That’s not the same card, you can’t compare them like that.

      • +1

With RTX on, the 12GB 4080 will be 2.5X faster than 3080 10GB.

        • Lol marketing got you good.

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: Am not recommending that card at that price tho! Its a 4070.

            • @John Doh: I've never forgotten Digital Foundry getting exclusive access to the 30 series and seeing how grossly exaggerated performance figures were…..

Until independent reviewers get them, take every performance indicators with an absolute grain of salt.

              • +1

@scuderiarmani: Agree, and not just that, one shouldnt even consider purchasing anything till RDNA3 is announced. They are usually VFM cards.

The 4090 on the other hand is a neat card as it really has all those extra shaders and clockspeeds to do the heavy lifting. But I have a feeling it can only flex its muscles at higher resolutions and will really only be twice as fast probably at 8K! But 3K AUD is a bit of too much.

                • +1

@John Doh: I have a 3080 myself, initial early model TUF, but I honestly hardly ever use it, despite having a large PC game collection I often just don't have the time and play on consoles anyway with my daughter.

I upgraded from the 1080 to 2080 to 3080 but I just can't see myself bothering anymore, at this price it's not even remotely appealing. I keep feeling it's more in the 'nice to have' market now as opposed to actually being all that important atm.

                  • +1

@scuderiarmani: I am exactly in the same boat as you, but I still have a 1080. I have a huge collection of games that I want to play, but rarely get time to play. And when I do find time, I end up watching TV series.

But I have been a full time gamer since I was kid and that hasnt died in me. So I will still upgrade to a new card this generation early next year once everything settles down, just to have that satisfaction that I have a nice gaming machine :)

But at best, not more than a 1200$ card.

                    • @John Doh: Sounds the same, when I get time I just watch something else but I still cling to that joy I experienced as a kid. Doesn't help having a 34 then 49 Ultrawide though as I feel compelled to drive it properly, hence the upgrades along the way.

$2k plus for a GPU just seems way outta the casual market. It starts becoming less desirable at that point.

Also, given I wear glasses, am so familiar with console gaming, the stupidly high refresh rates are a little lost on me. I just go for visuals anyway.

                      • @scuderiarmani: 100% This. Visuals and Freesync/Gysc at 75FPS is more than sufficient- atleast for me. I have a 27DGF and with tweaking the game a little bit, I easily get 75FPS in most games with quality almost as good as high. Hence I waited this long to upgrade. But I am more inclined towards that Alienware 38" now ;)

When they say HODL till next gen, that doesn't mean buy at next gen price. It means HODL until next gen where either next gen will be better value OR you can buy this gen at a better price due to introduction of next gen.

        • Or, just keep hodling and not ever buy a card.

  • +2

Or you could just pick up a used one from ebay between 700 - 900 (approx 20% discount).
Likely to get lower given the amount of people who have shut down mining farms.

Apparently even years of mining has little or no affect on GPU performance:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKqVvXTanzI

Plus the best way to get more hashs out of these cards was to make sure they had exceptional cooling.

    • +5

gaming doesn't need hash, mining is over. $700 ex mined gpu, if its dead you wasted $700.

I'd rather pay $999 with 3 years warranty.

      • +6

Most of the 3080's on ebay come with 1-2 years of warranty left (which is legally required to be supported by the manufacturers in aus).

Not sure what you're talking about gaming not needing hash, my point specifically was miners have likely kept these cards cool to maximise profits, which mitigates damage to the cards FROM mining.
Obviously mining is over, and some of the biggest reddit groups supporting GPU mining have shut down entirely to avoid moderating the shilling of crap on there.

I suspect a lot of miners are slowly selling their cards to avoid flooding the market like last time.
Only an absolute fool would sit on the stock rather than passing on the asset while it still has value.

        • Most of the 3080's on ebay come with 1-2 years of warranty left (which is legally required to be supported by the manufacturers in aus).

Enforceable warranty from used ebay purchase?
Most don't have a receipt.. The buyer isn't the original purchaser with the original retail outlet for consumer law guarantees etc. Cards might not even be from Aus originally… You really don't know what the warranty status is in most cases.

