AM4 ATX Motherboard for Dual Graphics Cards

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting a 2nd gpu to speed up my 3D rendering, and thus I need to upgrade my current b450 mobo to a board that has 2 PCIE 4.0 lanes. I'm tossing up between waiting for AM5 and getting a brand new board + processor (gonna be costly AF), or just sticking with my 3900x and upgrading just the motherboard. I'm assuming I'd only be able to choose an ATX board as micro ATX seems too small to fit 2 GPUs? Also looking for WIFI+Bluetooth built in as well.

I've done some research and have come across this board: https://www.centrecom.com.au/msi-mag-x570s-tomahawk-max-wifi…

And this seems to be a cheaper option, albeit a less premium brand and the 2nd PCIE lane only being gen 3 : https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/motherboards/amd-socket-…

Would love to hear your suggestions :)

  • I thought B450 only supports PCIE 3.0 not 4.0
Anyway most M/B only support 16x + 4x slots (my B550M has 16x PCIe 4 + 4x PCIe 3.0 for 2 GPUs) other than M/B which support CPUs with higher number of PCIe lanes like Xenon

I would not get a new M/B for 3900X and might sell it altogether and get a new Intel bases CPU+M/B, may be after 13th gen release

Second lane only being gen 3 shouldn't be an issue, not really any cards that saturate it. You can get cheaper though, MSI make a B450 board with two PCIe x16 slots - https://www.mwave.com.au/product/msi-b450-tomahawk-max-ii-am…

ASRock is a great brand, btw. Always comes down to the individual board but I've had plenty of their high end boards over the years and they're rock solid.

Upgrading comes down to your workload, how CPU bound you are and what GPUs you're going to use though. Also, thought about just selling your current GPU and buying a new one? There are some cheap 3090s around these days.

    • Thanks for linking the board,

it looks really great but having no wifi is kind of a deal breaker for me. I've just looked for a wifi version of the tomahawk max but can't seem to find one/

Good to know you rep ASRock, have heard bad things about them being the lowest tier of mobo brands and I really do not want to cheap on my mobo

I'm not CPU bound as Redshift (my render engine) uses the GPUs for rendering so the CPU isn't utilised much at all. I've currently got a 3060ti and am looking at adding a 3080.

I've thought about a single card setup, but Redshift hugely favours dual GPUs over a single one, according to benchmarks having dual 3070s provides 30% faster render times than a single 3090. Since I already have a 3060ti (almost equiv to a 3070), adding a 3080 will make the render times around 40% quicker than a 3090 at a cheaper price. (Since if I were to sell my 3060ti I'd probs only get around $550 tops)

What card are you using at the moment?

    • 3060ti!

      • Yeah I don't know about redshift. But if you're doing it professionally it's probably worth spending the cash on whatever is the best.
