    And there goes my weekend!

    • +2

      Pick up that can

      • +2

Now, put it in the trash can.

  • +7

I remember the days when alphas/betas/trials were free and there was never any expectation of a) publishers charging for them, or b) consumers paying for them.

I'll be right back… Have to fire up the forklift to move around my 5MB hard drive.

  • If this is anything remotely as good as HL:A, it will be amazing.

    • Well if memory serves me correctly, the base game Half-Life 2 was a great game so fingers crossed this will be just as good.

  • Do I need the original half life 2 on steam?

    It says cannot be added

    • Do you have enough space?

    • +2

      yes you do

    • +3

You.. Don't? You must be the only person with a pc, vr headset and ozbargain access who doesn't have hl2..

      • Or maybe they don’t even have a vr headset and are just collecting.

      • Lol I don’t have it either on steam, had a offline copy…

        • "offline" - how many zips did it come in?

          • @serpserpserp: 3000 x 1.44mb

But yeah the valve complete pack.. I would have thought everyone owned it.

            • +1

  • There was a problem adding this product to your account. Please try again later.

    • +1

      You need HL2 installed

    • You need the original Half-Life 2 first

  • +1

Looks awesome! Huge fan of HLA hopefully this will give similar vibes

  • Need to buy a VR setup as a present and want to know what's the best VR equipment to buy that he will really feel like he's there? Is Quest 2 considered top end equipment, and is it supported by SteamVR?

    • -2

You can use Quest 2 with Steam games. You will need a link cable. The wireless is not good enough IMO.

Quest 2 was incredible value until it got a price hike. It's still great but feels weird to pay $638 (128gb version) when it was $470 very recently. But it's still better or at least as good as the Vive Pro which is more expensive.

      • +5

I use wireless (AirLink) exclusively and it works perfectly.

      • +2

I use the quest with wireless and it works fine. You do have to have an excellent wifi signal and it helps if it’s in line of sight (ie no walls in the way). I’ve never tried cable but think it would be a much better experience without being tethered. Ultimately everybody’s mileage will vary but just wanted to state that wireless is possible but you do need favourable wifi conditions.

        • There are extreme data throughput limitations embedded which will affect palette resolution and graphical experience. I use sidequest to enhance the palette resolution and the games look incredible. About 25-30% better than the default palette settings. Airlink is even worse than the latter for some games. So, although it works fine if you have WiFi 6 it is still not as good. Of course, using a link cable you can also play and charge.

          • @[Deactivated]: Interesting point. Wasn’t aware of these limitations. I probably wouldn’t notice unless I played them side by side. For my setup being tethered to the PC isn’t an option as it’s in another room plus I like the freedom of being wire free. Each to their own👍

            • @Pretzal: What laptop or desktop.are you guys using tho to support the quest 2 airlink or cable

              • @AussieMark: PC
                11400f
                Gtx 1070
                16gb 3600 RAM
Wifi - unifi with AC -PRO access point

          • @[Deactivated]: Do you have a comparison?

              • @[Deactivated]: Thank you but I meant I meant the color palette part between Airlink vs cable for PCVR

                • +1

@kehuehue: You can't get that enhanced palette on Airlink and PCVR due to data bandwidth limit in the Quest 2. So that enhanced mode is only possible for PCVR if using a link cable otherwise you get a much lower resolution. You can do it for standard Quest games but it eats up a lot more memory so you will still need to be linked or use a battery pack. Also, even without the enhancement to the palette resolution PCVR games are a lower resolution due to Airlink's bandwidth limit. So, the differences shown in that video are the best case Airlink palette resolution (default) versus enhanced mode which is only possible with a link cable for PCVR games.

                  • @[Deactivated]: memory=battery

In my defence I wrote that after a party at 3am 😁

They're about to release an updated version of the Quest 2, Quest 2 Pro (or something like that) that will be vastly better, but also "probably" 2x the price. It will be announced October.

      • +2

yeah apparently the 'quest pro' is aim more towards the business/wfh audience. There's leaks of the images and videos of it. Apparently it's about ~$800-1200US.
Info/pics/specs can be found here: https://www.roadtovr.com/meta-quest-pro-unboxing-leak-video/

      • +1

I understand they use the same processor. The new one has face and eye tracking which I imagine is still experimental. It also has OLED instead of LCD. It will likely look good and will probably be more comfortable but I doubt it's worth an extra $800-1000.

