, credit card, simple.

    • I’m gonn have this problem soon 😅 going overseas for a few months but need to keep making transactions. There’s only so many AUD bills I pay monthly

Send your card to me and I'll buy a few coffees :P

Virgin Money saving account is better now.

5 transactions includes BPay. If you are young enough, nothing/less needs to be done for the bonus rate.

  • Pay for 1 min of street parking 5 times.

  • +3

Split the water bill. Electric bill.

  • And ideally an automated one that can be set and forget.

I use PayPal. 5x1c payments to another PayPal account. Have been doing this for over 12 months for ING. And MyState, Virgin, and Bank of Queensland for several months when their rates are competitive. I am also trying to do some other random transactions/transfers with ING so they do not close my account.

    • When you do this, does it cost 1c as well to do the transaction or is there a workaround to this?

      • -2

no, you will have to pay the fee if paying from card

      • There are 2 ways of doing this. If you send it to a friend, yes but I use Paying for an item or service, and no charge for this.

Considering how ING has zero hesitation in closing accounts without reason, my advice is to proceed with "workarounds" at your own risk.

  • Buy minimum $ amount amazon gift cards. If you use Zip, 5x$1 payments to balance.

  • afterpay two doordash deliveries - that gives 8 possible debits where 3 out of the 8 could be debited the following month.

  • Buy 5 tuna can in 5 separate transactions. Or 5 avocados.

      Or 5 grapes

      • -1

        Or 5 sesame seeds

ohh that'd be free, I guess

  • Are there other apps that do card verification?

I'm not a Beem or ING customer, but if I understand correctly, Beem used to put in a small temporary charge on the ING card when you added it to the Beem app, for verification purposes ? And you're looking for some other app that puts in a similar temporary charge for verifying cards ?

If so, then you could use Paypal, because after adding a card then you can then "confirm" it to remove spending limits, which involves Paypal putting in a $2 charge to your card, which is then refunded after you confirm it.

just use Zip/bundl/afterpay to pay for stuff.
and then pay that balance in multiple $1 transactions using your ING card.

It's just so much effort to buy 5 items a month. /sarcasm

    • That wasn't the issue.
It was the growth + the spend

  • just buy an apple once every 5 days or so
    good to leave the house

  • Buy random $1 items off AliExpress. Xmas presents sorted.

Otherwise I sometimes buy $3-$5 lotto tickets just for the kick.

ING are fairly average now. Just swap to something better like Up Bank.

  • Easy to follow the Rules and the spirit of the Rules. Ing rewards savers with a good rate and the conditions are fair.

I believe we all deserve much better savings interest rates with less conditions to earn a decent rate and the bonus rate, but it is what it is.

Ing has some of the best and easiest high interest rates to earn, so just accept it or go elsewhere…that is your choice to shop around and move or stay.

But why try to circumvent their conditions? Eventually the cheaters will possibly ruin it for the rest of us doing the right(read - fair thing).

    • +2

their conditions are 5 transactions a month, the issue is they hate ppl doing 5 x 1c transactions. But that's not cheating that's abiding by the rules they set
they need to make the rules different if they don't like it, instead of throwing their toys out the pram and closing peoples accounts.

I guess it's just me, but I really cannot fathom why people have such a problem with this.

Nearly everyone buys milk or bread or other low value items. I get my 5 transactions by buying a $1.50 litre bottle of Woolies Milk once a week, and maybe a $1 cherry ripe bar when on special for the fifth transaction. I have to buy those items anyway (well not the Cherry Ripe necessarily), so I don't lose anything other than a minuscule few QFF points by not using my credit card.

What magical power is bestowed on you if you only spend 5 cents to try and meet the requirement?? Yes I know it is just a game to some people, but as a few have found out, ING is taking their bat and ball and going home.

    • Just deal with a bank that isn't bound to make another hola hoop to jump through.
Growth was a big issue for me so I jumped ship

johninmelb - I am at high risk if I catch Covid and avoid Supermarkets do most of my shopping by click and collect. Some people are disabled and maybe have trouble getting out of the house. Just a couple of scenarios to fathom.

      • +1

Understand your situation perfectly, and yes, you are in a bind in trying to meet the conditions. In that situation, there are limited options.

My reply was more in answer to the OP who I believe was looking for ways to game the system, rather than genuinely not being able to meet the requirement.

Almost every thing I buy, and bill I pay goes on my credit card to earn QFF points. I only use my ING card on rare occasions for low value stuff that I would have used cash for in the old days.

  • i have an ING mortgage, i get these ATM rebates without doing 5 transactions :P

  • Do they just close your account point blank or they give a warning first?

    • +1

From what people have posted they inform you beforehand, but you cannot do anything to prevent it.

  • 5x $1.00 fund deposits into The Lott also works. Can't withdraw it though, have to buy a ticket

  • It's not that hard to scan and pay 5 items separately at self check out in woolies.

  • deposit 5*1$ to linkt

Used to do the Coles/Woolies work around and noticed they are starting to not be counted.

    Revolut bank app.
Add money $25 minimum from ING debit card 5 times
Afterwards transfer the $125 out of Revolut back into your bank, I use a third bank for this rather than transferring back to ING

  • I just make 5x $1 payments to Optus each month, takes me about a minute.

  • I’m going overseas for a few months and have the same question… want to make 5 AUD purchases online. PayPal sounds like a good option if it works, I’ll have to test it next month.

    • +1

I have been using PayPal for over 12 months.

      • My partner has BOQ too, so could I just send $1 to him and he sends $1 to me 5 times? And that counts? If so, sick!

        • Yes, that is what I do except 1c because I am at the max and it takes all of 2 minutes. Although some have said that their accounts have been closed down and believe it's because of this. So try to use the accounts for some other things as well. I just transfer money in and out now and then and use it for very small purchases at Colesworth. This account is the best for using ATMs overseas for example.

  • Any further advice around these 5 transactions please? I have tried BeemIt and 1c PayPal but both come up as 'withdrawal'. I will give Revout a go as well but any other ideas in the meantime? Is PayPal still working for you @Yola? I am overseas for a few months so no card option. Cheers

    • Paypal transactions for me have always said "withdrawal", and counted for the 5 transactions as late as August 2023 (stopped using ING after this)

    • I am not sure what the Paypal transactions are called but last month I did 5 and did not use the account for any other payments at all. I received the bonus interest today. Are you saying that you do not have a card for this account? If you do you can make purchases overseas to qualify.

  • i'm dropping ING…had Mac and recent got up bank and looking for another card for travel but also using as daily driver..just got ubank but doesn't have bankpost so thinking dropping it getting bankwest and seems quite dead.
