  • Does this include Bali?

    • Not sure why neg. I had Singapore return free before

      • Yea can't see anything for Bali yet but may change come midnight

        • Why midnight

        • Nothing for Bali.

In previous Jetstar October Return Free Sales, Bali was included.

May as well pre-book some accommodation near the airport now. You'll need it.

What percentage of their flights are cancelled compared to say Virgin flights?

      • +15

        https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month

Jetstar recorded the highest percentage of cancellations (at 9.5 per cent) during the month, followed by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (at 4.6 per cent), Qantas (at 2.5 per cent), QantasLink (at 2.4 per cent), Rex Airlines (at 2.3 per cent) and Virgin Australia (at 1.9 per cent).

        • +13

Thanks, so there is a 90.5% chance your flight won't get cancelled.

          Fingers crossed.

@jaimex2: I got bumped about 3 months before travelling. They transferred me to a more expensive available seat on an earlier flight same day without charging extra for it.

depends on which part of Vietnam? June is a wet season in the southern, April and May are very warm. The best, I think, is from Sep to Feb

      • I'm probably only interested in South..

        • I went in June. Rain was in short sharp bursts so not a problem really. It is very hot though, so you'd need to be okay with that. I had a great time!

  • +3

I am going to present a contrarian view to those in this thread. I like Jetstar and the value they provide, and I respect their business model.

Do they have a small fleet in order to offer these super cheap prices? Yes. Does that results in delays and some cancellations? Yes, but I hope that impacted travellers are offered or can find a reasonable alternate to resume their impacted leg(s).

The prices they have offered in many of these sales over the years have been excellent. Of course, I did learn to play the game and I travel with no checked in luggage and no extras etc. (where Jetstar makes more margin on these services).

If their fleet continues to experience technical problems, I would expect that the problems could be rectified more quickly in the future (with improvements to staffing and supply chain logistics) or they would acquire more planes.

    • +4

Agree, but i think it will take quite some time. They have over-reached and grossly mismanaged to end up in their current mess especially for international routes. Big problems there.

      • +1

True but what alternatives are there? So far prices everywhere for flights seem very high.

        • Yeah, really depends on where you want to travel. But definitely look at foreign airline deals if can be patient, or use points redemptions. But you're spot on, its very limited options wise still. I only realized last week just how woefully limited international options still are when trying to book a flight from Thailand back to Sydney for next year…. literally only Jetstar direct a few times a week, or code shares via Singapore/Malaysia. Still haven't booked it. I would normally of just booked Jetstar but their international routes needs a drastic improvement.

    • +10

As a contrarian view to your contrarian view, Jetstar is owned by Qantas and is reported to have a lower operating cost than Virgin airlines (which means there is plenty of profit margin available to hire more staff).

Rather than lower prices on Qantas flights, Qantas operates a bare bones service specifically to frustrate Virgin's attempt at competition. If Virgin disappears from a route Jetstar will also be removed.

      Their "Technical problems" are intentional

    • +1

A small fleet? It's the same size as Virgin's. I don't think you know what you're talking about.

      • And sir, how many service international destinations?

That link says 11 787 and that sounds about right.

They have 11 planes but at a particular point in time, many of them had technical problems.

        • What's the point you're drawing? The majority of their routes are domestic and many international routes are only flown on the A320 to New Zealand and Bali. It's not like they're flying twice daily from each capital to Honolulu, Japan or Thailand is it? The BITRE statistics aren't just international flights…

It's a terrible showing on Jetstar's part to have that many 787s out of service and have them in that state for so long. VOZ's track record when they flew their 77Ws to the West Coast of the US was good for comparison. If you're saying they have a lack of aircraft for the flights they're committing to, that sounds like a problem for Jetstar.

          • +1

@Techie4066: For the purposes of my entire commentary, I will clarify that I am specifically referring to their cheap international routes. That is primary reason why I fly and find value in Jetstar.

            • @watwatwat: Even then it's about a 50:50 split across all international frequencies between the A320 and B788. Jetstar was underprepared, just as its parent company was in their poor showing of shifting blame onto their customers.

              • @Techie4066: So what? I don't really care and it doesn't impact this deal too much.

If you prefer a more premium airline, go for it. Otherwise, feel free to specify what other deal is available that is remotely as good value as this one?

              • +1

@Techie4066: They are underprepared though, that is the business model. Pay rock bottom prices ($330 return to Vietnam with which other airline?) and in return you get a lower level of service. They buy less aircraft (less on standby costing money) hire less staff (lower payroll expenses) and have very limited creature comforts. They're not perfect but having worked there previously I honestly believe most people at Jetstar really are trying to provide the best possible service (within their budget). Fair enough if you don't want to book with them right now. The turbulence and unpredictability post COVID is going to manifest the worst in a bare bones system like they operate.

You're somewhat right in that Qantas might push them a bit hard in terms of profit margin but if they didn't make money we wouldn't have a bargain basement option. You can always book with an alternative.

                • @nigel deborah:

They are underprepared though, that is the business model.

