i just hope google doesnt release a new model every year

    • I hope they do :D

      • Me too. Each successive iteration has gotten better and better!

    • … Why on earth not?

      • -2

because the new one will make you feel like shit for only having it for a year
i dont want to buy a new tablet every year just to keep up with their technology

        • +6

Ok spread the word to all R&D teams around the world, human progress must come to a halt so bbyboy has the latest technology indefinitely.

        • +1

"because the new one will make you feel like shit for only having it for a year"

Maybe you should harden up and stop being upset that someone owns a gadget that might be better than yours. That's the nature of innovation, they become cheaper and faster. Your gadget will still work and be supported, it's not actually getting any worse.

The fact that someone has something better shouldn't affect you, so it seems awfully spiteful to wish that nothing better comes out in a year just so you own the latest and greatest.

        • | Your gadget will still work and be supported, it's not actually getting any worse.

Mmmm when it comes to devices like this, it is actually possible for the tablet to get worse, at least in terms of speed (new software that comes out might need a faster processor to be smooth), battery life (li-ion batts degrade quickly), or display quality (backlights lose brightness over time).

I agree with what you actually meant though - your gadget doesn't suddenly become worse the moment a new one is announced. :)

Most of the overprivilaged younger generation(under 20yrs) has this mindset. They always want the latest and greatest tech and bitch and moan when a newer product comes out that supersedes their model. This is the tech innovation cycle and it is exciting to see it move so quickly with more powerful hardware and cheaper prices. You can hardly complain about it. I usually stay near the middle of the cycle so I don't pay too much for things. Well there is always the tail-end if you are a super tightass or just don't care about new tech and gadgets and just need it "to work!".

        • i didnt say indefinitely, how would you feel if google releases a new tablet every 2 months? would you still want to buy this one?
and i didnt just say technology, i said THEIR technology, meaning google

        • If new technology was available in 2 months and it was financially viable to change production so early into the product's life cycle why not? Of-course it never would be but.

So just Google? So you expect Google to lag behind it's competitors by 12 months just so you can have the "best" Nexus tablet for an extra year?

As an Apple fan this sounds like a great idea, you should apply for a job at Google Monday!

        • There is nothing proprietary or exclusive about "Google's technology" as you say. This is the industry's technology of Silicon Valley and all manufacturers have access to incorporate them into their products. I applaud Google for taking some risks and making an excellent premium product at a fantastic $200 price point.

    My 2 bob’s worth… I love OZbargain, but….
If Google had sold Nexus7 for fifty bucks here in OZ and forty in the US, I’m sure some would still be complaining. Get a grip guys this is quad core latest hi-tech and I doubt that Google will make any money from selling the units. I personally think they expect to make money from play store in the future.

A small lesson in simple economics to just bring things into perspective a mass merchant like Wal-Mart in the US will often buy more units than our entire Australian market. I hate paying more than US prices but I choose to live in OZ and understand that it costs more to live here.

What Google should have done is sold it in OZ for $400 then offered it to us here at OZbargain for $249 then we would have said I’ll take 10 at that price. Nexus7=Bargain! I bought the 16GB as I can’t resist a bargain at $299 I think it’s cheap for new tech.

    • +2

Well done with your purchase and your attitude about it.You're right - Google is aiming for mass market-penetration and to undercut their major nemesis in the tablet market(Apple) by producing and selling these at a price that is not making them much profit. Good on them I say and I will gladly purchase the next model that has a TF card slot!

    • Damn so tempted to get one but just got an iPad a month ago.

  • very tempted to buy this for my mum. Can anyone tell me if this would be a good device reading PDFs?
The reason Im not buying an ipad for my mum is that it's not user-friendly to store PDFs on your ipad.
    Can Nexus 7 do:
    1. Plug your Nexus to PC
    2. Drag PDF files to Nexus
    3. Read PDFs on Nexus
    as simple as that?

    • I reckon 7" screen is a bit too small for PDF (not eBooks), especially text books where layout is fixed and you cannot resize the text, unless you don't mind zooming. The screen size is the only thing stopping me from ordering it at the moment.

      • ohhh what to do? now i have a dilemma.

        • Asus Transformer Pad is an alternative. 10" screen and more memory, but a bit more expensive.
          http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/tablets/asu…

        • I was just thinking that by choosing a 10" tablet, it may come back to the old question, can u hold it for a long time without feeling sore on your wrist?

        • I think that answer would be different for everyone, but if you get a 10 inch tablet you would have to use 2 hands to hold it.

        • i think for my mum 10" would be a no no. Hmm.. I wish I could just have a Nexus now (or in a local shop) just for my mum to try.

        • I can see how using 2 hands could limit the number of 'special' activities you can do with your tablet ;)

        • +1

Dilemma? LOL. Such a first-world problem.

