Apple iPad Price Bump - What Are Your Thoughts?

Hello Folks,

I was just casually reading into the Apple Oct event keynotes where they launched the latest iPad 10th generation and iPad Pros.
Coming to the Pricing, I noticed that Apple hiked the prices of the new iPad about 30%.iPad 9th-Gen ($549) vs iPad 10th-Gen($749).

Considering the new generation and redesign, let's assume that can be justified to the consumers (It is still way too much).

However, further look into the lineup, Apple has even jacked the prices of the old iPad Air launched last year from $929 to $999. This goes the same for the Pro line-up.

These price increase for the old hardware seem ridiculous and way more significant. Is this where Apple is headed into the future by screwing over the customers? Would these trends be also seen into the other line up for iPhones /Macs?

What are your thoughts?

    Inflation.

    When will my salary bump?

You make it sound like Apple is the only company doing it.
Sony's PS5 and Facebook/Meta's VR thingy got the same treatment to name a few.

As you shared previously (other posts), that you are an international student, you must be aware of the exchange rate issues. The AUD to USD has dropped by 10c from 73 to 63 in the past month or so.

So the screwing you claim, is the misinformed belief that companies that make a product what you desire are always out to get you, just because they didn’t just give it to you.

You give your real attitude away when you say

Considering the new generation and redesign, let's assume that can be justified to the consumers(It is still way too much).

Assume it’s justified, then say it’s not. Then ask for our opinion 😂😀

ITT: OP doesn't realise that the cost of manufacturing has gone up.

    • Not sure who negged you but you’re right

      • Probably someone who goes around negging every comment I make

Not just the cost of manufacturing but the cost of materials as well.

      • Foxconn employees must have gotten a 4c per hour payrise recently.

        • They wish! It all goes into Tim Apple's coffers.

Apple will do what Apple will do. If the change means they lose money they might reconsider their prices. Gone are the days when most people turned over their technology every year. I’ve got an iPhone XS, an Apple Watch 5 and an iPad Pro generation 1. I buy when the iOS upgrades run out.

The trouble is this becomes a chicken and egg. People won’t upgrade because it is too expensive but Apple needs to charge to make a profit. Also, the exchange rate, the issues with getting units built, their positioning in the market. I use my iPAD all the time so I will, probably, swallow hard when the time comes. The choices are you buy previous generation, refurb, or not at all.

Apple pricing is excessive, designed for those unwilling to try/compromise on something different. Watch out for a good Android tablet deal, like Lenovo 11" tablet for under $300. I'd rate an iPad Air or Pro as a generally better product, but not 4x better. That said, some Android apps are much better than their Apple versions.

    • Where is Myki for IOS it's almost 2023 now. It's a big fail for iPhones as the PTV focus on developing Android app first.

Past, present and future. Not really screwing over customers but applying premium pricing to their products. If it has to be Apple you pay, otherwise look elsewhere.

  • They are going to be making great profit off all the people forced to buy an iPad for school. $750 😂

Apple and all other major electronics brands adjust prices from time-to-time of existing products in certain regions due to fluctuations in currency values against the USD.

    Standard behaviour

Specifically over the last decade I have seen Apple both increase and decrease their prices due to currency movement

Prepare to pay extra for all the anti repair effort that went into them!

    iPads are great tablets.
I buy a new one every few years and sell the old.
This pricing is crazy, so I'll just hold on another year or two, and switch to android if they persist.

Web browsing, email etc doesn't require iOS.
Since I switched from IPhone to android I'm probably $3000 ahead with almost zero downside.

    It's not hard.

  • I won’t be buying iPad’s anymore if their not competitively priced. Not like they are that much better than android tablets.

    • Not like they are that much better than android tablets.

But they are. I have an Android phone, but an iPad mini 6.

I have android and apple. Several devices of each. Really do I find anything I can’t do on either operating system or platform.

Apple is certainly no easier to use than android or vice versa in MHO.

For me, it's about support with software updates. No way would an Android tablet receive six years of updates unlike iPads. Or last as long

          • @kerfuffle: My Samsung Galaxy Tablet still works after 6 1/2 years. The battery is still okay, but it.s been a while since an update. ;)

  • Ya that’s true. But after 6 years most devices start running so slow that it’s almost time to upgrade anyway

My iPad 6th gen is only 4 years old and getting annoying at times to use now. As always YMMV

  • If you are shocked at iPad prices going up. Wait until the price of all other essential items go up (usually products you have no choice in "not purchasing").

It has already started to happen to Toilet paper on Amazon. I had been getting the 45 rolls on subscribe and save for $18 per order (used to be $15 when I started ordering it from Amazon). Now it's currently gone up to $22+. 48 rolls is no cheaper either at $23+.

I haven't checked supermarket prices yet but I am hoping they won't jack the price of their 20 pack just to steal sales away from Amazon.

Great to see usbc finally, however its ludicrous it only supports the lightning based store pencil?

The new Logitech Crayon has a usb-c port now. And from what I remember in ads or something the Logitech Crayon is advertised as the "Education store" alternative for the Apple pencil.
I think apple thinks school/uni kids should be buying and losing the Logitech Crayon because it's cheaper to replace.

It is very disappointing. I like Apple and the it’s ecosystem but the increasing of their prices are absolutely ridiculous.

    • Nothing's changed in the 32 years I've been selling their products.

  • I was expecting this. Before this change, in early October, an 11inch iPad pro was about 100$ cheaper in Australia than from the US, based on currency conversion rate.

  • 9th Gen = Old Tech Lightning Port - $499
    10th Gen = USB-C - $749
Price of USB-C Port is $3.95 at Jaycar????
