So I bought a Kathmandu beach shelter. I'm not sure how to secure these poles to the shade? It doesn't seem to lock in place. Is it because you have to set it up on sand and doesn't work on solid ground?

The poles should just thread through the tent but I can't seem to get the ends stable
I've seen similar pole attachments on tents before and once setup the tension of the bent poles against the tent fabric holds the end in the hole. It's possible that's how your shelter works too

This is correct. Feed both poles through the fabric tunnel in the tent. Clip one pole in one end, walk to opposite corner and push the pole to create tension and create a crescent moon shape and put the pole into the hole to hold the tension in place. This can then lay flat on the ground.
Repeat process for the other pole but when doing it the tent wil pop up into shape

This is designed to be easy to pitch with at least two people and it does not pop up, the poles need to be put into place to set it up and ideally two people are needed for this.
The second picture shows how it works.
Just put the pole in the hole. From the limited pictures it looks like it should set up without being on sand.
Putting the average beach shelter back down is impossible however.
having a joke here OP, if you're finding it hard to assemble this even with diagrams and instructions, pls don't try an Ikea flatpack furniture item LOL