        • You could perhaps try looking for a Samsung 7" tablet to have a look at. The resolution and size should be about the same.

    • Yep, it's that simple.

      • thanks :D

FYI. Apple has just won an injunction preventing sale of the Galaxy Nexus phone in the US. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they go trolling their superficial patents to go thermo on the Nexus 7 as well. I will be most displeased if they bring about a delay in mine arriving.

      • So you are of the opinion that all patents issued by the USPTO are fair, valid, and non-obvious?

      • +1

The patent system is broken. And Apple is taking advantage of that by patenting just about everything from hardware aesthetics to user interface designs. And even smartphone cases (not legal cases, but as in bumper or leather phone cases)

Sure, Apple might have a right to protect its product design but they've turned into a patent troll; they're deliberately trying to impede competition and product innovation.

        • +1
        • +4

"If these designs/features are so general, why did they not exists in any competition prior to the iPhone"

THEY DID EXIST. If you did 5 minutes of research outside of MacDailyNews, you'd know.

          For example:

          http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=24046

Apple are making trivial patent claims / patenting minor alterations on common ideas and trying to litigate the hell out of everyone. In short, they are trolling.

Beyond the gloss, the original iPhone owed a lot to phones such as the Palm Treo I was using at the time. The only difference was a bit of gloss and polish, and a lot of marketing hype.

Show me a phone that had slide to unlock before the iPhone….

          http://www.gsmarena.com/neonode_n1m-1137.php

Released 2005. Runs Windows CE. A rather familiar gesture isn't it.

        • Well well… a UK judge has invalidated Apple's slide-to-unlock patent.

          http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-07-04/htc-mobile-phones-d…

I wonder how it'll go in other countries.

        • @Paintoad.

Slide to unlock is an idea, and has been declared "obvious". So I gather it's losing patent protection that it should never have had.

The USPTO is grossly underfunded, and has been pressured to permit patents for products such as software, business concepts, and stuff that clearly does not fit the requirements. They have no political power, and so just rubber-stamp things. Then the courts have to sort out the mess, with judges who have no idea about technology.

Patents are supposed to encourage innovation. That is their express purpose. Are you arguing that they are doing that in the mobile technology field? Because at the moment no company without a "protective" patent portfolio of at least several hundred patents can even enter the industry. Amazon is buying up patents so it can put out its own phone.

Of course, you also ignore the fact that a lot of Apple's patents are subject to "prior art" claims - Apple didn't invent them, it copied them.

      • +2

Yea how dare Apple try and protect their intellectual property that they spent millions on in R&D.

It's just a pity that Xerox didn't take such an aggressive stance back in 1979 when Jobs stole their intellectual property! :s

      • The patent system for IT is broken. Patents are being issued for anything and anything. The US Patent Office should have stopped back when they had a chance in 1899, after declaring that everything had been invented.

Now we have software patents, idea patents, incredibly vague and ambiguous patents, and courts are failing in figuring it all out because it's all too technical.

Apple is just following Steve Jobs' instructions in his will, to "Destroy Android".

    • +3

Apple thrives off these artificial patents and it has sustained their business practices for many years. Patents kill innovation and encourage monopolisation ala Apple.

      • I would say apple have all the rights to the pattern. But it shouldn't hold valid for such a long period, because its prevents product innovation. I am pretty sure they are producing much better products now mainly because of competition. And competition is healthier for consumer because we will get better products.

  • can anyone tell me if it can read EPUB/MOBI? Or do I install an app to do it?

  • I am not high tech person. Just wondering which one is value for money: Nook Tablet 16G or Nexus?

    • +1

Go for nexus, after having an android device, I would say its much better to go with nexus devices as they provide more consistent updates. Also this is a quad core, would have definitely got one if haven't get an iPad.

    "Sold Out"

    • "Now taking pre-orders! Estimated dispatch August 15"

      • would dispatch also be aug 15 if bought from google play?

        • No, they would start shipping the tablet between July 14-21.

        • -1

so start shipping the tablet between July 14-21, then you wait for another 2-3 weeks to have the tablet arrived at your door?

        • what makes you think it will take 2-3 weeks to ship. Its very likely they are shipping from Australia considering the price includes GST.

        • well i dunno, thats what the website says "Shipping 2-3 weeks"
I just want to know if I placed my order today, will I get it in mid July?

        • No, the website says "Ships in 2 - 3 weeks." That is when they start to dispatch them.

If you bothered to click the "learn more", it then goes on to say, "All packages will arrive via FedEx within 3 - 5 business days of your order."

Earliest you'd receive it is around July 17, latest is around July 26.

    • I'm confused - why buy from Kogan instead of google? Is there a difference in price? Or warranty?

  • cant u use the usb for external memory.

    • Out of the box, no. But it can be done with stickmount if you root.
