Nice find . Price match Officeworks $474

    • This one vs Note 20 Ultra 5G? Which one has better hardware?

      • +2

The Note 20 was flagship tier, it would be better if you can get one for $474 that is.

The screen, 5G modem etc all better on the Note 20.

        https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=11268&idPhone…

      • 20 series exynos are 7nm, and have notoriously bad battery life and overheating. So bad, people still avoid exynos 2 generations later. I would strongly recommend holding out for a 21 series phone

    • Will Officeworks price match?

    • No

      • Confirming Officeworks won't price match.

  • Is this much if an upgrade from OnePlus 6?

    • Camera & 5G would be the most noticeable upgrades.

    • +1

Yes, having upgraded Mrs BJReplay, it is. A much better phone. 5G, much better camera, generally faster. She does complain that it is a bit laggier opening some apps, and I think she is right - OnePlus did have a lower bloat firmware. I can't convince her to swap launcher, though which I'm sure would help ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • +1

Go through and disable or uninstall any apps which won't be used.

I think that would have more impact than changing launcher. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        • Samsung's "deep sleeping apps" is also useful, disables background processes.

    • +2

I recently did this and overall it's a good upgrade.
Screen is great, has dual speakers, 5G, camera handles motion a bit better, awesome battery life.
Negatives are it's a bit stuttery until you tweak it, no 4k 60fps recording, no 3pos volume switch, DJI app doesn't like it yet so I keep my OnePlus 6 in its travel bag.

      • What's wrong with the DJI app for it? Is it a Samsung problem or A53 problem? Cheers for the info

        • +1

The app pauses the video stream when you hit record at 4k 30fps. I've heard you can get around it by dropping to 24fps until they update the app but I want to keep my recordings consistent.
This issue seems to be common with new phones, it's not just the A53

  • This or the Motorola edge 30 5G?

    • +3

      Snapdragon® 778G+ 5G processor
      Ultra-smooth 144 Hz display

      Motorola on specs is better.

      Motorola at $474 though?

      • Thanks @checkingthisout. That was really helpful. I have an unopened Motorola which I bought from JB ar their 50% off sale and wondering if this phone is better. It is for my Mum. The one thing I am still not sure is if this phone is better than the Motorola in terms of the Android and security updates.

        • -1

Bloody OZB removed my comment, it showed how to get the S22 for little to nothing.

          • @checkingthisout: Intrigued..Send me a pm…

          • +4

            @checkingthisout: From a Nigerian prince?

          • +1

            @checkingthisout: Hey Mate,

It seems your PM's are disabled, care to share about S22 details!

          • @checkingthisout: Thanks @checkingthisout. I did consider the iPhone for her but my Mum is already using an Android phone and does not like to switch to a different OS.

          • +3

@checkingthisout: It was price match with Amazon to get the phone down from $1049 to $949. Then you use the JB hifi $350 deal that is currently going on + the hand in price of a device + a S22 coupon someone was selling in the forums. If I traded in a pixel 6 for example, it would be in the order of $100 or so. $949 phone - $350 + $300 for pixel 6a (pick your phone) + coupon from seller $350 = $0 or pay the difference without their coupon (You can also use any phone and not hand it in, getting the coupon and the phone credit for free upfront, you need to pay the phone credit back later)

But I can't post it for some reason, because it was a referral? It wasn't… It was just JB, Amazon and OzB links.

Effectively the phone could be gotten for a $100-200

            • @checkingthisout: Can you put it in Pastebin then share the Pastebin code

            • +1

@checkingthisout: Have u actually tried this? The coupon selling on classified I believe is a trade-in code, the same as the $350 u mentioned that u’d generate for trade-in. I don’t think u can use 2 trade-in coupon in 1 transaction

            • +1

@checkingthisout: Where would you purchase from? JB? I highly doubt they'd accept that level of stacking.

              • @wombat81: It's on JB S22 website, if I did my iPhone 12 mini right now, and didn't use someone else cash coupon, I'd be out of pocket only $239. The same can be done on the S22 +, Z folds etc

JB Hifi would give me $710 or near because of the $350 bonus. Almost what I paid for it brand new.

There are other phones that would pay more than the 12 mini.

That is a pretty good deal, considering they're paying well over what I would get on Facebook marketplace or gumtree. You can get much much more on a better phone.

        • +4

Think Samsung will get you 4 years of OS updates + 1 year security, Motorola will do 2 years OS + 2 years security.

          • @cmdbash: Thank you @cmdbash.

          • @cmdbash: you mean 5 years security from Samsung yeah ?

        • +2

Samsung better for updates, but Motorola will have better processing power.

        • +1

          Stock android on Motorola.

      • Software isn't.

