Best Excel Books for Self Study

Hey everyone,

I'm to build my (and my team)'s MS Excel capability with the ultimate aim of intermediate or higher proficiency in functions and formulas. I'd prefer a book with tutorial based learning with some practical exercises.

Looking at this book:

Not specific enough? Too general? What does the hive mind use?

    Better to have interactive demos/examples.

Leverage existing YouTube content or free Udemy courses

    • My excel capability was just ‘proficient’ until I was tasked with building a complex pricing tool.
The real requirement was a really good motivator, and the ability to add features and capability over time was a great way to continually improve things.

I don’t like excel much, but I am pretty good at it now. Google has a billion results on how to do anything you can imagine - including functional type stuff like “how to produce a rolling monthly report in excel” or similar queries where you don’t know what you need to learn about.

What does your team (and you) use excel for? Engineering, accounting, stock control etc. Project-based learning would be the way I would look at building skill - excel is extremely powerful and I think you'll find that unless you specify what you want to get out of it you won't get what you want out of training.

Start with a goal, get some dummy data, and google/youtube your way into manipulating that data into something meaningful. You can google anything re. excel - I have done it more times than I want to admit. Then write your own training guides for your team.

Once comfortable, you can focus your learning time on the parts of excel that mean something to you.

    • Not sure I'd call it extremely powerful. It's good for data entry and basic data manipulation.

Personally, my favourite go to for tutorials and tips is Leila Gharani on Youtube. You can do a lunch time practice as a team using one of Leila's video a day.

  • Are you paying them to read the book or expecting them to read in their own time?
