Black or Crap Friday Did You Have a Win?

BLACK or CRAP Friday did you have a win?
Well Thanks To Clear you saved me $13 USD on stuff I'd buy anyway Not just wait all year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739524 Any savings is a bonus much appreciated again for your work.

Thanks to ShopBack on the 28 degrees challenge already paid out $155 for gift vouches a couple of weeks ago. Ditto as above.

Wanted to use my gift vouches today to buy a laptop a hybrid freezer and maybe a phone.

Laptop ends up $100 more expensive than everyday price.

Freezer found cheaper from a local wholesaler and thinking I can buy this anytime for $150 less after black friday when I do really need it.
Snapped up the Delonghi deal 2 weeks ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/735506 if I waited till today I'd be down $200 or wouldn't have bought it

So far I've saved about $20 and kept over 3K in my pocket.

Thanks Jack without you I wouldn't have discovered things I thought I wanted ended up just being a waste of money and space and didn't need them anyway.

Friends are saying the same thing. How about you?

Nothing to write home about. Fairly underwhelming. Got excited about cheap pens for work, maybe I can use them to write about how crap the sales are 🤷‍♀️

    • Lucky you didn't buy a laptop or it would be a in the red Friday

      • This pen is bluuuuureeed!!

        • +2

          rrrrrrrrrre-oyal blue?

    • +6

I think "Black Friday" is becoming "Jack Friday"

  • +12

I was sad that I bought $10k of house goods months ago because my move date got shifted 6 months to December - but Jack's visit made me feel better because everything I bought was the same price or more expensive today, yay, thanks Jack!

    • anybody named jack would feel your appreciation.
On behalf of anybody named jack I will say you are most welcome.

  • +32

The words "special" "sale" "some percentage off" is meaningless to me these days.

    • -2

Yep! I mean, how poorly planned do you have to be to pay RRP for things?

    • In my experience it's always the stuff that is low stock or with clothes they only have like XXL available.

  • +3

Well Thanks To Clear you saved me $13 USD on stuff I'd buy anyway Not just wait all year https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739524 Any savings is a bonus much appreciated again for your work.

    😘😘😘

I made about 37 AliExpress orders on 11/11 and so far for Black Friday none…. yet.

  • +26

People at chaddy thinking they are getting deals 🤣🤣

    • +2

      Sorry whats chaddy?

      • +14

It must be a cross between a chap & a laddy

        • 🤣🤣🤣

        • did dictator dan let the chads and LADs out finally?
          Congrats!

      • Shopping centre:)

      • +8

Chadstone Shopping Centre, otherwise known as the Fashion Capital of VIC.

      • Thanks all

    • The money those stores are making just because it's black friday is insane

  • +8

    Still waiting on GPU deals,

Zip offer last week has been better so far

  • +20

    They're mostly fake sales.

Saw rebel on cashrewards pop up with 50% off garmin watches.

These watches are always that price anyway.

  • +3

Did ok, 10% off amazon gift cards and 15% of TCN helped though, as did the 150 cashback on amex for microsoft.

However bit disappointing that Total Tools or Sydney Tools didn't put on a bonus points/ dollars offer or Zip not doing the Sydney Tools 20% cashback

    • Our local Total Tools had the usual 20% store credit, $100 for $500 spend etc on Thursday, Trade Tools did same thing today.

      • BF sale was made more mainstream in Australia by international giants like Google Store, Apple, Amazon, eBay by offering some insane deals that aren't seen during the year. I think Total Tools don't want to get to this bandwagon. There's no Australian pride in not offering good deals to customer when everyone else is doing it.

        • BTW just got an email notification from Total Tools about their BF Sale, nothing interesting though.

  • +15

Black Friday in Australia is more like Grey Saturday.

One of the worst offenders I found?? Nicorette gum at CW was $33.99 yesterday. 10% sidewide price today is $46.79 with "BLACK FRIDAY SALE" written next to it.