          • @picket23: Sure, so you have a few options.
Firstly, you can buy ones with a receipt (which is what I was suggesting), or you can research if the supplier will take returns without one.

The DOM of some of these will be under the warrenty peroid, which will usally be enough for a lot of companies.
I've had this experience before with Seagate and EVGA, never even asked for proof of purchased, they just took the product and replaced it.
But you definately don't "only need to buy a new one" to get warrenty.

            • +1

              @thedean: Yeah so:

Most of the 3080's on ebay come with 1-2 years of warranty left (which is legally required to be supported by the manufacturers in aus).

Is not accurate in my experience. Very few ebay listings have a warranty status that I would rely on.

"only need to buy a new one"

Not sure who you are quoting with that. For the record I buy most computer gear second hand and highly recomend doing it dilligently.

    • +5

Of course mining won't affect GPU performance, it reduces the life of the card.

      • +3

There is no objective evidence of this. Anecdotally this is commonly believed, but based on what?

I've used workstation CPUs with adequate cooling at work, mostly under full load for years and years, then typically taken home by someone and used every day until EOL, and they STILL don't fail.
Same for workstation GPU's. Difference is EOL on a GPU is reached sooner because modern games and software makes them so inefficient that people upgrade.

What are you saying is going to fail to shorten the lifespan? The fans? The processor? The ram? Do you have any references to thorough tests that yeild this evidence? Or you just believe it in your bones?

        • +2

CPUs are really hardy so I'm not surprised they last years.
GPUs are not so tough. Also it's a complete lottery with used cards.
Did the miner run it in a cool and clean space, undervolted and set power limits to keep it running at reasonable temperatures.
Or is it just some guy that had no idea, runs it in a hot box at full throttle?
Usage and heat degrades the GPU but if taken care of, I wouldn't be too worried but the latter case can seriously shorten life.

          • +3

@FireRunner: Same worries from any used GPU. Gamers are more likely to overclock and run at high temps and not cool down after use.

            • +1

@onlinepred: Exactly my point. Even from a personal standpoint.
I run two GPU's. Desktop GPU in a SFF case, and it gets HOT and is overclocked.

HTPC / Server GPU in a server case. It was used for the odd TV gaming, but mostly undervolted and mined for a whole year.
Personally my bet is on the mining GPU being in better condition right now.
Also just look at peoples mining set ups. They are open air most of the time, compared to a hot a cramped CPU case.
The perfect second hand card is one that's unopened, otherwise it's all an equal gamble and we should just enjoy the flood of good deals they are incoming comparatively to the previous 24 months.

              • @thedean: why ppl still OC gpus? isnt UV the new best method?

                • +1

@Hornpub: Moar powar, ovbiously. And because I can

        • -4

Heat damages all electrical components, components made on a nanometre scale are especially sensitive.

This is common sense, I don't need to prove anything. Enjoy your artifacting used GPU.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yes, so if the miner wanted to make money, they would have kept it cool… basic stuff here mate

            • -1

@onlinepred: No, they would have improved the cooling, so the card can reach higher clockspeeds at the same temperature… basic stuff here mate

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Core Clock speed generally doesn't affect mining, miners tend to underclock/undervolt as memory is the key. A mining card by any knowledgeable miner will probably be in better condition than an gamers card. having said that I personally would be nervous about taking the gamble with any second hand card as you can never really know if it was some idiot trying to get that 1 extra FPS out of COD in his furnace of a bedroom or a miner that underclocked in a well cooled open case.

              • +4

@[Deactivated]: Clearly the miners you know weren't very profitable haha. They typically run open cases in an AC room, their cards will typically be underclocked and will not reach even stock clockspeeds, therefore often run well under normal operating temps.

                • +2

@onlinepred: There's memory clock / vrm, obviously nobody gives a toot about the core clock.

