RAM is soldered in and can't be upgraded. And being stuck with just 4gb is a dealbreaker unfortunately

    • +8

Agreed. 4gb ram makes this junk sadly

  • +6

4gb ram no chance to run web browser smoothly.

    My 8gb struggles

    • +14

Dont open porn on many tabs :)

    • Delete windows —> Install Linux —> Nice

      • Probably better options if you just want a linux tab tbh

    • +2

If you struggle to run a web browser with 8gb ram than ram isn’t your issue.

  • +5

4gb soldered ram (LPDDR3), pretty bad. Also soldered ssd so expect around 100gb usable space after w11 install. Also a pain to disassemble if you want to replace the battery down the line. If it came with a drawing pen you could argue a use case as a graphics tablet. Not sure about colour accuracy but screen size+resolution seems decent enough for that kind of thing.

  • +2

There's no i5-7760. Do you mean the i7-7760U? If so, that's a dual core with 4GB of RAM and ~100GB of usable storage..

  • +3

good price if this was 8th gen i5 with 8gb ram

    • +2

If this had twice the cores and twice the RAM it'd likely be twice the price tbf

      • +1

More like this one should be half the price. $120-150max would be realistic, given the modern day usability of these devices and having the battery condition unknown.

        • And yet the keyboard of these devices is more than $120. I feel like if this was a regular 2 in 1 than yes, but Surface will always be overpriced even as a refurb.

          • @pennypincher98: If they're new, and you buy them separate to the device. A used type-cover for a surface pro 5 doesn't fetch $120.

            • @buffalo bill: It seems a lot of people are trying
Closest thing to $120-$150 with a keyboard was a Surface Pro 2 at $159

              • @pennypincher98: Good luck, last sale for a brand-new type cover (under completed items) went for $89 or so, a couple went higher but they're hardly a big seller and it basically dumps the price of the unit when it has no keyboard.

Yeah, still gonna go with the masses and say no bargain here.

                • @buffalo bill: I'm not saying it's a bargain by any stretch. I'm just saying Surface is overpriced to begin with, so refurb Surface isn't suddenly going to be good value.
Btw I'm not any of those sellers lol.

  • +6

not just the ram but surface batteries and probably the worst thing about them - especially at this age

    • I second this, yesterday i had to open a Surface Pro 4 with a severely expanded battery to remove the SSD from it… that was not fun at all.

      • Well lucky for you the SSD in this one can't even be removed since it's soldered!

      • +2

I buy all my kit second hand but won't touch the Surface for exactly this reason. For all practical purposes they're unfixable.

  • +1

A heads up to anyone considering buying, the Surface Pro 5 does not officially support Windows 11. So support from official Microsoft channels may be a hit or miss.

Additionally, it looks like UN Tech does not offer warranty (and possibly support) for software, so if you run into issues with Windows 11, you might not be able to get any support.

4gb is just joke with soldered on ram

  • +9

Do us all a favour and recycle this safely and never post anything like it ever again

      ooft, user name checksout

      Tough, but fair.

I have a couple of these. Excellent quality screens for watching Netflix, Kayo etc. The Camera is also great for Skype calls etc. Not total junk however, I would not pay $296.10.

I got an SP5 with 8gb RAM and 256gb HDD, with official keyboard, A+ Grade and 1 year warranty for $299 so this is not a good deal.

      • I'm waiting for refurbished SP6 with 16gb ram, 256gb SSD and keyboard for $299 to hit the market.

8gb just doesn't cut it these days and will become sluggish in a few years time.

        • you might be waiting for a long time.

the older <SP7s are not without issues.

          • @slowmo: What's wrong with SP6?

            • @Homr: anecdotal but here's my experience
sp4 - screen recall (this is an actual factory recall by ms)
              sp5 - doa battery
sp6 - 1x doa battery , 1x random dead after about 3 months (powers on but no other 'movement')

              sp5/6 -> https://www.techradar.com/news/microsoft-surface-pro-5-and-6…

fwiw, i am using the i7, 16gb, 1tb configurations for the above. i got all of that replaced (not repair) under warranty, so no dramas on my end, however if you are thinking of getting an old sp, just be mindful of what might go wrong.

              • @slowmo: hrmm thats no good then. What about the SP 7+? Do they have any issues?

                • @Homr: no experience with 7+
i have the sp7 and sp8, so far so good.

  • +9

Do not buy a Microsoft Surface Pro that is more than 3 years old, you will thank me later.
These are not fun devices to repair or work on should there be a problem.
If the battery starts expanding then good luck finding anyone that will want to replace the battery in it, let alone charge you a reasonable amount of money to do so.

    • same can be said for any laptops with non-replaceable batteries nowadays. while it's not like ms specifically use bad quality batteries, i find that they just have really bad firmware updates with their surface pros.

  • This spec level was barely acceptable in 2017, let alone 2022 with content rich websites and browsers like Chrome/Edge. They scraped by (through use of cloud storage) and ran OK back in the day for light productivity use, but I would imagine would be very frustrating to use these days if they even still worked - batteries were terrible. Pass.

  • Any cheaper without Windows?

    • +1

No, these machines have licences which are tried to the hardware. I've never refurbs sold without a licence.

  • For me, I think this is OP, Just ordered one. Thank you!