    • +1

Quest 2 isnt top end, but its great value for money and doesnt have half bad specs (I say this as someone who bought a G2 over the quest after putting a lot of thought into it).

  • +1

HL2 was one of the first vr titles I played back when I had access to a DK2. This I used some third-party program to get it running. It was clunky, to say the least.

Playing HLA earlier this year really made me appreciate how far a lot of vr titles have come in only a couple of years.

Will be interesting to see what adjustments they've made for this mod, which if it's managed by Valve, I'd expect it to be pretty damn good.

    • +2

It's community made mod don't think it has anything to do with Valve.

      • Ahh, fair enough. I didn't look too deeply into it,

        • +1

Don’t write it off because it’s community made, the VR mod for Doom 3 is better than the official port

  • Godamn I really want to play this and HL Alyx but I have horrible arachnophobia sadly and for some reason even games with them scare the shit out of me.

    • You could look at like exposure therapy. I don’t have arachnophobia and it still scared the shit out of me! I had to start playing during the day only but it was so good I couldn’t stop! You do get desensitised to it as you go along though.
Everything good in life always happens outside your comfort zone!

    • There are spiders in the game/s? I don't know anything about the game

      • +1

No spiders but there are headcrabs which might trigger arachnophobia.
Seeing one in VR for the first time was a bit unsettling

        • The antlions are also kinda spider looking. Considering how modded source games are maybe there's model replacer mods out there.

      • Those black headcrabs from half life 2/episodes are awful, and in VR they are a lot more real. They do make me feel physically ill sometimes in Alyx.

  • +1

Holy cow this is biggggggg for me! Just saying, any schedule for half life 3?

    • All this teasing, half life alyx, now this… dont they realise the community wants a full half life 3 in all its glory

  • What's the best VR quality/value set for playing games like this on steam?

    • +1

      Quest 2

    • +1

Even with it's recent price increase it's still the Quest 2. Valve Index is your main other option, it's better in some ways and not as good in others, but costs $370 more.

      • Valve Index isnt $370 more its a lot more as you need the stations

    • +1

Not sure on best quality but Quest 2 is easily the best value. Even after the price hike, the price is unbeatable. Although you also need to link your Facebook Meta account (same thing really) which means handing over personal details

    • +2

Quest 2, Gaming PC, WiFi 6 Router (For AirLink) + Half Life Alyx and you will have an out of this world experience

  • +1

As excited as I am about this, i think my baracle phobia will stop my enjoying this in VR. Also ravenholm.

    • Fukn A, ravenholm freaked me out as a teenager

      • Yep, especially after specifically warning us not to go to ravenholm, they send us to ravenholm.

The barnacles in vr might be a bit much for me. Getting your head bitten off in vr sounds a bit too intense.

        • Are the graphics remastered for this VR hl2?

  • I remember HL2, I played it on my $900 17" Samsung LCD… you peasants were still CRT.

  • Reminds me I still have this 10+ year old gift on Steam back before HL2 was free and now it's an unknown package.

    • HL2 isn’t free

      • I was sure they made it free or perhaps for a long time

        • I think they were free-to-play around the launch of HL:Alyx but was limited time and not to keep

  • Good mix of mods compatible with this can be found here: https://github.com/Ashok0/HL2VREssentials

  • Without teleportation I don't last long

    • +1

Yep I'll be puking my guts up just like a barnacle that has been shot.

  • +1

Internet humour is the best humour. Found in the reviews:

Looks great, cant wait for someone to mod this so I can play without a vr headset!

I can't work out how to link to the comment from the Steam app on mobile…posted by user Unmans.

  • I hope they mod Half Life Alyx so you can play it normally on PC or if they put it on Xbox that would be great.

    • You will appreciate it more when you get the chance to try it in VR. If you finished it on PC version, then tried VR version after you wouldn't appreciate it as much or be reclined to experience the VR version which you would be missing out.

  • +1

Waiting for a good VR Half Life Alyx deal