    • +3

The Edge 30 Pro is much better value at $499.
Yes, I realise it isn't $499 now but it will be again.

  • +2

Just something to note was that the A53 received some criticism compared to the previous A52s for what was seen as a drop in features and specs. Still a nice phone, but personally I chased up an A52s in preference and its been great as a mid tier phone (My first after having all the flagships for the last 10 years thought I'd try cheaper).

    • +7

The Samsung S10+ was a great flagship for its time, and many still look at it fondly as an ex-flagship. This A52-S is actually superior to the S10+ in all ways except one (USB 3.0 DeX support).

I concur the A53 came with a price hike, downgraded processor, and the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack. It's a straight downgrade.

      • +1

Hold on now, I have to nitpick this a wee bit. Though it's a better bet than an s10 overall, it's not superior in every single way. According to GSMarena's comparison page, a few examples being the S10 having a superior screen resolution (550 vs 405 PPI), Better main camera video recording capabilities, guaranteed 8GB ram (A52s and A53 flactuate depending on the SKU) IP68 vs IP67, slightly better screen to body ratio and so on. Sorry I had to be that guy lol.

        • +1

          Lmao.
          https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=11268&idPhone…

Yeah, but the new screen is more efficient, brighter, and 120Hz. It's also flat, which looks and feels better, is sturdier and can use Glass Protectors. The plastic backplate is more shock-resistant than the glass backplate. It comes with 5G support. The QSD 778 is slightly faster and more efficient. Bigger battery and faster charging. Selfie camera is way better. The camera system is very close to the S10+ but slight edge to the A52-S which is slightly behind the S20fe. Support wise the A52s has an extra 2-Years over the S10+.

          More bad stuff:
No reverse wireless charging, in fact, no wireless charging at all. The Loudspeaker is not as loud. No FM Radio integrated into the Headset Jack. Video recording is similar but no 4K/60 option (unless use hacks). It weighs more, it's thicker, wider and longer.

But yeah, we're splitting hairs here. Both are good flagship devices.

  • +5

Unless you need the SD slot, hard to go past the s22 for 588

  • Are these phones network locked? I dont see anything mentioned in Telstra page

    • +1

      nope

  • +1

Nice find OP. Android phones are super confusing to me at the moment, can I ask a silly question, why/what justifies the price premium for something like the pixel 7 vs this phone? on paper the specs or sort of similar but the reviews keep placing the pixel with flagships and this as a mid-tier. What am I missing?

    • +1

That's like saying, why is this Ferrari so much more than this Suzuki?

They both have 4 wheels and a steering wheel and they look like cars.

      • I appreciate the sentiment from an automotive perspective, just can't understand it from a phone perspective. For context, last time I bought a phone for myself it was the OnePlus 7T Pro and there was a clear differentiator in specs, refresh rate (OnePlus had 90hz everyone else 60hz), processor etc. Now not so much. Even in automotives I would argue its more differentiated from a specs perspective, in the case of a Ferrari, you expect a big V12 or some bells and whistles you can't find in a Suzuki…..so just confused.

        • -2

This is purely a mid-range phone, you can't compare it to a high-end phone (I refuse to call the pixel 7 a flagship when it gets only 3 years of OS updates).

          The pixel 6a is comparable.

          • -1

@GTR12: iPhones get 5-Year support. The best Android Phones get 3-Years support. "Lower Flagships", ex-flagships, and Midrange Android Phones only get around 1-2 Years support. While Low-end and Entry Budget Android Phones get between 0-1 Year of support.

I can make a list of best Android Phones throughout history if anyone is interested.

            • +1

@Kangal: Nope, this phone and other phones from Samsung will get 4 OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates.

              • +1

@GTR12: I'm talking about actual software (platform) updates from manufacturers like Samsung. That's what people are most keen on.

A lot of the security updates actually come from Google since they've integrated a lot of framework into Google Play Services and separated out of the base operating system. The reason why we don't get much platform updates is because Qualcomm stops providing kernel revisions for new Linux/Android builds after 2 or 3 Years. It's why Samsung is able to compete with their Exynos alternatives, and why Google became frustrated and decided to ditch them.

If I included security updates, it would make even some Cheap Chinese Phones look good, which kind of disingenuous.

                • +1

@Kangal: It will get Android 16. 4 platform (OS) upgrades.

                  • @GTR12: You're right, I didn't see their new revision.

It was an unpromised roughly 2-Years for their S6-S9 lineup. Then they marketed it as 3-Year promised updates for S10-S21. Then they launched the S22 and Fold series with an extended 4-Year updates. And now they've included S21, A73, and Tablets for that same 4-Years commitment but I didn't notice that change.

