There is no way I could run a marathon but the way you phrased it, I will run every kilometre just to get my money’s worth.

    • That's the OzB spirit!

  • +14

Wait you have to pay to run a marathon?

    • I never understood why anyone would pay to run or walk, ^ this, city2surf, etc.

      • +14

You wouldn't understand if you're not a runner

        • -1

If you mean hanging a ribbon in the lounge room than yeah, I don't run for that. I hike and don't need recognition, but i guess i have to pay for some national parks so maybe its similar concept

        • +6

Never saw Forrest Gump pay for running

      • +3

I've done it a couple of times not paying - just walking along with the crowd. No bib so I felt uncomfortable to get drinks along the way but BYO water and noone will care.

        • community, corporate team bonding, friends and family activity
        • personal improvement, achievement or aspiration
        • mental and physical health
        • the opportunity to run on roads that would normally be closed off with support/insurance event
        • raise awareness and support of charities
        • support for local economy

I do not think the above covers all the benefits anywhere this and similar events have for both the community and individual.

      • I thought it was for charity?

    • +1

Because that is what masochists do.

    • +3

Pays for the prize money and event coordination. Also, more importantly, covers all the insurances needed to run an event like this.

      • -1

What about all the sponsorship? When everyone gets their participation’medal’ it’ll have Blackwoods all over it for life

    • +1

You don't have to pay to run a marathon, you have to pay to run a race. That being said, it's unlikely you'll find a flat bit of land to run 42.2km without interruption if you're looking for a PB.

  • Any chance of a code for the Half Marathon?
I really didn't want to do another half marathon right after I finished this year's one.

    • +8

Sorry only have the code for the full. You could sign up as the full and perhaps downgrade it later on? There is a $10 fee to change so you could signup for $52.20 after you apply the event change fee.

      • +6

That's a mad idea! Thanks! My wife is set on the half…
But I think my ozbargain cheapness has convinced me to train for the full marathon!

        • +1

You just gotta wait for the alphaflys to go on sale now and you'll be set.

  • +6

You want me to PAY to run???

What kind of world is this…

  • +9

$1 for every km run on the day

Looking forward to a partial refund when I pass out at 20km mark.

  • $1 per km? Will Uber price match that?

    • +26

You are paying for participating in a race, with support/water stations, etc, and closed roads around one of the most scenic cities in the world, plus finisher medal, etc… The exercise part is free.

        • +7

Yeah it is lmao. What is your point?

            • +11

@Ham Dragon: You also think vaccines are dumb so your opinions seem to be consistently bad takes

            • +2

@Ham Dragon: If something you did was hard enough (I don't like running so I would consider doing a marathon an accomplishment) I would be happy getting a little award/participation trophy, if just to remind me when I'm old and senile that I did something with my bag of bones at some point

              • -5

@SpainKing: That's fair enough, what I'm getting at is the overabundance of pay-to-run/exercise events…colour run, night run, neon run, full moon run, stair climb etc etc. There's plenty of free or low cost (Hash House Harriers or Parkun) alternatives.

                • @Ham Dragon: That's true, but it's a bit like dancing on your own or at the local RSL (I assume?) vs going to the biggest coolest dance party that everyone is taking about. You can still crash for free if you want to - I've done it.

      • +2

Don't forget a finishers t-shirt as well. I think for this price it is a steal.

        • -7

Ahh so you can mog on other lesser mortals who are unlikely to GAS that you participated. A bargain is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.

        • …. If you finish

      • I’m sure the sponsorship money would cover all your points

    • +2

Sounds like you've never trained for something as difficult as running a marathon.

      • -3

Am I meant to feel inadequate or something?

    • who asked?

    • +2

I pay for the experience. Yes I can run 42km by myself. But you cant beat the experience of running with 25K+ people.

Its like "yes I can cook food at home but id rather eat out once in a while."

      • It's more like cooking with 25k+ people

  • +4

True OzB tip: join any road race for free by sneaking into the starting line or running alongside the course and then jumping in

    • Pro tip: jump in near the end, far enough ahead of the person coming first that they won't pass you before the end, and take all of the glory.

