Yes it's just a button LOL.

RRP:$49.95, was $39.95 yesterday but cheaper again today for whatever reason. Current price not even registering on Camels, which last updated 26 days ago (I dunno how to trigger it to update).

FWIW the item description has pictures in Japanese and text for the Indoor Motion Sensor so caveat emptor I guess, even though the seller is Amazon AU. I'm not aware of any Hue knock-offs…

Do people really like buying new coin battery every year? I prefer the new IKEA's AAA one.

    • +8

Have mine 2+ years and still havent needed a change of battery

    • +5

over estimating the power consumption. my kids loved playing with the toggles when i'm not there physically watching. (lol)

i've the dimmer switch for years now.

    • +1

A couple of years back I bought a brand new Philips Dimmer switch from Amazon that the Hue app reported as "low battery" right out of the box. Complained to Amazon, got refunded. 2 years of light use later, still haven't replaced the battery.

Re: the IKEA one, I'd be interested to see if it ends up getting Matter support. I'm kinda hoping that these Hue ones will (although I'm guessing there would be a high likelihood).

    • +1

I've had 2 Hue dimmer switches for well over 2 years now. Both of them get used almost daily, and I haven't had to change a battery yet. YMMV.

    • +1

I’m on 4 years for my dimmer switches and never replaced a battery!

    • Your thinking of cheap tuya wifi ones that use alot of power

    • What IKEA ones use AAA

        • Might be a basic question - but would this Ikea remote control work with the Hue bridge and bulbs?

I know both Hue and Ikea's smart lighting range work via Zigbee, but I can't visualise how they might work together… happy to do some reading too if necessary, thanks in advance.

          • @shake: I have Ikea lights that worked with the Hue bridge/app, but it wouldn't elevate them to HomeKit (not sure if that matters to you).

I've since ditched the Hue hub and made a Raspberry Pi deCONZ Zigbee hub, to which I can connect Zigbee stuff ANY manufacturer, and they all coexist and work together on the same Zigbee mesh. There are many other ways to make or buy generic Zigbee hubs too.

            • @jaydisc: if you are that techie, it's easy to link it all up with homebridge running in a docker container which will get it to work with homekit.

out of the box, ikea iot only wants to talk to ikea hubs, it is by design, just like most other iot makers.

they may work with minimal functionality (eg, on/off) , but to get the full features, you'd need their hubs.

depends on how much of a fan you are on being your own home IT support, rolling your own zigbee hubs, containers to merge all of those things is possible and is openly documented.

edit: meant to reply to shake but somehow to you instead.

        • have you used this with something other than the Ikea stuff?
the ikea dimmer switch I have has major battery drain issues when paired to ZHA on home assistant using a flashed sonoff gateway

    • +3

my philips hue dimmer switch hasn't had a battery change in 7 yrs, still works, although i use the switch about once or twice a day.
my other dimmer gets used multiple times a day required a new battery after 4yrs.

    • Zigbee really uses super low power compared to wifi. Its not uncommon (see below posters) for people to be able to run for many years without chaning a battery with switches and the like.

    That's an expensive button.

    • +17

wait till you get the quote for a sparky to come put a 'proper' light button in your wall.

      • 120 for a dimmer

      • Proper Clipsal light switches etc are expensive too, Sparkies hate the Delta / HPM ones

        • +1

Ye, I installed a cheap ~$30 Delta one (took like 5 mins) and the flicker on lights on lowest brightness is irritating, I think you would go blind sitting on that dim. Not sure if changing the downlights would help, but im not using super cheap downlights either

I believe those buttons can be detached from the baseplate (they're held on magnetically) so if you've got small kids you're likely to lose it.

  • I thought with this you could twist the button like a traditional dimmer but reading seems its only push and hold which is a bit disappointing (especially considering the price vs say a $12 Ikea dimmer.)

    • It's just a standalone momentary switch. You can program the system to cycle through various light settings, but no, there is no dimmer. The round bit is the switch, and does have a magnet on the back, so can be mounted on anything that's got the right sort of steel in it (I've got one mounted on an Ikea bedside lamp…it matches and works well - magnet is pretty strong).

As simple as it seems, I kind of like it. Very useful in some places. If you're planning on leaving it on the wall, then probably best just to have one of the dimmer switches instead.

    • +1

Philips just released the hue Tap Dial which has the dimmer function, they're 80 bucks though, just bought mine directly from their website.

      • Ah yeh, thats what I was expecting this one to do. Pretty good, 4 button too but yeh $80 a pop pricey..

Link if anyone else is interested.

  • -1

If the button isn’t a rotary control either this is a pretty big rip off.

I’ve got a bunch of the 4 button Hue remotes and setting scenes is handy

    • +3

Yeah the 4 button dimmer switches are hard to beat, you can program them to do dozens of things.

      • +1

Got examples? I’m aware of what the dimmer switch can do via the dedicated Hue app. I also tried to use them directly with SmartThings but they tend to lose pairing/connection quickly.
What do you do / what works? Thanks!

    Translation from the Japanese images:

Press the button and adjust the light
It uses batteries so it's easy to use
When you go out just 1 press
    You can adjust whenever
    (Motivated) (concentrate) (reading) (relax)(night light)
Customise smart button using the application

  • Question for Hue smart experts. I'm new to the Philips Hue ecosystem. Can you pair these buttons with any Hue Smart lights?

Will it work with the pendant light deal from yesterday
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/724723

    Thanks in advance

    • +1

Will work with all hue and ZigBee hue compatible in the hue app eco system

    • +3

The proper way of using Hue system is to have a Hue Bridge.
Then every device (bulb, strip, socket, switch, motion sensor) is connected to the bridge.
Then you can use any switch or button to control any combination of lights.

    • +1

get the starter kit with hue bridge as an initial investment. with the hue bridge, you can do a lot of things other than just remote on/off.

  • +1

There are some pretty good prices on other Hue gear

I think this link is clean, if not search "Philips Hue" then click "Todays Deals"in the left sidebar and reactivate cash rewards etc

  • Will this button work with other smart device under Alexa? Or have to Philips hue device?

    • If you have one of the Echo devices with a zigbee hub then, theoretically, it should be detected by the hub, and then you could set up whatever automations the Alexa app will allow you to do.

Caveat: I don't have the smart button so can't confirm that the Echo actually does detect it properly without the Hue bridge.

  • Love hue product, a bit pricey but reliable.
Connected some of them to hubitat and been working great.

I wish they have the humidity sensor, as the one I have from aqara quite often not working
