Sharing Experience : Google Pixel 2 XL bulging battery

Hi all,

I have a 5 year old pixel 2 xl phone that this year had battery bulging. I was going to simply reset the phone and recycle.

Reached out to Google to check on the support options out of curiosity. They straight away offered to replace the phone with refurbished unit.

Sure it’s not receiving software updates. But I’m astonished they are replacing 5yr old phone for free.

Or.. is there a catch?

There is, in the fine print it says your first born will be named Sergey Brin

The catch is that it highlights that we have low standards of how long we expect electronics to last.

    • Indeed. Currently typing this from a phone made in 2018.

    • Low standards how?

I'm pretty sure a bulging battery will eventually explode.

    Makes sense.

    • Absolutely. I didn't intend to use bulged phone and as mentioned, was going to just recycle. I am surprised they are replacing a 5 year old out of warranty and out of software support phone for free.

      • Did they say they are sending you another Pixel 2 XL?

        • Yes it’s a refurbished 2xl

  • Great way for them to get rid of stock they have no intention of selling anyway whilst maintaining their customer service public image

  • I've still got a Pixel 2XL around, I'm gonna go check if the battery is bulging…
