Why was Air Wick Promotion unpublished?
Hi,
Just wondering why the deal was unpublished?
Comments
cinnamon85 on 26/06/2012 - 23:25 ¶wow, so did someone from airwick find out it was listed on here and requested for it to be removed to stop people who didnt receive the email from getting free candles?
what is a 'take down notice'?
hope we can still use the voucher!

bargainhunter on 04/07/2012 - 12:43 ¶That can't be the reason can it, American copyright legislation?

That's just what a takedown request means not specific to Australia. It's essentially just a request from a company to takedown something that the company thinks infringes on it's brand.
The request can be a phone call or an email etc. Given that websites can be held responsible for their content/comments in Australia, it's in every websites best interest to remove offending content unless you have a full time legal team ready to fight these. Google Zgeek.com and their ongoing legal battles.
bargainhunter on 05/07/2012 - 10:48 ¶Fair enough.

I was going to say.. where did this deal go!? I claimed it last night at my local woolies, the staff member typed the code in for me as I was trying to scan the barcode from my iPhone but it wouldn't read it, anyway she was shocked when it finalized the sale and printed a receipt haha

Oh, it was originally a Facebook competition. Win 1 of 5000 candles.

+7 votesI tried this late last night. My local Woolies had them on special for two candles for $10. I took one and it scanned at $7 at the self serve. I was shocked when it gave me $3 change. Made $12 that night as the family had one each as well.
Tried again this morning and they have fixed the price back to $10.
+1 votetanoshiiki on 27/06/2012 - 09:45 ¶The voucher originally came from an Airwick facebook promotion, where you had to design your ideal living room (very limited design choices, mind you…) and if you met a certain criteria, they sent a voucher to the first 5,000.
Unfortunately, Airwick made the mistake of making the barcode generic and rescannable and did not expect greedy ozbargainers to ozbargain them. At the same time, it shouldn't have been published as a public deal at OzBargain. I'm sure Airwick had a marketing budget to cover the 5,000 free candles, but not the how many extra candles ozbargainers have taken from them; especially from some comments I've seen about people taking more than one candle; some even the whole set!

cinnamon85 on 27/06/2012 - 16:41 ¶are they still offering the voucher does anyone know? does it still work at the checkout? i guess they have to as it is valid until 2nd July
+2 votesmintysaurus on 28/06/2012 - 10:41 ¶Got one last night, last on the shelf. The man serving me did ask if I got it 'from that website'. Replied no

+3 votescinnamon85 on 28/06/2012 - 11:47 ¶hmm thats pretty bad on woolworths part, the people who won the competition might not be able to claim their candle now? woolworths should at least offer it until the voucher expires as it only has a few days left, for their next promotion i am guessing they will use different voucher numbers on each voucher lol…

It's been taken off the shelves at Glen Waverley/East Burwood.

