network resellers redbull,tpg,Virgin

I have had 3 sales people tell me that Vodafone>Redbull , Optus>Virgin and that Virgin>tpg or live connected
is there any truth to this at all ? I'm mostly interested in data stability and speeds.
Also is anyone going to start to resell Telstra mobile data ?

  • Vodafone > Redbull (true)
    Optus > Virgin (true)
Virgin > Tpg (false) —- should be Optus > TPG

Woolworths Mobile & Boost is backed by Optus

  • It's hard to have blanket statements saying what's better than what. It all depends on the area you use the phone , the time of day, and phone you use.

For me personally, VIC (Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Parkville, Brunswick)
Woolworths Mobile is better than Red Bull and way better than 3.

I was in Cairns airport last week and Red Bull and had the best data rate ever. Best bet would be to get a cheap/free sim for all of them and try it out in the area you are going to be in most.

  • I think the heirarchy is something like
    Telstra>Optus>Optus MVNO's>Vodafone>Voda MVNO's
However, I think the performance difference between the Telco's and their MVNO's are only going to occur when the tower you're connected to is flooded with connections, in which case the Telco customers will get priority.

I'm with Virgin and get generally good speeds.

Re: Telstra, I've read a rumour that Telstra will start looking to licence the NextG network when their 4G network is nearing completion… They'll keep 4G to themselves though to justify the extra cost.

    • They were in talks with Dodo at one stage, but I don't think that got anywhere.

And yes coverage (signal strength) is one very important aspect,
If you're in a major city's CBD, then congestion also comes into it.
I was with Optus resellers until a year ago, but go sick of having 4-5 bars in Melbourne CBD
but getting lots of missed calls (either straight to voicemail or just one ring & then VM).

See, I've never had that issue here in Adelaide, but then, I've never worked in the CBD… Definitely depends on the congestion of the tower.
