Built-In real-time Currency Converter and their latest exchange rates.

    Developer claims:
BEST FEATURES OF UNIT CONVERTER APP (Pega Pro)
✓ Built-In real-time Currency Converter and their latest exchange rates.

    Rubbish!
Exchange rates not updated since 2018!!
App not updated in over 3 years!

Who'd pay $12.99 for an unsupported app?

    • -4

Even when you get told an exchange rate, you go to your preferred exchange provider and they all have their own exchange rates + fees anyway. so what is even the point

      • +3

Knowing exchange rate, helps you figure out costs buying from online overseas retailers

        • +2

Yes. Most would want the use you suggest. Either for purchases online in another currency, or to know costs for travelling overseas.

Think dbmitch was talking about exchange of physical currencies for travel. In decades of travel, I rarely did that. But some places had no ATM, requiring us$ on entry.

But this app only gives the exchange rate for 29/6/2018…
Free reliable exchange rate apps are available. Don't use this!!

          • +2

@INFIDEL: I wish the App gave me AU$ exchange rate for 2013-2014.
I would have loved seeing that again.

            • +1

@whyisave: Many places to look up currency history. Why those years?
Just make your own basic app with that exchange rate - to live in the glorious past🕑

While travelling overseas years ago, the au$ crashed against the Japanese ¥. Just had to live with 40% of budget gone. But am a lucky traveller. Hitchhiking & camping in rural & remote Japan to limit costs, was given us$200 in 1 lift & so much free hospitality!
Was a great trip. But don't want to revisit those exchange rates!!

              • @INFIDEL:

                Why those years?

                AU$ 1 = US$ 1.05 - 0.95

                AU$ crashed against ¥en ?
                which year?
In last 10 years, the most obvious "crash" is 2020.

                • +1

@whyisave: Earlier than that I guess. My 2020 flight was cancelled! Travelled there most years between 2007-17.
Japanese would sympathise with me about the poor exchange rate on that 1 trip, when they realised I was an Aussie. (au$1 = approx 60+¥ for a short time) But I remember the travels better than the exchange rate!

Took a speed boat to a tiny island off Malaysia with few facilities. Realised I had too much local currency. It was far cheaper than expected. Exchanged it for us$ to help others at Mastercard rate. Otherwise they paid a us$10 fee & got poor exchange rate.
Travelled on to Myanmar with that wad of us$ I needed @au$1.05. Felt like a rich person. Probably around your favourite years.

                  • +1

@INFIDEL: Yeah, I got ¥60+ in .JP several years earlier than 2007,
and it cost me a pretty penny, with the JR Pass going from Fukuoka, Nagasaki -> Tokyo,
after catching a ferry across from .KR

My favourite years were actually a few years after my .MM trip ,
ie. 2013-2014 USA when the AU$ was strongest, so that was my benchmark for a strong AU$.
Otherwise, the AU$ was not so bad, in other parts of the world.

2013-2014 was also the same year, when I did buy stuff online
especially 2nd hand specialist equipment, in US$ online from USA and and also not pay GST.

Anyway, this sub-thread is getting all tangential now,
as we reminisce B.C. travels, ie. Before Covid :-\

If exchange rates haven’t been updated why is the OP advocating this app?

      • +2

My thought every time this app is promoted (about every 3 months)!

Very easy not to mention exchange rate "feature", rather than copy / paste & make it the first benefit of the app!!

Upvoted this Unit Converter when I first saw it free nearly 4 years ago. Tried it. Uninstalled. (Can install again free if needed.)
        Have warned about it since.

And the developers still sell it normally at a high price, despite the "BEST FEATURE" not functioning for years!!

Free is just to promote the app as popular - to buyers later at normal price. So a bit of a con!

      • [Update] exchange rate "feature" now ruled through by Mod!

    • Sorry, you're right. I shamelessly copied description from last time it popped up without fact checking. I never use the currency feature to realize. :(

      • +2

You're not the first to do that😉

The real problem lies with the developers who haven't updated the app in years, or removed that claim & lowered the usual price!

Interest in this app (when free) can convince others that it is worth the full price. It isn't!

        • I'm sorta surprised they haven't fixed it. Seems like a very popular app and it's got tons of features. Why no currency update though. Confused.

          • @noshopping: Would be very easy for developers to remove the faulty currency conversion & leave the other features. (And drop price.)

Its not necessary, requires constant updates, doesn't really fit with other conversions. And some like you don't even use it.

There are plenty of good currency conversion apps - free. Its a tool I regularly use, unlike most tools on this app.

    Or just google it?

  • +1

Went to install it now, google asks me if i want to enable it. Lol, must have installed last time it was free on here and I've never used it…

  • Great app. Have had it on phone for awhile now

    • Even though the exchange rate in the app hasn't been updated since 2018 as what the OP claims?

      That could be an issue.

  • Thanks OP.

Everyone knows google is a thing right? And I bet it loads quicker than this app

    • Could possibly be handy if no internet (eg Travelling overseas).
      I usually use Google otherwise.

I downloaded this last time it was free, like 6 months ago, and opened it once… then tried to find the conversion type and pair I was after… it took me about 20-30 seconds. Maybe useful if you use multiple ALL the time, otherwise it's way fast just googling IMO

  • The Smart Tools look handy - can anyone advise if the Ruler and Bubble Level are accurate?

    • The Ruler Tool just shows a ruler on the long edge of your phone screen. I lined it up with a physical ruler and they matched perfectly.

Bubble Level Tool seems accurate, however, it depends on the gyroscope in your phone so that will vary between phones.

  • If anyone wants an app for iOS Convertible is excellent. I’m not sure if it’s free or if I just got it on special.

  • I got this last time it was free. It's awesome! Used it for my recent uni assignment