I noticed on AirWicks Facebook page someone had alerted them to the coupon craziness. Not sure if they knew beforehand - probably.
As of 6pm last night the Cranbourne North (VIC) Safeway was still accepting the coupons. They were on sale - 2 for $10.00. I personally would never spend $10 on one - might consider $5.00.
+5 votescinnamon85 on 28/06/2012 - 13:58 ¶lol more like when promotions arent organised properly! They should have seen it coming using a generic voucher code to make something completely free…of course people were going to photocopy it!
+1 votejusthooked on 28/06/2012 - 14:09 ¶Same in WA its all over ,was told the promo has been cancelled due to the coupon
being on the net for all to use. They said the rep told them over 20,000 had been claimed as of last weeks promo 2 for $10 ! so what would it be up to as of last night ?
+2 votesjusthooked on 28/06/2012 - 14:16 ¶what of the people that just added it to there normal shop then went and used the self serve check out ,the coupon still scans and list it as a free candle promo but gives no reduction .
+5 votescinnamon85 on 28/06/2012 - 14:20 ¶exactly! it's unfair on the people who actually won the competition who now cant get their free candle. they should at least make the voucher say invalid or not scan or something so people are aware that it doesnt work. because as u said, alot of people will think they are getting it for free but if its mixed up in their shopping they will be charged for it. Airwick/woolworths should have just cut their losses at the end of the day and let the promotion be valid until 2nd july like the voucher says, its their own fault for doing a promotion like this! they will certainly know for next time!
-5 votesmintysaurus on 28/06/2012 - 14:30 ¶I think the amount of winners who will miss out, vs the amount of people who will get more free candles they were never meant to get means it'd be a bit ridiculous for them not to cancel it.
Big deal, move on
+2 votesYadaYadaYada on 28/06/2012 - 23:54 ¶Ai ai cinnamon85! I actually won one from the promo and I went to redeem it tonight at woolies for the first time and got told that they weren't accepting them because someone posted it on facebook :( I never thought this would happen and am pretty disappointed at the way this has turned out.
+2 votescinnamon85 on 29/06/2012 - 00:09 ¶u should complain! its their own fault its turned out like this, nothing on the voucher specifies its for 'competition winners only' so they should honour it according to the terms on the voucher, which means it should be valid until july 2nd. its definately unfair on competition winners like urself who havent yet claimed it.
+2 votesYadaYadaYada on 30/06/2012 - 00:31 ¶I sure have complained! Airwick are still working out what to do apparently, which could be good news. fingers crossed
+3 votesThis product probably got more consumer exposure in the last couple of days that imho its probably not a "disaster" for them after all
People would have gone in specifically for this item, have learnt to identify where it is on the shelf and the different types on offer.
stories would have been told and retold
and they would have learnt an extremely important lesson about the viral power of the net
they should have had a good chat to the maxibon (manchew) guys though before deciding on a strategy
perhaps the marketing guys can take a needed break at a certain casino? :P
+1 votetsunamisurfer on 28/06/2012 - 17:42 ¶This is the Allphones $200 Samsung Galaxy S II all over again.
+7 votesWell actually, there are a few companies out there that DO send freebies out now and again, for being on their mailing list, or 'liking' their facebook page etc.
You have the email, did it state anything about winning the competition, or congrats you are one of the lucky 5000? Because mine sure as hell didn't mention a thing…
+6 votesMarketing 101 lecture: Day one - lesson One.
Marketing is the art of preferably repeatedly selling the lowest possible value item or service to the largest number of willing buyers for the highest possible price.
Consumers are consistently bombarded by marketing schemes designed to achieve the above. And if buyers willingly purchase then all's fair in love and war.
Thus at it's heart, marketing can be inherently deceptive.
Sometimes marketing machines - with their top dogs on salaries of approx up to $300,000 per year - fail to understand simple processes like not using the same generic barcode for an offer like the Airwick promotion.
When this occurs and customers can legally claim the benefit on offer then it's not the consumer's fault.
Grab them while you can - I say. :-)
I'd love to see Airwick's numbers on how much this simple mistake has cost the company.
Just hope it's not the warehousing and low level staff who lose their jobs to recoup the unexpected losses this promotion will incur.
So marketers - if you can't think through the full implications of your offers - then you should not be drawing the salaries you are accustomed to.
Maybe an idea is to recruit some Ozbargainers - on a lucrative consultants fee - to run such promotions past - so they can spot the loopholes for you — and avoid these dramas BEFORE you go public with your promotion.
Happy to offer my advice for an appropriate remuneration! :-)
+3 votesscarletshoes on 28/06/2012 - 23:05 ¶We got one and we love it! I will buy it the next time we see it go on sale. I'm perfectly happy paying $5-$7 per candle. Without this promo, I would never have bought it and I would never have known I liked it. This makes my whole house smell delightfully deelish! :) It's great for when you're entertaining.
-2 votesGoldberg666 on 28/06/2012 - 23:26 ¶Between the wife and I we got 13 within a day or so. Thanks Woolies :-)
+1 voteGoldberg666 on 29/06/2012 - 00:29 ¶In saying that, we thought it was a promo open to the public…so as a true Ozbargainer…we blitzed it.
Almost as good as the DSE firesale IMO

Maybe, but OzBargainer's policy: Do whatever needs to be done to share those bargains with the community and ensure everyone gets a share. You are a scummy little Broden, you don't belong here.
+1 voteI think both Air Wick and Woolworth are winner for this incident, they just did a cheap and super effective advertising. 20,000 candles(claimed) * $2 ( cost of each candle to them, maybe less)=$40,000, that is only a cost of getting a full page ad organised on a newspaper and be less appealing as ozbargain. Furthermore, think how many of ozbargainers spend extra money on other shoppings when visiting woollies for this candle. They have had a bargain! they should keep this going at least till the end of promotion and keep winning.

+14 votesbarbarella on 29/06/2012 - 15:21 ¶Too funny!
I went to my local Woolies today with my voucher and asked them if they were
honouring the deal. They said it wasn't supposed to be out there but they would
honour it anyway. So I take my 'free' candle (worth $9.99) to the checkout and
the chick said because there was a mistake they had to give me $9.99 PLUS the candle!!
"wait a minute" I said…"you shouldn't be paying ME…I am getting a freebie!"
but no…they insisted I take the cash too!!! OMG!!!! awesome!!!
you know I would love to see a variant of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travelling_gnome_prank but with candles
maybe I should take my candle somewhere exciting and photograph it
wonder what 100 of them look like - although that is an awful lot
its a dumb an idea as planking and look how that took off

silverrat23 on 01/07/2012 - 22:32 ¶My friend didi that in France with a water bottle. Ended up taking too many photos.

Gotta love this being posted up. I was one of the original winners and now I can't claim my candle. I know it's partially Air Wick's fault by not putting unique barcodes on the vouchers but I would've thought that people would've been smart enough to not post their competition winnings on bargain websites (yeah, it happened on more than one). You can't really claim to think it was a freebie either since you only got the voucher after you entered the competition.
I emailed Air Wick and complained but I don't know what they'll do, if anything.