I'd been watching the mini roo boots at Ugg Australia for a few weeks - on sale for $100, reduced from $280. On the 19th Nov in their Black Friday Is Coming email the price rose to $140 while the Tidal 3/4 roo boots went from $120 to $160. Hello Jack!

  • iphone 14 pro max for $1784 down from 2099 thanks to Coles gc.
Turn around time to receiving the phone: 1 day. (Pure luck)

    • -1

You can get that anytime, take another 10% off for me, abn holder.

      • Huh 10% off coz abn?
Makes sense if your reselling, but if it's for your general use (business or otherwise) then its not applicable. Can be tax deductible if a work/business exp ofc.
        Are you confused with TRS?

        • -1

Rubbish. If a business buys a mobile to use for business it claims the GST back. Nothing to do with deductibility (which relates to income tax).

  • +1

Missed shopback cashback as the trackers were off in my browser. Lost $25. Saved about a $100 in various computing stuff.

  • +7

Pretty low tier deals, blame weak AUD and the inflation boogeyman

  • +19

Worse part about Black Friday was the amount of SMS (text) spamming . I was getting spam messages from businesses I have never heard of on the other side of the country (I live in Vic and I was getting spam from a chemist in perth).

My phone is a work phone so if I get a text/sms message when driving I have to pull over to check my phone in case it is a client as it is unlawful to check text messages when driving were I live. Imagine how happy that makes me when sitting on the side of the road I find the message is yet more Spam .

I noticed just about all the messages were delved from one SMS/Text spam house in Melbourne so I suspect they must have been running a campaign to get small businesses to use their spam services.

For me personally I will boycott any business or organisations that use text/SMS spam.

I have even seen reputable marketing companies warning businesses that a good way to make customers hate you is to use sms/text spam when you have not explicitly allowed the customer opt in to it.

And being in Victoria on top of the Black Friday spam I was also getting political party spam as well.. Friday was not a good day for me …I was talking to another friend with a small business who uses SMS to regularly communicate with clients and they told me the amount of SMS/Text spam on Friday was driving them crazy as well so I am not the only one…

As for black Friday deals, over the past couple of years I have found there are very few decent deals.. deals seem to be mostly overstock junk. I compare that with a few years back .. I got a 1080ti card for just under $700 on a black friday sale when the going price at the time was around $1000..

    • +3

My Mazda cx3 reads my sms messages when I get 1 while I am listening to music while driving.

      • +3

Imagine spam read to you in the middle of listening to the song you love. :)

        • +1

the car screen shows the number from which the sms came and asks me whether I would like it to be read.

          • +4

@takloohaivan: Imagine being asked whether you want spam read to you in the middle of listening to the song you love ;)

        • I had a gf like that once..talks over the best parts of a song.

    • +2

Can''t say I noticed an uptick in spam, I'm feeling unwanted;)

A quick glance at my Garmin Fenix shows first few lines of an incoming text or email. Not illegal to look at your watch while driving (yet);)

    • I didn't get any SMS' at all, and less emails than I was expecting for that matter.

  • Picked up a tempo trainer from the 40% Adidas sales, but at 168 still feels like I got jacked…

  • +2

Meh… did most of my Christmas shopping weeks ago, before they jacked their prices for the Black Friday “sales”…

  • +2

High end OLED TV's were a steal, more so if you combined them with the recent gift cards and cash back offerings.

I posted a deal on Fanatec sim racing gear - They never go on sale, let alone at the discounts they're offering.

Needless to say I'm way poorer now than I was a week ago…

    • +1

if you could even get any gift cards

  • +8

    Can't find an OLED switch

  • Black Friday is from the USA and I find it interesting Australia is adopting this day just to lure people thinking it's an amazing day full of amazing sales.

I was shopping and found nothing good in terms of sales cause it looks like every other sale of the year.

    • +1

could be worse, could be another click frenzy day, while the sale was pretty average at least it hasn't plumbed those dismal depths yet.