There's a big difference between cancelling 1 in 10 and delaying over 4 in 10 flights, and smoothly running a non-full service, cut price carrier. That is hurting their bottom line I can assure you that much.

  • +7

just avoid Jestar and Qantas if you want to enjoy your holiday

  • +11

    https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month

Jetstar recorded the highest percentage of cancellations (at 9.5 per cent) during the month, followed by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (at 4.6 per cent), Qantas (at 2.5 per cent), QantasLink (at 2.4 per cent), Rex Airlines (at 2.3 per cent) and Virgin Australia (at 1.9 per cent).

Basically you have a 1 in 10 chance of being left stranded at your own expense plus whatever the chances are of getting bumped for a higher paying customer.

Not a deal, I'd report it as a scam if I could.

    • You assume that there will be no improvement over the next 8 months.

Also, are the cancellations referring to cancellations in general or last minute ones? I had a jetstar flight cancelled months before and was able to easily rebook it to another day at no charge.

      • +6

I had a flight cancelled last minute, no other flights for over 24 hours, and there was no support or compensation.
        (profanity) Jetstar.

        • It’s called travel insurance

          • @UberIsCool: You shouldn't need travel insurance for a Melbourne to Adelaide flight, and even if you do, the airline should offer more support than "I know it's 10am on Friday but you can'y fly until 6pm Saturday".

        • My flight Cairns-Brisbane was cancelled at the last minute due to a technical problem, and they had moved my family to the day after a flight with Qantas without extra charge. They also paid us a dinner (up to $120), accommodation for that night (up to $150), and taxi fares from and to airport. We paid in advance, got the receipts, sent them to their email address and the money was deposited in our account within 2 days. It happened in June 2020, during the pandemic.
In short, I was very impressed with Jetstar then, but after being exposed to Qantas, my kids want to fly domestically with Qantas only

          • @lsbris: "Technical problem" = they didn't sell enough seats to fill the plane OR they sold your seat to someone else at a higher price.

They've been pulling this BS for years, it's part of their operating model.

          • @lsbris: I'm pleased you had this service. Unfortunately since the pandemic cleared up they've gone completely the other way. I was left stuck, out $300+ and told too bad.

      • +2

My missus had her flight cancelled the night before she was due to fly back from Bangkok to Melbourne and there was nothing available in the next 7 days. She then had to pay $1.7k on a Malaysia Airlines ticket and 3 extra nights of hotel.

Oh and speaking of travel insurance. The first thing she did was to contact Allianz because she bought her so called Comprehensive Travel Insurance with them. It was so comprehensive that nothing would be covered because the flight was cancelled due to technical faults and was not caused by a strike, riot, hijack, civil protest, weather, natural disaster or accident affecting the mode of transport.

So we will probably stay away from Jetstar and Qantas from now on.

can’t see return flights $0 for club jetstwr members

I have flown Jetstar many times pre-covid with rarely any issues including throughout asia and the like. But in all sincerity, you'd have to be crazy optimistic to book Jetstar for anything international within the next year. The horror stories not just in the news but social media travel groups and forums is on a scale i've not seen in a very, very long time. They are suffering from a serious failure on planning both personnel and aircraft availability and maintenance which is not something they can quickly recover from without spending big… and they aren't.

    Jetstar new Tiger Airways

I loved Tiger, it was great for price matching Jetstar online and saving 40%

  • Isn't this for Club Jetstar only, my email said so

    • as per description, if you are in Jetstar Club, you can see them, and public access to the $0 flights is from midnight tonight.

  • Thanks for the heads up. 3 holidays booked for next winter.

good price, but really risking it with jetstar

All Jetstar flights delayed by 2 to 3 hours last Sunday at Hobart (I was there). Seems like normal thing for them, they don’t even seem fussed about hundreds of people inconvenienced and left waiting for hours in the gate. I would never travel again on an airline where providing good customer experience is not in their business model.

If you think about it, airfare is just a small portion of your holiday expenses, better to pay a bit more to get a higher chance of a relaxing holiday

  • Auckland return to Sydney for free is that 6.15 am flight, which these days is a 2am wake up.
I had flights in Jan coming back via Gold Coast changed to the 6.15 am direct so I cancelled the trip

To everyone complaining about Jetstar cancelling flights, you are welcome to pay 6 times as much to fly Qantas and increase your odds of flying from 90.5% to 97.5%. You can go upvote the next Qantas deal at 6 times the price.

I just booked Melbourne to Cairns roundtrip for $120 during a public holiday long weekend in peak season. Qantas is charging minimum $723 for the same dates.

    • Go with Virgin or Rex, much better alternatives with much better service for slightly more if not the same price.

      • Virgin is charging $648 for my dates. No thanks. That's $528 more than I paid. Rex doesn't fly that route.

Well goodluck, you're gonna need it.

Seems like you haven't even looked at the prices if you are making those claims..

I have never found a Virgin Australia flight that is anywhere near comparable to Jetstar's prices. VA is always a lot more expensive.