So while the inferior A53 will get platform updates to 2026/v16, the more superior A52-S will only get platform updates until 2024/v14. Still, I think the A52-S is the smarter buy because by that time, it would be worth upgrading as we will have something worthwhile to upgrade to (true-3nm TSMC, Cortex-A730, bigger battery, better cameras etc).

                    https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-android-updates-114…

    • +3

nothing much really, the more you pay, the less you seem to get feature wise.
Oh wait, you do get the shiny brand name and apparent bragging rights.
Just get any android phone under $500 and it will do the job for 99% people.

      • Exactly this.
        Well said 👏

      • Yeah I'm sure people who are out all day will appreciate a battery that can't last. Or people who take lots of pics will appreciate a phone that produces a blurry mess. If you're too lazy to shop for what you need and check out reviews, you'll end up with problems.

    • +1

      Absolutely nothing.
I would never spend over $500 on an Android phone.

    • +2

Since no one has really made an attempt to answer your question, flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S series, top pixel models etc get the best processors and are therefore more powerful. That means they can also handle higher levels of graphics. They generally have better camera sensors and often better and higher resolution screens. They are also often constructed from higher quality materials eg glass, instead of plastic.

For example, the Galaxy A series phones have relatively low processing power compared to Galaxy S.

Having said that, as others have said, a phone such as this will be fine for most people. If you want to do mobile gaming, or high quality photography or video etc, you might be better off with a flag ship.

  • -1

It seems like you need to also sign up for an upfront data plan to get this offer???

    • If that is the case a prepaid SIM is $2.

  • These mid ranges looking goood

  • -1

Has anyone actually bought this phone from this deal, and did you also need to buy a data plan with it?

    • Not this deal, but I activated a $2 sim to get a Telstra account, bought the phone and closed account.

      • -2

Unless someone else can tell me otherwise I strongly suspect this deal is impossible to get at this price.
It very much looks like you need to buy a data plan with it at additional cost.

    • Literally says

      Min cost: $499
If you already have a service with us, you can buy outright without adding a plan.

      • -3

Please point to the section of the deal description that says this.

        • Click on Outright, and underneath that is says "Min cost: $499 If you already have a service with us, you can buy outright without adding a plan."

          • @RangaWal: Most people here now have Prime - and everyone knows by now the Amazon rules for free postage - but Ozbargain titles still need to specify on Amazon deals that you only get free shipping with Prime or over a certain spend.
This deal only has this price if you already have a Telstra service - and yet that is not disclosed in the title, or the description.

  • What exactly is "Awesome" about these colours?

  • Not that this is a bad deal, but the A33 5G for $349 on Telstra Day was better.

    • +3

Cool. Can you tell us all the deals that were better but no longer exist?

      • -2

        No, just the relevant ones.

  • +2

I don't want to rag on this phone too much, as it's a good phone, but if you're looking for multi-app use without lag (really frustrating), don't buy this phone. I find it to be slow as molasses.

The Moto Edge 30 as someone mentioned earlier would be a better buy for similar money.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Perfect timing as I needed one for a family member. Got it from Officeworks for $474 (thanks @Regie69 for the reminder about Price Beat).

    • How did you manage this? I've tried twice and got told no straight away both times.

      • I just asked if they could price beat Telstra and it was approved. I've done it a few times already and at the same store.

        • Oh OK, I tried over the phone which may have been the issue.

          • +1

@Fabio08: I price matched with officeworks too.. in store

  • Grabbed one for the boss. Cheers.

  • This or Motorola g82 5G?

  • So many upvotes? It sells much cheaper on ebay. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/304662400967

    • +4

Grey import, no warranty, you'd have to muck around checking band support, and it's literally the same price…

"Covered with 2 years Apple warranty." lol

      • -2

It clearly says AU stock, Manufacturer Warranty: 2 Years, model mentioned A536E is also Australian and is $474 after PLUSOCT1 discount. Literally people just choose to lie to prove their point on internet.

        • +4

Au stock means nothing. I have no doubt the stock is physically in Australia, but I also have no doubt it's grey import stock. A536E is an international model number. All the grey importers say they offer warranty. But it's a nightmare, at best, getting them to honour it. Samsung Australia won't touch you.

It's still no cheaper when you can price match the telstra deal at OW or similar and get an actual warranty.

  • I have the A52 and the biggest problem is that it doesn't do wireless charging unless you buy a separate item that's permanently attached to the micro USB slot. Does this handle wireless charging?

  • Silly question………..are Telstra Phones locked to Telstra?

  • -1

Perhaps I should ask if I buy a Telstra phone outright is it locked?

    • It's been asked multiple times, No

  • Thanks OP bought one!

  • Do these outright phones bought through Telstra have Telstra branding/software/bloatware?