  • It's not over yet, some of the good deals may still come on Cyber Monday !
But definitely not as good as several years ago…

    • +1

It's not over yet, some of the good deals may still come on Cyber Monday !

      your sarcasm is noted.. lol

  • Yeah the ‘sales’ this year all felt pretty crappy and fake to me. Pants I was watching the price of were $129. Shot up to $149 during the sale and had a 10% discount so they were $119. 🤷

I literally saw Sheridan sheets on sale for $124 a few days ago and now they’re $160 as well 🤷… same Black Friday week sale too. There goes any good will they had left.

  • +10

Really really shitty! These businesses still making big profits and not giving many sales. Switch deals are a joke. Last month you could get OLED for ~400$ now the neon console is 390$ wtf. And computer components, no Ryzen 5 deals, not many gpu deals, no decent corsair psu deals, monitor deals lacking, it just goes on. Almost pitiful. The only way to get slightly cheaper deals on parts is eBay plus with discount giftcard. Crazy! These sales gone downhill since last year. 2020 was probably best.

    • Can you tell me what was the best about 2020? New to caring about Black Crap Friday

      • Bought some noise cancelling headphones on lightning deal, some resistance bands, a tool or 2 and some miscellaneous stuff - just looking through Amazon order history. I find prime day better really. Even 2020 prime day was good. I didn't buy many pc parts though that year. I got pc parts 2019 end, unfortunately can't track that history, since not through Amazon but various pc retailers.

        • I presume all within very good sales?

          • +1

@LuslecGrace: Always. 3xcamel tracking used ongoing or for checking for items, unless of course good price already.

  • -1

Pretty decent one for me. Dji mini SE for $319. $440 Quest 2. Sel18115G lens for $507. All that without considering the cashbacks. And with the TCN gift cards, I managed to grab a PS5 disc for $630. Now need to find time to enjoy these. 😬

  • +1

Had my eye on a particular type of desert boots for a couple of months, ended up being $80 odd cheaper so thats a win for me.

Sales across the board were a little underwhelming and mostly not too dissimilar to discounts offered throughout the year. Similar to Boxing Day, but depends on what you're looking for tbf. Discounts on PS5s and certain TVs were great value. Myer had/has 40% off Champion clothing which was ok. Plus both Myer and Rebel did an additional 25% off clearance clothing which was solid.

  • +2

    Yeah nahh

  • I got some Hush Puppies shoes for half price on Amazon, Halo infinite for $29, $200 off a sit stand desk, about 40% off RRP (about 20% off street price) on some Logitech computer speakers. Not too bad.

  • +1

Shoes roughly 50% off at adidas, Pepsi max on amazon, $20 free ebay credit with $5 yearly membership.
Im sure 1-2 more purchases will come.

Also got offered $50 off $100 groceries on Uber eats, not sure if black friday, but I got a ton of items that were not super inflated and saved like $20-30

  • Yeap, most of what I had put aside to buy on black friday season + 10-15% off gcs helped out alot 🙌

  • +1

I believe everyone bought 50% off Pirellis tyres had a win

  • +1

Yeah, Black Friday deals seem a little underwhelming this year. Struggling to find stuff I want at decent discount

  • -1

I'm pretty happy, got the staff-discounted Breville DB (only a good deal, not amazing), and cheap airpod pros 2 off ebay.

  • I'm fairly happy, managed to snag the S21 FE 5G @ 475 in the minutes it was in stock, and was lucky enough to use the student beans code to buy 2 bose sport earbuds for $99 for the pair!

  • Not terrible this year. I think the standouts were:

    • Bose earphones
    • $55 Silicon power 1TB ssds

Ebay was a disappointment as usual. Items I was watching had their price go up so the sale felt a bit meaningless. They were still decent prices after the coupon and slightly below the usual, just not great. I also had a few Big W items cancelled.

  • +1

Not sure it counts as black friday, but the KSM160 standing mixer for $399 at costco was a very good deal. I've never seen it that low.