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: heat cycling is far more damaging than just heat (if at manufacturer toleranced temps)

      • +2

Not as much as gamers who overclock them does. Mining isn't that bad honestly. They underclock them and keep them cool. No harsh shutdowns like gamers do, not leaving enough time for it to cool down etc.

  • Leather jacket + Blue hoodie = ?

  • +9

4080 and 4090 pricing is a joke, no thanks. I'll keep holding for AMD pricing.

  • +1

Will we get spiderman game with this

  • +3

People might go back to the RTX 30 series cards now as the new RTX 40 series literally use software gate to lock users of 20 and 30 series card from accessing the new DLSS 3.0 technology.

    • Debunked they said 3.0 is trash on amphere

  • +6

$1000 for a 3080 10gb is still a waste of money .you can get a 3080ti 12gb for $1,199. Which is still too high imo. Why dont people just wait and see what AMD do ? Rdna3 is cheaper too make compared to ada, so AMD could price aggressively against nvidia

    • -2

Ti versions should always be premium priced around 2k or more

  • +4

lol NVIDIA can eff themselves in the arse with a cactus - they're just jacking up the price because the 30 series showed them they can trickle out supply to justify their prices. Guaranteed they're going to do the same here.

My 1080Ti is still doing fine for mainstream FPS games, I'm happy to let NVIDIA sweat their mistake.

  • Looks way way less interesting with the 4000 series, and the ability to now have mods scale every game in raytraced lighting via their pipeline will force people onto their platform, the question is can amd also utilise the software scaler provided by Nvidia.

But for 3080, for 999, they gotta be kidding.

  • +18

Don't do it folks, Nvidia are being greedy scum. Definitely wait for AMD cards before any purchase.

    • +3

This year I'm more excited for AMD!
I've been running a 6700xt on the dell qhd monitor since release and it's honestly amazing.

    • Do you think AMD is going to sell us their new 7000 series GPUs at much better value than Nvidia?

      • +3

It's not just RRP, release and confirmation of AMD pricing, lower demand in the market, and finally more supply may encouage some retail level disounts or price decreases.
Nvidia just guessing the market at the moment, AMD with a chipliet design may be more competitive on price.

      • +2

depends entirely on AMD, NVidia have given them the perfect opportunity to steal a lot of market share with this pricing while still being able to make money themselves. Though if AMD do undercut significantly, I could see Nvidia quickly backtracking as with the loss of the mining market they can't afford to sacrifice more market share.

        • The damage might already be done unless they drop the price before launch. Nvidia cards cost a lot more to make so they wont want to drop much more . Amd cards are much cheaper to make apparently so they could come in with much cheaper cards and still make a profit . If theyre smart and want to stick it nvidia and take a huge chunk of market share away thats what they should do…but its always easier to take the easy money safe route instead of long term dominace so it could go either way. Amd cards will be cheaper regardless but it depends on how muhc lower if they really want to gain market share and make nvidia look bad

    • +1

Yep. These Nvidia prices have me considering AMD for next purchase. Nvidia is getting far too greedy.

    • I'd buy an AMD card, but my TV only likes G-Sync. I know, 1st world problem of the 99% percentile, but I can't go back from high Hz/FPS to 60 V-Sync…

  • +4

HODL. 4080 and 4090 release October 12. I expect these 3080 and 3090 to fire sale. Ethereum changed to proof of stake so gpu mining is dead as well.

I have a 3080 already but I don't see a need to upgrade yet. But if I was in the market I'd still wait unless you desperately need something now.

    • +2

Yep, op is a dirty basement investor and is constantly salty about the death of crypto. Definitely hodl.

  • +10

    4000 series priced high
    TSMC over booking of production
    EVGA gtfo
Etherum change over / mining fire sale

Leaning towards holding and seeing the madness in a few months time

    • +4

EVGA leaving the partnership is very telling, they were probably given the invoice for all the chips they were required to purchase.

They know 4080s and 4090s won't sell in any significant numbers without mining demand, they were probably looking at huge losses.

    • +1

you forgot US ban China receiving AI equipment.

  • can't we get 3090 for this price ?

  • +1

Yeah don't buy this. They had a 3080 Ti for not much more recently.