I'm sure they'll figure it out soon enough, so recommend slinking away soon after crossing the finish line.

      • -1

Another tip - find someone's race number from a prior year and pin that on. In the SMH half I noticed one of the runners had a 2019 number on. The colours were pretty much the same so no one questioned it.

  • Thanks OP! I just signed up for some severe punishment next September!

  • +1

It should be call "Toll fee run"

  • +3

I did the half marathon this year and was a good experience overall. Only complaint was lack of toilet facility at the start 25k+ runners and (profanity) all portaloos.

    • +1

Clearly you're not paying enough for your marathons

  • +1

perfect placement before Domino Pizza voucher posting :)

  • +2

this was the sign I needed to man up & run a marathon

  • Couldn’t you go outside and start moving forward for free?!

  • Anyone else misread this is as Red Rooster?

  • Any idiot can run, but it takes a special kind of idiot to run a marathon.Only real (not a joke) idiot pay others to run

  • How do you sign up for this? Website price is still at super early bird?

    • +1

Sign up as normal and fill it out and there should be a "enter coupon /code" option at the bottom. Price should come down $42.20.

  • wow thanks for that!!! awesome discount

  • +2

wow, fuming, just got 2 tickets for the HM for me and my sister.

  • thanks, looking forward to it

watched the marathon this year… the course is atrociously narrow (compared to other major marathons), hate to say there's no way Sydney will become a marathon major

  • +5

I love ozbargain and I love a half marathon… But buyer beware… I got the email and as I read this you will get stung for whatever price the half,10k etc plus $10 if you switch.

Please note any changes to your entry, including changing event categories to the Blackmores Half Marathon, Blackmores Bridge Run or Blackmores Family Fun Run, will be subject to the pricing period at the time of request plus an additional $10 race change fee.

    • +3

Ah crap. Now I’m going to have to run the Marathon.

      • +2

Marathon is Greek for fennel, as the battle was fought in a field where lots of fennel grew.

  • +1

What charity/foundation/sect are you we getting richer this time so they can help themselves?

  • +2

Quite a few bad takes in the comments, but this is a bargain considering the price without the promo code.

  • +2

Had registered paying the super early bird price of $125 before i got sent this code. Emailed the organisers asking if i could cancel and register again with this discount code. Got refunded $82.60 back :)

    • @Brbatov lucky that you’ve got your refund for the difference! Would you mind to send me the screenshot of their email offering the refund? I might request this too! Thanks!

    • That's quite good and I'm surprised by that - they were absolute pricks to deal with when I was injured one year and chasing a refund.

  • I've entered. Looking forward to seeing all the ozb racing.

  • Has anyone successfully downgraded to the half by paying only $10?

noted the earlier buyer beware note

    • nvm .. entered. work it out later - haha

      regardless, Thanks OP!

  • What about for asthmatics, my partner's complaining.

    • Yes they can still get the discounted entry to the full marathon.

  • +2

I was going to sleep on it, but it looks like this might expire tonight.

Signed up.. can be next years problem

  • Please note: A $10 administration applies to any event changes.

Any race changes processed before 31 July 2023 will receive a refund for the difference in entry fees. Any changes after this date will not receive a refund.

I'm reading this and have so many ideas. Does anyone know if they would really refund the difference between FM and HM?

    Signed up btw. Amazing price.

  • Bugger I missed this

  • Missed as well..anyone have another working code ?

  • Darn! I hope they have another offer…anyone have any?

  • If anyone here who has buyer’s remorse and want to transfer their entry to me at cost, message me.

  • If anyone wants to transfer their ticket message me :)

    • Hi, I don’t think your settings let me direct message you. I have a ticket up for grabs, feel free to DM me

  • So about a week after taking advantage of this deal, I managed to full tear my ACL and am now looking at surgery early next year plus 12 month’s rehab post-surgery. If anyone would like to take advantage of my entry at cost, please message me

    • I’ve DM’d you if it’s still avail