  • +1

I managed to get a set of Pirelli tyres from the mycar deal as well as a bottle of Glenmorangie, both for half price.

The Scotch was just a right place at the right time purchase after seeing the sea shortly after it was posted, the tyres however were hard work. Many tries through the website that was bombarded and then 2hrs of holding on the phone before securing my booking. Still, saved over $700.. so not bad for $350/hr!!

  • I feel that Single's day was actually better this year.
I got a TV I wanted this year, but it seemed like they did it by accident rather than due to a sale.

  • BF seems a good time to buy higher end things like a TV or a phone. Otherwise, meh.

  • +6

Did I have a win? Yep… I didnt fall for all the fake sales and specials..

  • Been considering getting a mesh network going and saw that the eero 6+ was 40% off, then the night before I bought it, saw the Aldi 10% off Amazon GC so I went and got those. Then used CR for some further cashback.

Ended up getting it a 3pack for $309.

  • +3

Seems just like every other sale, frenzy marketed as big discounts but in reality it's the same sales that are on every other week of the year.

  • Bought some Salomon Men's Speedcross 4 for $95 off Amazon which I though why not I payed 180 for them 3 months ago because I needed them then so half-price to have a spare set can't go wrong. Otherwise the sales just felt like a scam everything I looked at felt I was getting a worse deal than normally available.

  • quite shit didnt even see much on my list

  • no win, missed out on Splatoon 3.

  • +1

I got Kraken at $51 from ebay considering its always at 65. Not too much but some savings.

  • The deals earlier in the week were better than Black Friday itself.

I bought a car oil filter for 22% off and a bag of coffee for 30% off. Big deal…

I had thousands set aside for some tech, but nah. I'll keep waiting.

  • Been in the laptop market myself and have been massively underwhelmed too. Zero good deals really. Just walked into a HN in Sydney and found they had sold out of virtually everything, only display models remaining. Hoping for a last bite of the cherry tomorrow but really not holding my breath

  • there's always Cyber monday.
Already seeing several emails in my inbox about these "so called deals" for next week.

Think it has been said before … but "black friday" used to happen once a year … these days it happens 3x a year
Marketing ploy trying to entice those into the loop.

  • +2

    Bought… nothing. Huge save :)

  • +3

    Got a 20TB HDD for $99 and a high-end tripod for $50.

    Amazon backpedalled on both.

    • +1

      Were they both price errors?

      • +1

I'll never know. They cancelled the orders without explanation. Quite a few got theirs though so I guess they over sold what stock they had.

  • -1

bought a phone, Samsung s21 FE. broke my own promise never to touch a samsung again. But needed a phone and deal was too good with the BF sale + Westpac $25 cashback through good guys + $10 store credit.

Couple f other very minor clothing items like Step One undies.

  • +1

Bought two TV's I was eyeing off for months. $3k saving is good, otherwise fairly disappointing

    • +1

TV deals definitely seemed like the pick of the bunch. People probably upgraded during covid lockdowns and now they had some spare stock hanging around.

  • After a fair sht fight, got my tyres sorted…. otherwise mostly poor deals I thought.

  • I think it was crap and I bought an LG C2 and it's epic.
My actual office work may be compromised on this one though…

    • I bought one too but a 42" one to use as a monitor. I'm on back order so plenty of time to have buyer remorse before it arrives.

  • Only real deal was getting a Backbone One for $129.99 when they RRP for $179.99.
Other than that I got the usual Amazon deals that happen every few months.

  • +2

The few notable deals I had:
    Adidas Sale 40%+35% Cashback
Ebay Plus 2nd Gen Google Nest Hub $36
    Ebay Plus G Pro X Superlight $113

  • +1

Got a decent deal on a TV via Good Guys on eBay, a lot of the deals I saw posted were pretty underwhelming though

  • +1

Bought some AT tyres for the ute and saved a couple of hundred with current sales.