  • -1

Stupid price, will drop to $599 by the end of the year.

  • +3

Sounds bit silly to buy now.
You either buy it couple month ago so you can enjoy the card for a few month.
Or wait 1 or 2 month more to get a better price.

Why would anyone buy last gen card at last gen price when the new one just announced?

  • -3

4080 is 899 USD which is at least 2 times faster than 3080ti which will be around 1600 AUD

    • +1

      benchmark or your lying

      • before you bark why don't you check the event last night

        • +1

that's what cashvidia said - i wont believe it till I see it benchmarked - 2 x performance has never been accomplished before on next gen release

        • +2

Even NVIDIA's most dishonest marketers didn't say 2x, they said "up to 2x with DLSS 3".

It'll be somewhere around 1.3x to 1.6x faster in actual game performance, like every single other new GPU gen.

    • +3

Not even close, but nice try though

Unless you buy into Nvidia's apples to oranges comparison of the 4080 having the additional benefit of DLSS 3's Frame Booster.

Raw rasterisation performance is very similar.

    • Lol, got some magic beans for you….

    • +1

Yeah you might want to read the fine print. Most of those games weren't like for like comparisons which makes them bullshit. The 3090ti was using dlss 2.? performance while the 40 series was using dlss 3 which inserts frames which will raise the frame up artificially. The games with the biggest differences were dlss 3 vs native…. the ONLY games tested that are like for like because they dont have dlss were resident evil village, assassins creed valhalla, and the division 2. Did you not see the results ? Theyre the only results that are worth anything. The 408p 12gb was 10 percent slower in resident evil, and slightly under with the othee games. So good luck wity your theory or games being twice as fast. The 16gb version was 25 percent faster over all in those 3 games than the 3090ti which means the 16gb is over 30 percent faster than the 12gb model…the 12gb is a 4070 dont be fooled. The 4090 was the only good card thats 61 percent quicker than the 3090ti over all in those games. So at least that card has a chance at being twice as fast in the absolute best case scenarios. Nvidia is very sneaky, they also said the 3080 would be twice as fast as the 2080…which it is most definitely not lol believe everything you hear from a greedy company thats known for exaggerating

  • with all seriousness - there are no game out there that you need anything better then 3080 for - 4XXX money grab is just that - for nvidia fanboys that will pay the price but remember - there is no mining now to steal the supply - there is no way this will go over RRP like last time unless they keep supply low on purpose.
in any case - whoever upgrades from 3000 series and pay this has more $$ then sense

    • +1

Eh, not entirely true. Now you will be able to start pushing for high framerates (144hz or more) in 4k. If your monitor supports it of course. If you don't have a high refresh rate 4k monitor, then yes. Probably not worth.

      • thats so stupid - what game you need 144 + hz in 4k?
you only need high frame rates for competitive games, those you wont play in 4k

        • +2

It doesn't have to be competitive. Any FPS or TPS feels better to play at high refresh rates when using a mouse.

I never said 'need' either btw. All of this is a luxury.

        • You don’t need 4K 144Hz but it is nice to have

        • well, VR is one thing, you dont play it doesnt mean it dont exist.
144 should be the minimal goal nowadays regardless resolution unless on console.
i would if anything, daily tasks needs high HZ more than gaming in general. just scrolling, moving window around feels way better.

        • Some of us like Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077 to be played in all their graphical glorious.

    • +2

      VR says hi!

  • +2

what HODL tax am i paying?

  • +4

    RTX 4080 12GB = RTX 4070 + RTX 4080 perception tax

  • +1

One more time Jensun ffff the current users with 4xxx price performance and guess what, people still rush to make him richer…..lol

  • +1

As other have said, not a deal at this price.

If you pay this much you are willingly getting on your knees and taking a full load of electrons from daddy nvidia.

  • +2

    HODL

Don't let nvidia take ya ceno money that you have saved.

  • +3

I'm more interested in the used market. That's where the real value will be.

