[VIC] SunRice Short Grain Australian Grown Sushi Rice 10kg $20 @ Colonial Fresh Market, Chadstone

120

Could be the same price at Doncaster, Glen Waverley etc. as well. I'm not sure.

This is Australian grown short grain, not the inferior Vietnamese grown short grain with a fake Japanese name you get from WW/Coles

Under current inflation, SunRice Australian grown medium grain is now $19/10kg during marking down @ WW/Coles since mid-Aug, (jumped from $8/5kg or $16/10kg in July), which makes $20/10kg short grain become very attractive.

For your reference, it's $3.50/750g @WW ($47/10kg) and it's normally around $30 in Clayton or Springvale's Asian groceries.
Yes, I know it's $9.75 up there in QLD, but petrol is skyrocket now…

Anyway, Enjoy your Japanese meal :) and God save the Queen.

  • This is garbage rice.

    • I’ve never had it. Is it that bad?

  • Whats wrong with Vietnamese rice?

    • I think its packaging is deceiving to most people.

What I saw one at Woolies it has Thai dancer pics and people assume it’s Thai rice, but it’s in fact Vietnamese rice.

The other has Japanese look but in fact it’s Vietnamese rice.

I have no idea what happened, Sun rice short grain rice(exactly that packaging) taste and texture were really shit this year, it's worst than Hinata.
However, Sun rice Koshihikary is really good but problem is the price.

    • You’d expect the rice to be consistent year to year wouldn’t you? I can’t comment as I’ve never had this rice.

I used SunRice Koshihikari before (Uruguay) and thought it was great.

I then tried Taiwanese short grain rice (didn’t want Vietnamese or Chinese) but didn’t really like as much. SunRice Koshihikari was sold out at the Asian Grocer at the time.

Next time I’ll seek out SunRice Koshihikari before I run out. It cost a little more but I think it’s worth it since a bag will last us a year. We eat more Jasmine, and recently I purchased Basmati to make Mexican/flavoured rice with tomatoes/beans.

      • Actually, since rice is grown in nature and not made out of plastic in factories, they would vary year to year depending on weather conditions.

    https://www.sunrice.com.au/products/bulk-bag-rice/

SunRice (Ricegrowers Limited) dominates rice products in Australia, they use original Japanese trade names in their products but the content can be sourced from anywhere. In Asian grocery stores, rice bags with their real countries brands and packages can be found. I can say their taste and texture are distinctly different from SunRice.

Worth a note; sunrice "medium grain" is actually calrose rice :)

Not as sticky, being medium, but the flavor is superb.
