    Was 399 few months ago

    • Costco was even less…..

    HODL!!!

  • +1

So 10th gen due out this month. Any known difference?

      • Thanks for that

Was wondering if to go with the new 10th gen or get a higher model in the air 256gb or Pro 11” 128gb but it’s more then double the price :(

    • I’m not sure too but it should be on Macrumors.

I’m guessing could be the form factor close to the iPad Pro and perhaps Face ID?

      • +1

I'm skeptical about that, they have really segmented iPad into a cheap device that is barebones and a much more polished version for twice the price.

Maybe A14, 4GB RAM, Apple Pencil 2 support.

    That camera bump

  • +6

I picked up a 7th Gen in the year of the pandemic, 2020. It was 128GB for less than 500$ from JBs (using gift cards for further discount) and it includes apple care warranty. 2 Gens later and they're still trying to push 64GB - with the price of memory and ssd storage = WTF! Why!? U can't do anything with 64GB let alone 128GB now - the OS takes a cut too.

    • +2

I understand complaining about piddly SSDs but 64GB is perfectly adequate.

      • +1

Actually no it isn't adequate for many! 128GB bare minimum IMHO. Some important points to note:
        * 64GB does not mean you have exactly that. Actual storage sizes will vary but it's always less than stated capacity, eg. could be 62GB maybe less
        * The OS uses space and although it may say it uses 'x' amount of GBs it does use more than stated. Eg. 8GBs stated might use 10GBs maybe 12GBs
        * In order to update the OS you will need free space for install process and update
        * You also can't use the entire stated storage capacity, it will slow down your system trying to fill it up completely
        * You can't store many apps/games on lower capacity ipads (Some will cache large amounts of data)
        * You can't store many photos or videos locally
        * You can't store much digital content (for offline use), this might include movies, music, magazines, books, etc

        • +1

i'm an avid ipad user and im happy with 64gb

        • +1

But 128GB isn't adequate for many either, neither is the 360GB, or the 920GB or the 2600000GB model 😝

I guess it comes down to selecting the right iPad for the right use case 🤯

    • +1

The OS on my iPad Air takes 8.1 GB.

      This isn't Windows.

I've used 16 GB iOS devices happily for years.

    • +3

so not sure if you read the news, but inflation is at 30 year highs…everything costs more now.

  • +2

    Waiting for another $399 deal

  • Bezels tho

  • IMO - better value with a second-hand/refurbed iPad Air or older Pro. Coming from an iPhone Pro 12/13/14, the entry level iPad is rubbish.

    • +4

I suppose it's all about choosing the device that meets your needs. Calling the the entry level iPad rubbish isn't very constructive because they're great for a lot of applications, but yeah if you're into gaming or anything fairly intensive an older pro would be the go

      • +1

It isgreat for kids and people who haven’t used recent iphones or current/previous gen ipad airs or pros. The screen is my main gripe as it is rubbish and makes the rest of the hardware & OS so much harder to use.

        • +1

Lots of people like the screen… and lots of them would be better off saving the $300 for an AirPod or something else.

  • +3

Would this be suitable for my son (4.5years old) to use for reading eggs app, stream Netflix and probably video games when he is a little older?

I'm hoping for this to last 4-5years if possible.

    • +3

I'd get a 5 yr old an ipad mini, and expect screen breakages, even with a case.

    • I'd say it'd be suitable. I bought 2x 8th gen 32gb iPads (previous model but v similar specs) for my girls 1.5 years ago. Aged 5 & 7 at the time.
They mainly used them for Yt kids and Netflix, but then the youngest got into gaming and with games like genshin impact being around 18gb, I needed to upgrade her to the 256gb 9th gen.
So imo, the hardware itself would be suitable and I'm sure you'd be able to manage with 64gb (by offloading apps etc), but I'd also consider the 256gb if you're the future proofing kind of guy.
      Good luck mate

      • yeah definitely want to future proof. I like this to last at least 4-5 years when it comes to tech.

the games is what I'm concerned about him not being able to use it for later but maybe that will deter him from playing games? maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

        • -1

How many games are you expecting your children to play regularly?

My son and his friends seem to have around 3 they play regularly, many of the other games filling up his storage are now seldom if ever used, I doubt he would miss them if they had to be deleted to free up space.

    • +3

We just bought one today (price matched at OW)… mainly for our 4.5yo to use.
We still have an older 3rd Gen 64GB that we have Osmo hooked up to full time… Mainly used by our now 7yo boy. But the 4.5yo will start to use it more as she's heading to school next year.
We also have an older 4th Gen 16Gb. But that's almost useless due to storage size. So that one will go.
Apart from a few apps, they use it for Reading Eggs, Decodable Readers, Teach Monster, and Hairy Phonics / Reading.
P.s. No issue with breakage at all between 4 kids, now 10 to 4.5, over the last 10 years! Just needs a good rugged cover and screen protector to make sure.

  • How is Microsoft 365 on Apple these days?

Decent for a bit of word processing, spreadsheeting, websurfing and youtube when on the go?

    • +1

I'd say it's fine if you want basic formatting and you have an external keyboard?

      • +1

Cheers bud… yeah, I have an external bluetooth keyboard. My bro has the same one that his used with his ipad mini.

I had a look at a few vids on youtube and yeah, the formatting options are very basic indeed.

My main reason for considering this (besides the price) is that my wife likes using Apple and I've never owned anything Apple so doing tech support for her is a pain. Other than that, I'd be using it to replace my 7yo Acer Switch. Not sure how I'd feel about basic functions in Office applications though. Will need to think about it.

        • I'd say wait for the 10th Gen later on this month and you might like it even more ;)

          • +1

            @davidtse916: Probably won't be getting a 10th gen.

With interest rate hikes and our house build still in progress, $400 is about all I can put aside for this "luxury".

            • @Mugsy: Im sure you can find a brand new 9th Gen on sale when the 10th Gen is out. Im planning to get the 9th Gen on sale too ;)

  • +1

Not a bad price, but can we expect this model to be cheaper with the newer 10th Gen being released this month?

    • +2

It's been $399 before so I think we can expect a cheaper price for remaining stock… just depends how much stock there is with the stores that do the discounting.

    • +1

If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait.
We only jumped because we're heading OS next week and will claim the GST back.

      • FWIW, read they are cracking down on this, to get the GST back (TRS refund) the item isn't supposed to come back with you into Australia.

        • +1

It won't come back 'with me'. 😉
