Need a New Queen Mattress - Is a Tempur Worth It?

40 winks is currently having a 50% sale of tempur, but even with the discount, we're looking at $3-$5K. Alternatively, I've scoured the forums, and other people were recommending Sleep Republic ($1.3K), or Ausbeds ($2.5K). I don't know anything about pocket springs, or memory foam - happy to take recommendations on which type I should get?

My requirements:
- I'm mostly a back sleeper, and I'm looking at medium-firm mattresses.
- I will be buying new bed slats (Ikea, can't seem to find them anywhere else).
- I run hot so prefer the mattress to not retain heat.
- I have an Ikea bedframe (Hemnes) that I would prefer to keep as I like the under bed storage.
- I spend a lot of time lying down in bed, and I'm willing to splurge on my mattress

Does anyone have any feedback on the mattress brands that I mentioned (or others)? I'm a pretty big hermit, so I haven't gone out to try the beds yet. I'm looking for someone to point me in the direction of a brand, so I only need to go into one shop to try the different mattreses haha. Please & thank you :)

  • I had a tempur then went back to spring. Each of their own. I found it bit hot compare to spring.

  • We’ve had a few sleeping ducks, I recommend. A few have said they can’t stand them but the majority find them (being the mattress in a box style) the best bang for buck. I can’t fault ours and we ended up just buying a new one for the spare room

  • Tried most of them and now have an Emma - very happy
Buy one and try it out. If not happy simply return for full refund

  • Check out https://www.comfortsleep.com.au/ - they use them at Crown in their suites (not sure if they stash cash under the mattresses there, tho)

  • We have a Tempur, used it for years and finally gave up on it, moved it to a guest room and bought a Sleeping Duck. Had hopes that the Tempur would be good after years having an inner spring. The Tempur is too hot and horrible in Summer. Like lying on a frying pan. In winter they are stone cold when you first get into bed but do warm up. They can also feel very hard as they mould around your body. To turn over I found i had to first lift myself out of the “ditch” your body creates when it forms around you, I couldn’t roll out of it.
The Sleeping Duck is better. It has a memory foam top on a sprung mattress. It still can be a bit warm but not as bad as the Tempur. A benefit of the Sleeping Duck is that the foam topper could be changed if you find you want to switch to a different hardness. From memory they would send you a free replacement topper if you wanted a change in the first 90 days. You could also have a 50/50 mattress, the foam toppers come in 2 bits, if you share the bed with someone who wants a different hardness.
Be warned if your a hot sleeper anything with a memory foam top will be hotter.

40 winks is currently having a 50% sale

40 winks is always having a 50% sale

    FTFY

  • Wouldn't worry about a sale a mattrss store is having, they are always on sale.

I tried a sleep republic mattress after all the reviews. Had strong body impressions after only a few days. Free return though so you have nothing to lose, give it a go.

Im probably going to to go with a locally made mattress (WA). Recommend you try doing the same. What is best for me is a firm mattress. This company do pure high-density foam mattress. Feels amazing and not too expensive in the scheme of things.

Good luck. Its hard geting unbiased opinions on mattresses, I've been searching for about a year.

    • Which one do you recommend in WA?

      • Im probably going to go with http://perthmattressinnovations.com.au. They sell through bedroom gallery https://www.bedroom-gallery.com.au. These mattress claim no sag and no body impressions. I've got to look into their warently and stuff.

  • Pure Latex - rubber matress is quite good, we love ours but like Tempur, they can have a touch of enveloping heat and a bit "Chilled" in Winter. A whole of form latex matress is cheaper than Tempur, but much the same. Again ours is VERY heavy, I suspect the lighter ones are not 100% true latex. Still very much like them!

  • I run hot so prefer the mattress to not retain heat.

I find my Tempur gets quite hot. I'd say that I'm 'fattish' (probably more bulky), but not monster size, if that helps.

  • Thanks for your help everyone, I think it's pretty clear that Tempur probably won't be for me, so I'll probably give ausbeds a crack. My previous mattress was a mattress in a box (from Aldi), and I didn't like that there wasn't side support on the mattresses.

What exactly is supposed to justify the astonishing price for Tempurs? Don't tell me - let me guess - they're a prestige brand?

For what it's worth, CHOICE doesn't think much of them. At least they have an objective testing method. Otherwise all you've got is user reviews. You will be able to find hundreds of them, giving the usual user review experience - I hate it! I love it!

    • Yes I'd recommend a Choice subscription (even for just 3 months) to get unbiased reviews on many brands.
It's a small investment compared to the potential price you will pay for a mattress.

      Objective ha ha ba

Choice only reviews mattresses that are supplied by the manufacturer and then if they rate highly they expect the manufacturer to pay a fee for that review to be made public.

Choice is a rort and there is a reason why a lot of mattresses don’t get reviewed, it’s because the manufacturers hate being held to ransom. It’s why newer brands always rate so well… they have barely an my competition and they are happy to pay the fee to use the “choice rated” sticker on their marketing etc.

"a lot of mattresses don’t get reviewed"

        Such as?

  • You're in SYD so IMHO go to Aus Beds for sure.

Their owner seems very honest and is a regular poster on mattress related threads on OzB.

He doesn't push his own stuff and from reviewing their site they seem to be very customer focused but provide real info and not sales & marketing BS.

As a hermit myself - I'd head to the showroom and make a few hours to chat and find out the best mattress for your sleeping style, size and height etc.

I think they're by far the best value mattresses on the market.
