120hz display at this price point is a bonus

    • +1

      Yup. 120hz 1080p > 60hz 1440p at this size screen IMO.

      • +6

        Only for games.
For anything else, like study or work, res maters far more.

        • +1

I have a laptop with a 14" QHD 60hz and I wish it was 1080p 120hz just for the smoothness ive become accustomed to on my phone.

I use it primarily for study.

Up to 15" why do you perceive higher resolution as more beneficial? The scaling? IMO everything becomes very small unscaled at 2560x1440 on 15" or less. I'm curious

          • @Jayblesz: 1080P is fine for a 6" phone. I did have a phone with QHD, but the only time that helped was when using the phone in a VR headset, ie Google Cardboard.
At 15", QHD lets me get more text visible at once, so less scrolling back and forth.
Smooth scroll is not so important when using a keyboard rather than finger-scrolling.

            • @bargaino: Fair enough. At 15", I disagree but each to their own!

  • +1

Specs-wise this is a steal. How’s the build quality on these?

    • +1

      Dont ask.

    • +1

I've got a model from last year, and looks like the same case. I think it's quite good, it's plastic but it feels solid.

  • +12

Just saw a review that the display is 59.5% sRGB

    • +1

      good/bad? min ?

      • +1

Bad. Poor colour reproduction, the tone will shift massively from the actual intended colour.
You need 99% sRGB (90+ close enough) or 72% NTSC to do accurate daily browsing.

        • +1

cheers lots of consumer grade lappies are low like that innnit

          what are ur reccos?

        • +5

          "accurate daily browsing"

I mean a red is still going to look red. Wrong shade, but for the vast majority who cares? If you're not doing anything where colour accuracy is important, the smoother screen and better specs are probably better value.

          • +2

@incipient: Well, it's true this laptop is cheap enough to consider, especially for those who do not care about colour that much.
But in OZB, at least people do online shopping that does need colour accuracy to some extent. Buying shoes/clothes or even non-monochrome electronics, better to get the first impression as close as to what you see on screen. Almost all online store photos are designed for a full sRGB scale.

          • @incipient: Maybe valid if it was only say 75 or 80, but 59.5% of sRGB is absolutely abysmal in 2022.

Most phones do 98-140% so if you use a decent or flagship phone every day, you'll definitely notice how inferior this laptop screen will be.

120Hz is great for the price point (assuming the panel is tuned well for grey to grey response times to make decent use of it - but it probably isn't given the price) but it's not a gaming laptop so I'd say much less important than colour reproduction. Hell, 120Hz chews through battery faster too.

The laptop specs are fantastic for the price other than the screen, but that's a point blank deal-breaker for me.

          • @incipient: It's just nitpicking, there is no laptop at this price range that provides the high end 'colour' reproduction.

  • Will the graphics run basic gaming? I mean Age of empires type stuff?

    • +1

      Yes

      • Thanks

        • It's actually quite a competent graphics card for a discrete, competes with the low end dedicated ones

  • +1

Thanks, bought one. Was looking for a laptop for home use.

  • No 4k/2k output over HDMI, and charging is not over USB-C.

    • +7

Any alternative at this price with that feature?

      • Fair point. Maybe a Lenovo laptop deal. They appear to have better specs than Dell for similar prices.

    • Are you 100% sure it doesn't allow for USB-C charging? I've found a few posts where Dell doesn't state USB-C charging in the manual, but they do indeed charge via the USB-C port.

  • +2

Step 1, take it out of S mode

    • +3

      Instructions unclear.

      Vtec kicked in yo.

    • +3

      Put it in H!

      • +1

How many thimbles of kerosene does it need

    • +1

      huh
      ??

      • +2

Windows 11 in S mode is a version of Windows 11 that's streamlined for security and performance, while providing a familiar Windows experience.

        • +2

And also doesn't let you install anything except things on the windows store.

    • +1

I would wipe the SSD and do a fresh install entirely. It will probably be on Win 11 21H2 instead of the newly released 22H2.

      • I thought everyone does that with every laptop anyone buys? Just bliw away any crapware preinstalled on the laptop.

  • +1

Bought 1, hopefully arrives by xmas, delivery date on ebay saying mid Dec.

Just need to find a good deal on a smaller 13" laptop

  • +1

    Non-backlit keyboard / HDMI 1.4 port (only supports 1080p no 4k) / only one usb-c port…good price though

    • Can the USB-C be used for charging?

    • Aaack-shually, HDMI 1.4 supports up to 4K (4096 x 2160) at 24Hz, 4K (3840 x 2160) at 30Hz, or 1080p at 120Hz.

      • +3

HDMI 1.4 is meant to support those resolutions, but that's not the case with many Dell machines.

1080p@60Hz is maximum these will output at.

Just dumping old tech, realistically every laptop should have a touch screen these days.

    • While i find touch screen useful personally. Some dont however. So theres that.

    • rare to find touchscr with MATTE/anti-glare finish

      i hate glossy screens

    • I agree. Same specs with a touch screen would be perfect for a student.

      • Acer spin just listed, touch screen, thank you all and thanks for all the down voting.

  • +1

    Thanks OP I bought one.

  • A Thinkpad E series at that price would be a steal!

  • Terrible screen kills this as an option. Can't suffer that for a day, let alone years. My eyesight has suffered enough (totally real)

    • +1

Because of the limited colour space? I'm genuinely super curious why so many people are hating on the screen. It's a good resolution, fast, panel. Ok it's dark with limited colours…but it's also a well spec'ed laptop for less than $800 lol.

      • The price is good, the screen really doesn't work for my poor eyesight anymore. Inspiron itself is a cheap build, and that is matched by the price

    • Not really any good screens at this price range on any brand.

  • Is it worth just paying an extra $200 for a Mircosoft Surface on sale?

    • Which Surface? Probably a very nice laptop except for only 8GB non-upgradable RAM?

      • I'm sure the 16GB was on sale recently, very close to 1k.

        Maybe I'm dreaming 🤣

  • +2

I would wait for a BF Lenovo ThinkPad E series at this point

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/733921

    • Is it better than the Surface?

I'm giving up on finding a latest gen AMD with upgradeable RAM.

I figured easier to get a decent work laptop, and then build a faster music PC desktop.

      • If upgradable ram is your only concern, hp probook with previous gen ryzen might be an option: $999
Current gen Ryzen, I have flagged Asus ROG X16 (comes at a premium, but ticks almost every box you throw at it).
Current gen intel, there is Dell 7620, various options, including OLED. $1600-$2200

        • Well I want a work station laptop, but could potentially double up for music production.

It's either that, or I buy a work station laptop $800-$1000 and just build a music PC for $1,000-$,1200

It's been difficult to find latest gen CPU, with the ability for 32GB ram.

    • How do you know that deals coming back?

  • +1

This laptop is a BUY at this price. Very hard to complain given the price. Would suit very well for education purpose.