  • +11

Keep hodling this guys been trying to convince people to lose money for weeks now cause he must of paid double or triple the price for a outdated card lmao downvoted as well

  • +8

NVIDIA. Absolutely garbage of a company. The audacity to permanently jack up RRP. The audacity to make DLSS 3.0 exclusive to RTX 4000 series.

I'm jumping ship to Radeon. The hell with ray tracing.

  • I am expecting a 500 dollar 3070 card because of being told to HODL. The HODL people better deliver!

    • +3

There was a EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 sold on eBay today for $500, kind of bummed that I missed that. It's a used card though but still under warranty for 2 more years.

Unless if we get something that drives up GPU prices significantly again, it's not fantasyland to think that retailers would clear them out in future in that ballpark.

      • +2

Oh wow that was a good deal, hopefully 500 dollar 3070's become the normal on fb marketplace and such.

  • +3

I don't see this as a deal currently. There's still AMD RX7000 series coming out and the release of the 4000 cards in store around Oct 12. Unless you really really need a GPU, I'll wait.

  • +2

I am buying GPU only if it is reasonable price, or else I feel like an idiot let’s them change whatever they want. And I don’t mind AMD or Nvidia, price performance ratios more important.

  • +2

HODL. The new 4000 series RRP is priced to help clear 3000 series stock.

Can't see another shortage unless NV creates an artificial one; to which good luck since they have to keep producing them with their deal with TSMC. With cost of living going up the way they have been I'd like to see NV try to sell the cards at those prices at volume especially with consumers starting to wise up to what's going on. AMD will be releasing their cards soon too. Let's see how long they want to play chicken.

Also scum move to have a 4080 12GB so they could justify the stupid price increase of the true 3080 successor.

  • AMD Radeon 6850M XT 12GB GDDR6 is better and cheaper

    • +2

      ?

mobile(laptop) chip - how is that relevant to a desktop card

  • +7

If I sold bananas and had a big stockpile slowly turning black I would definitely tell people that the new stock was going to cost twice as much
And if people bought the soggy ones anyway, I definitely would charge twice as much for the new ones.

    • And there we have it, someone to explain to the children on how basic economics and business works. Good work.

      • IF people bought it. ALL of the bananas could also go bad and be thrown out and the seller realises he's priced them too high.

  • +2

still shitty prices. just because the new prices are even more sh***, doesn't make the old ones a steal. it also helps that there are 0 games that I'm interested in, in the next 6 month.

  • Here's the negativity again. Back when the gpu prices were high, a huge amount of people on here said how the pricing and market would not change in eight to ten years and only get worse. Then a few months passed after reading that and the GPU prices where falling fast. And suddenly all the negativity addicts vanished. They ran out of supply.

Now here they come! Back from hiding under their rocks. Saying how we can't expect anything thing good and we are simply victims of this situation without agency.

We determine our reality people. You might be right. The pricing might be less than ideal at first, vote with your wallets. Get the thing that's value for your hard earned money. There's lots of upcoming value. (Not this deal, but the used market is opening it's desperate floodgates)

I want to remind you of something. The market needs us more than we need it in this current climate. Mining is dead. 3xxx cards are falling like crazy on you used market. It's a good time to be alive GPU wise.

Break the negativity Nancy chains. And take action instead.

    • +2

3xxx cards falling like crazy? Maybe only on used but definitely not new.

Last I checked 3060 Ti has barely moved more recently. Radeon card of similar performance is still like 40% cheaper. Nvidia is treating us all like idiots. They need to clear old stock and they’re jacking prices even still.

  • 4000 series just announced, miners will sell a lot of cards soon, maybe better wait

  • +3

Curiously, looking at the negative votes for the deal itself…. For a new 3080 10GB, does this meet criteria of?

The deal is not the cheapest available
    Issue with product
    Issue with retailer

Doesn't seem like it, my guess is the HODL'ers (which I fully agree with the HODL sentiment) but the deal itself for a new product should meet those criteria for a downvote on the deal itself no? Downvote me and tell me what I'm missing here…

    • Issue with manufacturer? Nvidia is terrible
