PS5 Start up noise

Hey
Just noticed this only today. When you start up your PS5 and it beeps, right after the beep the disc drive makes a noise like a spin or something.

There is no disc in the PS5

Sounds like this but not as loud

This normal?
Anyone else have this sound?

As I said before, I’ve never noticed it until today
Thanks

No noise from disc reader when starting mine with no disc inserted. I wouldn't worry about it though.

  • Just strange I’ve never heard it before

I never use the disc drive as most of my games are digital but still wondering

  • Maybe its trying to boot from the disc drive?

    • Nah I don’t think that’s the case.

  • The PS5 spins the disk drive for no reason at all so frequently I have to make sure I never have a disk in there unless I’m using it. It spins up for 30 odd seconds when I start the YouTube app and randomly at other times. I used to just leave whatever solo story game I was playing in the drive whilst I played other online games or digital downloads, but nope, I can’t do that anymore.

Frankly I think this is disgusting behaviour by Sony - they are wearing out my Optical drive for no good reason. Whether it is gross incompetence or a deliberate attempt to shorten my system lifespan, it’s just disgusting.

We had a system update a couple of days ago, so who knows what they changed. But maybe it was enough to make you notice.

    • So yours too is making this same sound on startup after the beep?

      • If you have the console vertical, as in the video try start up in horizontal to see if it stops the noise. It sounds like the gears in the drive are returning the optical laser to home and are not entirely aligned.

        • After reading more I found a whole reddit thread on it and everyone said it was normal as they are all experiencing it. One user thought it was an issue and sent it away to Playstation and when he got it back it still was making the same sound.

I also asked a mate of mine who has a PS5 and his does it too and has been since he bought it

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Most optical drives make a bit of noise momentarily, when when not in use. It shouldn't "wear out" that quickly either. The OG disc player in my vehicle is 15 years old and still going strong. I also have a working ps1.
