UK routers are cheaper but missing Australian 5ghz bands.

This needs to be noted on all UK router posts.
UK routers have lower transmission power limits as well.

  • NBN compatible?

  • I have the big brother RT-AX88u and can highly recommend it. I have at least 25-30 clients connected everyday with 4x CCTV recording 24/7 via WIFI without any hiccups, considering it's stored inside a cupboard in the garage in a 2 story house, performance is not bad. Only thing I couldn't figure out is the VPN side, wireguard and openvpn doesn't seem to work on my phone.

    • Highly recommend you check out Merlin's Firmware for the asus routers. much much better than the stock.

      • Yeah I've used merlin in my previous Asus router, love it but I was having issue with RAM not enough when turning on VPN. I haven't tried it yet with RT-AX88u as the stock firmware satisfies my need at the moment.

        • hmmm from reports that i read i hear it runs flawlessly with the 88u. I have the 68u and i definitely don't get full speeds using WiFi, caps out at ~30mbps but this is cause of the CPU limitation. RAM usage on merlin seems to allocate quite nicely. Im just waiting for the 86u/88u's to drop in price to upgrade my router.

  • waiting for the AX86u to drop under $300

I have this one from the prime day sales, it was pretty rock solid for a month or so, then started playing up… it's needed four restarts in the past week alone due to the wifi dropping out… I've given it a factory reset, but same issues straight away. I have about 50 clients connected, mostly lights, switches, sensors, TV's, phones etc… I'm guessing I've passed its client limit…

Not sure about stock firmware but i have the 68u running merlin's firmware and has an option to restart the router on a schedule. I do it 3 times week at like 3am.

      • Stock firmware also has this option. I restart weekly.

        • Yeah stock firmware does it too. Whats the main difference between that and stock firmware btw?

          • @H8Pootin: Yeah right, haven't used stock in such a long time.
Merlin Firmware, just has a lot more tweaks and fixes compared to the stock. Lots more customisation and just those little things that just make it all round better.
You kinda have to use to get the idea.
Personally I used for the more VPN features and options it has as compared to the stock.

Probably the other thing as well developer actually listens to it's users and pushes out updates probably quicker/sooner than what Asus do…

    • Dual Core with 50+ clients, I'd say you're pushing it a bit.

    • Mine has been doing the same lately, might be the firmware
