    • Should get a Dell laptop

    Does this work with macbook?

      From previous thread

      Functionality
The Dell Thunderbolt Dock with v1.0.14.1 update (which includes NVM43 firmware) was certified by Apple through an independent third-party laboratory to work with Apple USB-C hosts. The known functionality provided by the dock when connected to an Apple USB-C host is outlined below.

APPLE USB-C HOST EXTERNAL DISPLAYS PORT FUNCTIONALITY
      MacBook Pro, MacBook Air w/
Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports Up to Dual 4K@60Hz*
Up to Single 5K@60Hz Thunderbolt, USB & Ethernet

    • Yes. This is Dell's page on the topic:

      https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000124312/dell-thun…

      I'm using it with a M1 MBP -

      • Limited to 90w pd
      • Second monitor connected to Thunderbolt port with a usb-c addapter
      • I'm doing the same but the monitor connected via the TB port is rarely 4k@60Hz. Most of the time it is only 4k@30Hz.

Sometimes it will detect at 60Hz if I reboot.

If I connect the monitors directly to the MBP ports using the same cables they are both 60Hz.

Here is an article by Dell support explaining in great detail how the WD19 works
        https://www.dell.com/community/Latitude/Demystifying-Dell-WD…

        • Have you tried a firmware update?

I'm running two 1440p monitors. I haven't bothered checking the refresh rate yet. Dual 4K is a potential future upgrade for me.

@ihfree: Yes I have the latest firmware. I’m sick of trying to get it to work reliably and just accepted that the second display will be 30Hz. This is on a MBP M1 Pro

I should say, if I connect my dell latitude via TB then both displays are 4k@60Hz. Exactly the same cable connections.

  • Hi Froot Loops, thanks for putting this up. We've added some more units to our eBay page and an express option is now available. For compatibility questions either look at the previous thread or email us at [email protected] as we have been testing these units for some time.

    • Hi, I can only see normal post still. Do these also work with the Intel NUC M15 (LAPBC710). TIA

      • Hi Froot Loops, we have not tested the dock with that laptop. However, from our experience most laptops running Thunderbolt 3/4 will work with the dock. We have tested the dock with the following laptops:

        Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 9
        Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 6
        Dell XPS 13 9010
        Macbook Pro M1
        Macbook Pro (Intel)
        Lenovo T14
        Dell Lattitude 5030

The biggest challenges seem to be when using Mac's, as you are limited to just 2 displays.

Please check out Dell's compatibility guide for further info: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-au/000125885/usb-and-u…

  • How many screens can it output to?

    • 4

      DP 1.4 + DP 1.4 + MFDP Type-C + TBT Type-C

      • All at the same time? Usually it states how many simultaneous output.

I would suggest to buy HP G2 which is much cheaper…

    • +1

How is is ‘much cheaper’. That also looks to be around ~$330?

    • Yeah I picked up an HP G2 TB dock a few years back for $150 off Facebook, was a serious bargain!

Hot tip, you can easily replace the captive thunderbolt cable that comes with it by removing a single screw on the base. Means you can swap in a longer cable, and ditch the added barrel power connector that I assume is for HP laptops that don’t charge over TB.

  • I learned the hard way that the cheaper no brand options always fail. Better to buy a refurb Dell or HP through ebay. Had zero issues since I did so.

  • +2

I’ve used these Dell docks at work. Nothing but problems.

    • What sort of issues do you have?

    • +1

we had 500+ of them one placed i worked and they are pretty good.
only issues we had was people breaking cable ends or removing the display link driver

  • Thanks got one! Hopefully get 2 external monitors on my M1 soon via Displaylink

  • Probably a dumb question but can dell docks have thier firmware updates from a non dell computer? I would like to update the dell dock I'm using with a HP laptop but if one can't apply firmware updates to the dock not interested.

  • Does anyone know if these come with a 180W power supply or not? If not, does this power supply fit? TIA

Edit: It's seeming like it does Chapter 2: what's in the box, but if someone can confirm it comes with the power brick and cord, that would be great.

    • Hi Froot loops,

The unit comes with a 130w power supply. One of the Dell docks does come with a 180w power supply - WD19DCS. However it requires two USBC/Thunderbolt cables to be inserted into your laptop.

    • The one I received from the previous deal has a 180W power brick.

      Dell's page also mentions 180W.
      https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/dell-thunderbolt-dock-w…

      • Hi Ihfree,

You are correct, we made an error, it is a 180w power brick.

  • Think this might work for my laptop,

    Running a Razer blade 2020,
Got a 4K monitor and 2k on usb c connections and then a 1080 on hdmi.
    Would the dock support this?

Don’t think the Razer supports usb c charging.

So confusing to figure out if it all works!

    • Hi Arthurdoy,

From the spec's we have reviewed it is likely to work.

Could you send us an email? [email protected]

Depending on where you are located, we may be able to organise a test for you.

  • I still dont know why these docks can do 8k 60hz, but wont give you 4k 120.
